Chances of turbo failure or gasket failure is always high in a turbocharged three cylinder, unless it's strongly built, 5 years since nexon launch is too short to predict the life of a three cylinder turbo as the market is just flooded with three cylinder turbo now
3 cyc is not as efficient as 4 cyl. Vibration and reliability are the main concerns of 3 cylinders and expect less engine life as well compared to 4 cyl.
A 3 cylinder is more fuel economy and cost effective than a 4 cylinder . So we need to compromise on power and vibration. So manufacturers are adding turbo for power.
Hi bro im your big fan. Im planning to buy Nissan Magnite Non turbo - because that only matches my budget. So, can u please advise me whether it would be feasible to pull 5 people while driving? Even if it can pull on normal roads, would that be feasible for hill station ride...i mean can that car pull off 5 people and luggages?
Long life ku 4 cylinder or even number cylinder engines always better, and some of the old Suzuki engines were three cylinder thaan it was reliable, those days the power of the three cylinder engines never used to exceed more than 65 - 70 ps, but these days the non turbo ones itself is 70-90 hp, for eg the one in kiger is only 71 but kiger is a big car, and Tata punch is 83 ps, so my take is three how much ever balancing is done to reduce vibration it's all depends on the quality of the build, even brands like Mazda, Mercedes has had three cylinder but they were costly, now our Desi brands or budget brand engines are built at a cost, so the life is very much 50 /50 dhaan, specially the turbo ones la it all depends on how well the engine is built. @@sudheeshkumar9632 sir I have been in engine design and maintenance, the three cylinder turbos have always been a knife edge than, there have been reliability issues, but that entirely depends on how the engine is designed and developed. @@sudheeshkumar9632 because in a three cylinder engine you have to push it to get the maximum from it, specially to extract more power they turbo charge it, so when a three cylinder is laboured all the time by forced Induction the chances of things getting failed is high compared to it's 4 cylinder NA or even 4 cylinder turbos, the build has to be such a way that it has to negate each and every issue while designing a thee cylinder, right from engine vibration to the materials used to make the engines. A 1.5 mpi from hyundai is always better than the 1 liter turbo from venue, because your 1.5 specially in the city at low speeds will not labour much because it's a 4 cylinder, 4 cylinder engines are naturally torque heavy than the 3 cylinder turbos, so if driven smoothly you will get a good mileage in the city, as for 3 cylinder turbo below the 2000 rpm the turbo will not kick in so there won't be much power generated so once the rpm exceeds 2000 the turbo kicks in this will lead to high fuel consumption as the engine boosted on and off, so ideally three cylinder turbos are best used if your usage is mostly highways where the engine does not labour at high speeds and you get good mileage. So if your usage is mostly city only na venue 1.2 4 cylinder is better than the turbo
Plus three cylinder by itself will vibrate more, and as the time goes not it might increase depending on the build or damping done, because three is a unbalanced engine. For me going from hyundai 1.5 to a vw group 1 liter Is downgrade and moreover shell will not do much of a difference, usually they recommend high octane petrol for high compression engines
Main reason for Turbo is for push. Since 75% usage in city, so traffic, when you are not gonna go high speed then turbo doesn't open up. Also when mileage is concern, Go for naturally aspired 4 cyl with hybrid technology. So solve all your requirements
If you're usage is mainly within the city, go for a 4 cyl and not 3 cyl or turbo. 4cyl does better during the snail pace movements in bumper to bumper traffic as well as it takes care of the mileage.
