Approaching shadow was all done in the dark room. It was a solid white wall exposure and the model was a relative of his. Not to take anything away from it, but the other 50% was his darkroom work.
Thanks so much for these photographer spotlights. I'd never heard of Fan Ho, and his work is gorgeous. You're definitely broadening my artist exposure.
Thanks for the background of this extraordinary photographer. I am reminded of the approach of Paul Strand, who travelled extensively. When choosing a new location, he preferred to spend time simply walking around, taking in the appearances, light, rhythm, daily life, sometimes for weeks before bringing out his camera. He once said, "Did I express my personality? I think that’s quite unimportant, because it’s not people’s selves but what they have to say about life that’s important.”
Fan Ho is one of my favorite photographers. The way he used shadow and light as well as composing photos with such feeling. Thank you for showing us this glimpse into his life.
Found this post a year after you made it, but really well made. Great stuff, Joshua. I'm glad you put this together.
East meet West is probably his most powerful photo. The one you picked is probably my personal favorite of his.

That takes skills
So ahead of his time. 👏👏👏👏
Ya missed my favorite Fab Ho. Girl at table amid tall buildings. Love this video. Good job.
