    I know a little about the coast of East Anglia because I have worked on the geology of the area, but I know slightly more about Romney Marsh, that a friend of mine was studying aspects of during the time I was working in that area. She ended one of her reports by writing that our current coastlines will become increasingly difficult and expensive to maintain, and painful decisions will need to be taken. That was before we were aware of just how quickly the rate of sea level rise is accelerating due to climate change. We have learned much about improving sea defence during my lifetime, but no matter how much money is spent on maintaining our current coastlines, many parts of the east and south coasts will be lost during this century, and some British people will become climate refugees, like those arriving here from other parts of the world today.

    I live in a coastal town which has a main railway line passing right along the coast on a large embankment. They have had to keep adding large boulders every year as the embankment is getting battered each winter.

    • @michaelstamper5604

      Johnson visited South Yorkshire after rivers which the government "couldn't afford" to clear and dredge (presumably because the Westminster branch of the Cosy Cronyism Club couldn't afford yet another holiday home in the Caribbean or a second space rocket for casual days out) flooded vast areas of many towns, villages and valuable farmland, rendering it useless for decades. He wandered around aimlessly, achieving absolutely nothing as always. Eventually he was told firmly to go away permanently since he wasn't doing anything or willing to do anything worth doing because human lives essentially don't matter to Tories. If we want a worthwhile society thar actually cares about himan beings, our only option is a socialist government.

    I was looking at south ice caps not long ago on google maps,About more 3,000 miles of ice at the south pole,It getting very slushy,Melting fast,hate to think for the future get further flooding,About time to build walls around the edges of coast lines,Not only it save more land from caving in to seas,Also create more Jobs as well

    Wouldn’t you think with all the profits made from these big corporations they should be made to pay for all the defences around Britain. After all government spending on the public sector should have been doing more to protect our country.

    Dubai tried artificial islands and affected coastlines beyond there development. An upside to some reclamation was by using concrete spike barriers it reduced the wave impact and also created habitats for sea life. As an Island nation I would have thought retaining and even reclaiming coastline would be a high priority, China has also reclaimed coastline for airports etc although the quality could be better I hear.

    been has been happening around the Norfolk coast for the last 20 odd years,Any one lives near the coast when coast collapsing in to Sea,Best to move out,Get your old home knocked down,Or end up facing something worse,Something got to be done,Or end up loosing land in the near future as ice caps melt while sea levels rising,I heard the UK more likely be under sea by the time the ice caps melted away

    How can the coastline be disappearing? As the coastline erodes so it appears a slightly different place.. Successive recent governments have neglected the sea defences and deliberately allowing nature to take its course just as they are doing with farmland . Ever heard of set aside?

  • @chlbo9763
    @chlbo9763 3 місяці тому

    coastline erosion is a natural process... you can slow it down but inevitably coasts will be eroded. Climate change is only speeding up the rate of erosion. It's also important to realise that economically it will be expensive to keep on building sea walls which are being eroded quicker and quicker due to climate change and as the coastal manager said, to build sea defences you have to consider the environmental impacts.... such as building coastal defences here might causes erosion further along the coast. That looked like a pretty small town surrounded by lots of fields, so it might be worthwhile letting it erode and for the government to spend money on protecting more built up and populated coastlines. Even the sea defence shell built will only last and estimated 15 years despite costing millions.

    The Dutch and Netherlands manage there coastline well. With humungus defences so more land is available for planting . But the EU want farms closed to allow the sea to take over again. Hence so much protest from the farmers there.

    The method of saving the land before not to slide is scement structure but at least slighty inclined one \.( If the water is too rough of course). Hence even the concrite block won't work. The reality is bending with the nature. Bedding the big stone in wide slow sinking shore may work.

    Homeless people sleeping in doorways. Opioid addicts out of their mind and women so drunk they urinated on the streets. It's a sad declined country
