The point about HR going up during the taper is important. People don't account for that and start thinking things are going wrong, when they are where they should be.
Your videos are the next best thing to having a coach! My wife and I are in our fifties and we love your honesty, relatability and communication style. Also, we play a drinking game(non-alcohol) where we drink every time you say "training!"
We wish you all the best for Dublin Marathon next week, Stephen! The collective energy of your followers from all over the world are flowing to you. Go for Paris!
I ran a marathon race yesterday. I did 3 three-week taper by reducing the volume. In the last week, I wondered about the resting heart rate and heart rate variability. I thought there was a flu coming on. Fortunately, everything went well and in the race I got a new PR from 3:32 to 3:29 in windy weather. I didn't even look at my heart rate in the race. Hill running as a lesson from this video. Good luck in Dublin. Thanks for the video!
Thanks I’m on Day 8 out from my marathon! Goal is to sub 3 at the age of 41 😜 I have an excellent coach but was worried because I’ve always had a 3 or 2 week taper and this time I never decreased intensity, but I decreased volume at 7 days out. This made me feel so much better!!! I was thinking omg I’m going to be exhausted at the line!! Good luck to you!
Thanks Stephen! With your videos you helped me realising my dream for a sub 3h marathon age 47 :). I really appreciate your honesty and admire your dedication!! I wish you all the best for Dublin 👍🏼
Glad to hear a pro echo what I've always felt was right for me in a taper. Volume goes down, intensity goes up. Puts me in a strong, confident place mentally.
Another great vid thanks! NYC marathon in 16 days. I'm planning to start my taper with 14 days to go after a half marathon at marathon pace in the race kit.
I have a half marathon in three weeks. Unfortunately I picked up a knock last week so now I feel like I'm just trying to survive until race day. Great advice on the taper.
I like your approach, which is more “pushy” than what I usually hear from other coaches or other channels, and that resonates! It’s nice to remember that running a race will be hard and be well prepared for that. I also like your focus on hill work. Thanks for sharing your valuable experience!
I started doing what Renato Canova does to his athletes. He never let’s them drop below 90% of goal race pace during taper week because it keeps the muscle tension, tendon strength and other factors sharp. It is easier to go from 90% to 100% of goal race pace than 65% to 100% of goal race pace. A sample session during taper week would be 30-45 minutesp @ 90% of goal race pace. I believe the last long run session for the marathon is 35k @ 95-97% of goal race pace 3-4 weeks out. He only allows his athletes to do long runs once every two weeks but they aren’t long easy runs but long fast runs of a minimum of 90% of goal MP.
Thanks for the advice about keeping positive and 'don't fall asleep '. I'm doing my 2nd marathon in 9 days so needed something good vibes from your post. Have really enjoyed listening to you while in my cold bath today ! Keeping Going.
Great advice. I'm two weeks from Cork 2024 marathon. Training hasn't gone to plan as I had 5 weeks off with pneumonia but have recovered well and I picked up the training again three weeks ago. I thought I would drop out but have done some long runs now and feel ready to give it a go. Good advice to try and keep the muscles taught and don't "go to sleep"!
I just ran my first marathon 13 days ago! I got a bad respiratory virus right at the start of my taper so didn’t do much. Ended up doing 4 short runs with a little bit of marathon pace. I did finish my marathon and was happy about that but definitely think I didn’t get enough speed work during the taper and felt like it slowed me down on race day BUT when you’re sick there’s not much else you can do!
Your advice on muscle tension is quality! I was sick with Covid in the last 3rd and 2nd week before Chicago. With not having ran for two weeks muscle was soft so on race week I took a dip in the ocean on the Monday and Thursday to create tension. Race day went amazing and legs felt perfect! If it wasn't for your masterclass I wouldn't of known any of that 👍
Lovely timing, thanks. Tapering for a half marathon on November 5th. What you're saying aligns with what I have planned. Good to hear the phycology stuff, too. I always seem to go a bit barking mad and do my own head in, in the lead up to an important race. Cheers, Mark
These videos are just the most perfect timing ahead of Valencia in December! Thank you so much Stephen, the content is just phenomenal and really motivational.
Thanks for the tips Stephen! In the final month of training for CIM and appreciate all the tips as I prepare to taper for race day. Great job crushing it at Dublin!!
Great video great insight got a 50 mile race coming up soon but I forgot about it almost and cause I had a free entry kind of snuck up on me so it’s like I got a total of like five weeks of training and I don’t know if I am training long enough that I need to taper but lotta really good insight appreciate it
Nico Roche commented about the TdF once, he always kept pushing on the rest days. A body in motion must stay in motion, once you stop you would need to push hard to get going again.
Thank you so much for all of your content. This video was very helpful. I just started my taper for the new York marathon, and I was going insane . This just gave me so many ideas of things to do while tapering ❤
Didn't know much about the muscle tension as a long time runner, good tip! Exactly 2 weeks out from a hard half so looking to implement this now! Great video
Wow, amazing advice and answered so many questions I had about the taper. Thanks so much Stephen!! 🙏 Giving me a lot more confidence with just 2 weeks to go to NYC 🗽
This was really helpful. Thank you! Another thing Ive learned (the hard way): don't do a bunch of running on grass the week before the race (unless that is already part of your regular training). I thought it would be nice to run on a soft surface, but it was more challenging in a new way and it didn't help give that 'snappy' feeling come race day either. Rooting for you Stephen!
100% agree. I’ve done two marathons, 1 virtual and 1 real, and both times I felt I tapered too much. For me I felt I lost more cardio than adaptive gains.
Yep. Marathon Auckland NZ 29 Oct. I've stuck with my 7 days of running but will take off Friday before. Day before will be 3k with my strides. I'm keeping my intervals but only doing 50% and this week did 70%. I'm 60 and aiming for sub 3hr if weather permits. My PB is 3h08.
Good luck on Sunday, Stephen. I have my 8th marathon in 3 weeks in Maspalomas. Do you have any tips or video for controlling race day nerves/excitement. I always feel confident going into the race but as soon as it starts my heart rate shoots up and the 1st few miles feel like a struggle. My race day heart rate is always way higher than in training.
Hope your well?yes New York coming up I’ve just had a nasty cold knocked my training for the whole week and I feel I need to get my breathing back up to speed any recommendations cp🏃🏻♂️
The mistake people make he says is they lower the intensity during a taper when they should only lower the volume. Thus, a correct taper you run less frequency and fewer miles. However, you want to continue high intensity intervals.
Ahhhh, was wondering why my resting heart rate raises a bit on tapers. Thought I was losing fitness. I credit you for my awesome first marathon...most of the people say slow long runs, and sure i did most slowish, towards the end i added in some harder effort long runs. Like you i felt like I needed to know what a marathon effort felt like and it paid dividends. Now to get sub 3 hour by April/May.
I think I over-tapered for my most recent marathon. I think I took it too easy, and I ended up ill for race day. Could be a coincidence but either way I wasn’t able to race as well as I’d trained to.

Having your videos back regularly is so good. Hope you are doing well Scully.
Timing is GREAT for this video as I get ready to run my first marathon in 3 weeks from Sunday!
Tell us how it goes!
I’m racing as well in 2 weeks! Best wishes🎉
Good luck I am also running in a marathon 2 weeks from yesterday (Sunday).
Good luck !😃@@keithmackall

With a half marathon coming up in about four weeks this is a perfect reminder to "not fall asleep" during the upcoming tapper. Keep up the good work!

6 weeks out from my 26.2. I love the taper!! Intensity definitely helps my mind and body stay ready to race and that its going to be hard!
Doing CIM?
@@rollingknight2012Yes sir!
@@jimoconnor8597 nice! I'll be there as well. Good luck to you!

Hey Scully. Your videos by far at the best on UA-cam. I appreciate all you do brotha. Good luck in future!

Yes also lowers muscle tone, as do hot baths etc
Honey stop, Stephen just dropped a video

Is it okay to keep doing strength/prehab workouts during the taper? When is the best time decrease volume and intensity of strength training?
Hi what muscle cream or oil do you rub on your legs and why . Thanks 🙏
How much volume I should cut? I have 2 weeks of taper and I’m coming from running 100k a week (62 miles per week)
Stephen U can do it.
So are you saying you rather your legs be tight goin into marathon rather than bit soft,?
I’m running my first marathon in Miami 2024 😮💨😆
Thank you ❤
