- University of California Santa Barbara, UCSB, housing can be hard to obtain. Santa Barbara's village of Isla Vista is adjacent to the University of California Santa Barbara campus. Students love to live here because the village is predominantly students and has bars, cafes and lots of parties. The South side of Del Playa faces the ocean with beautiful ocean views and direct access to the beach and surfing.
Housing on Del Playa drive sits atop bluffs 30 to 60 feet above the Pacific Ocean. The bluffs erode an average of 6 inches per year.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, up to 67% of Southern CA beaches could become completely eroded by 2100.
Rent in this area of Isle Vista on Del Playa drive for a 4 bedroom 3 bath would be around $12,250 per month rent with a security deposit of $24,000. Typically houses like this would allow 12 tenants so with 3 people per room the rent per person is $1021. per month
For the Holderness, as it's known, has the dubious distinction of being the fastest-eroding stretch of coast not just in Britain but in the whole of Europe and perhaps the world. Coastal erosion is a problem around the world and will likely get worse with sea level rise.

I grew up in Santa Barbara and I have lived in IV. Mother nature with all her power will take. What she wants. Nothing can stop her.
Lived in IV early eighties. “Our” house on del playa has lost the two level deck. Smiled to see old stomping ground
Sad to see all the coastal erosion. We had similar situation in some areas of Nova Scotia where houses with lovely cliffside views are in danger due to the erosion of the cliffs by the ocean. I enjoyed in full to the end. Thank you, my friend.

What shots Mike! So sorry for the people affected. The cliff erosions is so bad around the apartment building I used to live at in Pacifica, CA, that I made two videos about it. There was a lot more land facing the ocean in the 1980s then there is now and many apartment buildings and houses have been torn down. Thanks for showing what is happening in beautiful Santa Barbara. I've been there a few times too years ago.

I've never been to Santa Barbara before. The erosion looks devastating. And so scary how close the houses and properties are to the edge and some 30-60 feet above, oh my goodness, I get butterflies just thinking of it. II can see why there are so many college students as it would be so cool to live near the water, BUT the water can be a very scary place too :( Definitely some risks on the coastal areas.

This is a major problem here in Cornwall and many other parts of the UK coastline, too (see the notes attached to my video on moving Bude Storm Tower), but you've gone in to a lot more detail than I did. Fantastic views of the rock strata, illustrating the problems caused by different varieties and thicknesses of compacted sediment. Excellent share.👌👍👋

The cliff coast is very powerful!
The layers of sand on the cliffs have eroded over the years and it would be very difficult to live in such a place.

Mike it was so interesting that you have put this video together as we are having this problem here in North Wales with coastal erosion and houses at risk . You put together great footage here . Same problems with having to move fences back hete as well. That yellow house looked like it would collapse soon, its so close to the edge and those supports were really exposed on the houses you shown. So sad . Hi Mike, Coastal erosion is a problem for many countries and states, with rising sea levels and climate change. In New York, on the other hand, they have the problem of the ground going down and therefore the city tends to go under water.

I've visited Santa Barbara in the past but never had a chance to explore the coastal areas too much. It's pretty interesting seeing these houses close to the cliffside. I found it cool that some of those houses have staircases leading directly to the water.

We've been to Santa Barbara before, and we never thought this existed. thank you for sharing. the breathtaking view comes with the risk of coastal erosion. I'm glad that local officials regularly assess the situation and will condemn structures that appear in eminent danger.

It’s so pretty, and I can see why it’s appealing to college kids. But as a mom, I’d be freaking out. We’ve actually seen houses go over into the water at Whitney where erosion has gotten to be an issue. Scary.

This has been an increasing problem here since the 1980s. On the other side of campus, there used to be a small grass area and volleyball courts on the beach that were taken out by a storm (iirc 1986 ish). Further South East, the Mesa and parts of Montecito also have properties with clear damage from the receding cliffs.
It really is quite amazing to consider how many different natural landscapes exist in the state of California! It really does function as its own little nation doesn't it? Awesome coastal views, pure beauty!

Fascinating to learn about the erosion and glad local officials are involved. This doesn't appear to be a problem that can be fixed and the housing needs to be removed for the safety of the students or whoever lives there. It's time to move on...
