I have been a gold miner for 30 years. We used to put the mercury in a pan like you did with the concentrates, then squeeze it through a cloth and came out with an amalgamate nugget of gold and mercury including all of the fines. Then burn it off , then just touch it and it would break up into all of the original gold.

    • @freemanfornow264

9:40 You had plenty of mercury to collect all the gold. What you failed to do was tumble it together. You have to constantly mix the gold, dirt, and mercury. That allows all the gold to be captured by the mercury. Tumbling is best, because you can set the tumbler and let it run for an hour. But I suppose mixing with a kitchen mixer would do. Even a magnetic stir pellet in a beaker. The important thing is constant agitation.

    Hi Pauly! great video!!
Very cool and educational to see how mercury behaves in water and around gold.
Most of us (hobby) prospectors have found some flakes of gold covered in mercury.
Very interesting to see how it can be extracted or cleaned with a retort, many thanks for that!

    Hi Pauly,
Of course, it‘s super cool to play with mercury but be aware, you created a million microscopic tiny beads, you'll never collect (check the scratches in your pan with a loupe). They will vaporize over the time but stay in your shop forever...
You'll also never get all of the mercury out of the black sand, now it's hazardous waste.
In order to avoid the vaporization, all things that were in contact with the mercury, should stored under water or at least in sealable plastic bags (e.g. the retort).
    Best regards from Germany!

Maybe that is why I am how I am now! Drain Bamage. So many things we played with back then that is not allowed today. What do you get when you mix powder charcoal, sulfur, and one other ingredient? Second comment several months later, I went to a class and the teacher said that the retort should be totally cool before removing, you can just leave it or after 20 -30 minutes if not cool then drip water over the top. But to leave it to cool until you can remove it by hand, with only a plastic glove. Otherwise you can release the mercury vapor

Also the best retort is the one that looks kinda like a still. If you place gold leaf on top of the beaker of Mercury, it will absorb the gold leaf like a sponge.

I remember finding mercury for the first time and a well known miner I know told me what it was. He said I can touch it without a glove in its liquid state. When I told my family this they all freaked out except for my grandparents may they RIP. I asked my grandfather, didn't you used to play with this stuff from the thermometers back when you were a kid? He says most definitely we didn't all the time and the rest of the family were speechless. It was the funniest reaction I've seen with my whole family. Priceless.

Try putting it all into a tumbler at low speed for a day. The Gold/Mercury amalgams should attach to each other and form a ball that you can just pick out of the black sand. The other trick is to do it like you did but work it in a pan full of water with your fingers and try to work the little pieces all together into a ball.
