That ascending lick thing reminds me of what a famous bandleader said to his pianist (can't remember who the bandleader was, but I think the pianist was Kenny Werner). When they were due to perform on the upcoming evening, the bandleader, talking to the pianist about creating musical ideas, said, " if you find a good note, just play that one all night"
I had an organist at my church who used to play bass with his foot and his left hand on the upper manual & crank the Leslie while I was playing bass. It infuriated me. I used to slap for absolutely no reason or chord when he did that. Play YOUR instrument; let me play mine.
Was it a pipe organ? If so, those don't belong in bands that expect every member to have a significant part. Once the pipes start singing, they BECOME the band, and everything else is forced to follow their lead. Such is the nature of the instrument that was once considered the voice of the divine.
@@VestedUTuber No… it was a Hammond B3 (that they painted white… sacrilegious) with a Leslie amp. What made it annoying is although we were on a stage, the musicians were in a pit on stage left. The drums were behind us in a plexiglass pit. The Hammond B3 and the Leslie was above the pit, so the lower spinning horn was aimed right at our chest. So the amp is next to the organist, but almost literally in our faces. Meanwhile, as the bassist, I’m playing out of a 2x18" bass cabinet, laying horizontally on the ground. No one needs two 18-inch speakers in that close proximity. And when it became a battle of volume, the bass is just filling up the pit & bouncing around the walls, muddying the sound. It was a cornucopia of stupidity. It was immature & disrespectful, yes, but I was 16 at the time, and it’s hard to out-disrespect a teenager. I was annoyed, but I enjoyed myself. And just to complete the visual, we also had a pianist it the TOTAL OPPOSITE side of the stage, by herself. And I mean about 50 feet away. With the cacophony in the pit, we couldn’t hear her, so we had a monitor to hear what she was doing (she was the choir director). But when the choir played, we’d hear her in the monitor, then acoustically hear a slap-back delay of the piano traveling to the pit. This was back in the mid-90s before in-ear monitors were everywhere & reasonably-priced.
Drummers will love you for dragging the time while still on the beat. It's the tempo equivalent to a spicy chord, we love that crap. M E T R I C M O D U L A T I O N
The bassist bit reminds me of that joke about the conductor coming back from lunch and the bassist and the violinist are having a massive fight. The conductor says "What the hell is going on here!?" - the violinist says "Hey, he's over-reacting, all I did was put one of his strings out of tune!" and the bassist says "That's not it, HE WON'T TELL ME WHICH ONE!"
One other tip: if your keyboard is capable of it, put it in analog synth mode and try to replicate a piano sound rather than using the built-in piano samples, but make sure the sound is just slightly off. It'll annoy and confuse the shit out of everyone.
That was fun. I think little moments of timing spice or tension-resolution add to the music. even dance music has drops and breaks to spice it up a little from the steady 4-on-the-floor beat for dancing.

I’ve been on both sides of this (as a bass player and as a piano player for a choir). I can confirm this is annoying but also the piano player doesn’t care.

If your singer can't sing over SPICY jazz chords, fire him or her. There's at least 4 notes in the chord that work, if not 5 or 6, maybe even 7. Pick one, and SING! Speaking as a singer with relative pitch.

That's not how you do it. You play only non third chords with bass notes either a while step or two hole steps below the root no matter if the chord should have a major 7th. When improvising ignore the chord and avoid the major/minor modal system. Be sure to alternate between reinterpretng the meter in 5 or 7 while including odd tuplets.
