X Carve Engraving with Diamond Drag by Inventables

- I have made a mount for the Sioux pneumatic engraving pen and now I make a additional engraving tool. A diamond drag engraving tool. I purchased a diamond drag engraving tool and with a spring from Tormach. Link: www.tormach.com....
I designed a drag tool to install in the same mount as the Sioux engraving pen. This diamond drag is very nice clean engraving. These two options now for the X-Carve are great and work very well.

Looks like it is working very well!
+bcbloc02 Works better than expected. Thanks, Randy
ignore this if you already know g code. just trying to help.. look for something in your code that says G43. that calls up your tool length offset. shortly after you should see something like R1.0. The R isnt for Randy, but rather for Retract. that controls the height it will raise to between letters. I always set it just high enough to clear screws heads or hold downs. also, after each lone of lettering, you might change the G01 to G00. that would speed up your retract time greatly.
+Mitchell Martin No just working on learning g-code. i found in V-Carve where i could change the retract height. I will also look at the G43 and G01. thanks for the help Mitchell. Randy
+Randy Richard well. depending on how that program encodes it, the g43 might not be present. some programs like mastercam encode with little differences than I would use if I were writing the code. but generally, that should be used so the CNC knows the length of the tool/bit. its a good place to start looking, but like I said, it may be coded funny. having never used the software, I can't really say. good luck. and thanks for posting the videos.
Nice! I love how one tool (X-carve) leads to other ideas and options. Well done!
+Metallurg33 Thanks, I agree. Randy
very interesting. The tag at the end with the black paint inlay looks great.
+russhellmy When filled they look pretty good. Thanks, Randy
Well the dog certainly got interested when the air was turned on
+Drew Diaz Yep kind of noisy. Next will be a solenoid for the air. Thanks, Randy
Pretty frickin cool Randy! Great job in making the holders, and the brass tags look great! Nice job man!
+Ray Caniglia Thanks Ray. Send me you logo I will see what I can do. Randy
+Randy Richard Will do buddy, Thanks!
Good Job Randy I think both tags look great. Very nice demo.
+Fred German Thanks Fred. Randy
I am super impressed randy , that does a great job ! Thumbs up man ..
+ShawnMrFixit Lee It really does, Thanks Shawn. Randy
That was very cool, nice job Randy.
+rchopp Thank you, Randy
Wonderful machine Randy :) Gotta chuckle - the engraving sound on first test was like a cat in distress! :) Nice job with the diamond holder - tip reminds me of a grinding wheel dresser with diamond tip. Great results.
+ChrisB257 You Tube blocked the video because they thought it was copyrighted music, I had to file a dispute. LOL. Both work great, very pleased with the results. The diamond is quite and fast and very nice. Those are 1" disc, so tight quarters. The XCarve performed well. Thanks, Randy
That works just like a CNC plasma cutter table.
+1970chevelle396 Oh yeah no difference. Thanks Ken. Randy
cool setups for the pen and dag tip, that pen will give me nightmares about sitting in the dentist chair.
Cheers Randy
+Phil's Projects I agree, the noise is a bit nerve racking, but it does work well. The diamond drag is very nice. Thanks Randy
You are well on the way to being an automation expert. Thanks for sharing.
+cerberus Thanks Harold. Randy
Jealous of guys like you, got a nice spread, organized shop, nice tools. Ah well, for now I'm down in my basement for now, debating whether to move out of city and to the suburbs.....
+Josh Russell No need to be jealous. The value of the spread is in the dumps and getting worse everyday, the shop is not organized at all, the tools are all used and some a lot, except for the ones I make. Yep get out of the basement or you will end up like Brad Jacobs (Basement Shop Guy on YT). Thanks Randy
Like the other commenter said about G43 & or Rx.x; since you have to touch off every time you change a tool (whereas with machines that have self locating tool holders G43 is significant to change Z offset for each holder). Another approach, albeit a little crude, is to open the G code file in notepad and find the repeating retract height and do a find and replace Z1.1 (or whatever it is) with Z0.XX, just be sure not to make a mistake and not have enough clearance to go over the screws if any of the positioning moves go over them. Nothing more annoying than cutting air, except maybe crashing your machine ....
+YCM30cnc Thank you for the suggestions. I found where I can adjust the Retract height with in V-Carve. I won't have to dive into the G code just yet. Thanks, Randy
Enjoyed...pretty cool machine!
+outsidescrewball Thanks chuck. Randy
slick stuff randy I realy need to learn more about cnc
+Chris Anderson It is being very fun. Thanks Randy
Randy, you can change the G-code by opening it in notepad and edit it . Save it and reload it .
+Doug Rundell Thanks Doug. I will try that. I found where I can adjust the retract height so that will help. Randy
Look a the very top of the tooling paremters field. there is 2 settings for the Z clearance... You have your safety heights too high. The lower one can be set just high enough to get the engravers out of the grove. The upper one needs to be big enough to clear the screw heads.
+John Ware Thank you for the info. I have adjusted the setting and this process is much faster. Thank you.
I use the desktop version. My home brew CNC is limited to 25 X 18Y and 6Z so it didnt make sence to spend twice as much to generate code for areas i cant cut anyway. :)
Looking good Randy. Need to shorten your retract height. Sweet
+TheJR914 Thank you, yep I figured out how to do that last night. It will be faster next time. Randy
That would look really cool if they were powder coated black and then engraved.
+Gary Hill I will have to look into that. Randy
+Randy Richard Here are some ideas for blackening. There are also commercial solutions.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_oxide
randy great work .
+Robert Kutz Thanks Bob, Randy
cool stuff ,nice job, keep it up...
+price tagg Thank you PT. Randy
Thats pretty cool Randy. I can't wait to see all of the engraving you'll be doing in future videos.
Put me in line for one of the brass tags with your logo if you are going to offer them for sale.
Gary
+Gary Hill Thanks Gary. A brass tag with each Dovetail cutter. I didn't think about selling them. Randy
Pretty cool Randy. Can you reduce the z travel? That would save a bunch of time.
edit: I didn't wait till the vid was finished before I mentioned the z travel.
+Steve S Thanks Steve, I am working on figuring that out. The default is 1", I have email's out trying to get some insight. Thanks Randy
The diamond one sure is a lot quiter
+Gary Hill Way nicer since it is just being drug along. Very nice engrave. Thanks, Randy
Randy that looks really nice. I missed where you picked up the diamond engraver.
Jim
+Skip Tracer I actually bought it from Tormach. But since I have looked around and found that there are a lot out there. Worked great. Thanks Jim.
+Skip Tracer Jim here is the link, www.tormach.com/store/index.php?app=ecom&ns=prodsearchp&ecom--prodsearch--string=diamond+drag
I purchased the 2 springs and the 120 deg diamond. I am going to get a 90 deg one also.
Thanks Randy
Jim
no retract plane or clearance plane setting? looks cool
+pmproducts I am using V-CarvePro and have not yet figured out how to change this setting. In the g-code I see the command. Thanks Randy
+Randy Richard
We use VCP and Aspire fairly often on our Busselato - If you have any questions and don't want to call England for an answer, we'd be happy to help.
nice machine you are building there :-) it looks very nice.. good thinking for the x-carve..... what about making a vinyl sticker cutter now the toolbox is open :-) thanks for sharing, i enjoy your work :-)
+Kim nielsen (steelcnc) I have not looked into it yet, but i think it is possible. Thanks Randy
How do you get from the design in VCarve Pro, to cutting? Does it send the GCode straight to X-Carve?
I'm deseperate to see the process, please show. :-D
+TheRangeControl basic proces -- generate the g-code in v-carve. BE SURE to select the X-carve pre processor and save, Now load up the universal g-code sender proram ( available on the net free) and use that to send to g-code to the X-carve. You DO NOT need easel to do this. Plenty of stuff on utube showing that process.
since the brass tags have a press fit into their 'nests', could a post be setup instead of the screw ? say the hold is .250... could the post be something like .245 ?
Maybe, the tags are not perfectly flat, they fit well in there nest. I would have to try that, it would be faster for sure. Thanks you.
Wow Randy there's no turning back. You been bit by the CNC bug.
+Edge Precision I am liking it. I was going to make the fixture since it was just light machining and drilling, but I did not have enough confidence yet with Fusion 360. I made the fixture manually. I will get there, just need the time. Thanks Randy
I know its frustrating because the learning curve is high because of software and machine control tooling everything at once. But once it starts to make sense it will open so many possibility's. You be converting you mill to CNC next. You will say man I got to crank handles again get hit with hot chips.
+Randy Richard I wouldn't worry about the learning curve its not that steep....2-3 months from now, you'll be looking to replace the fiberboard bed on the X-Carve with aluminum so you can start using mist coolant!
+l0ckcr4ck3r You know I was already measuring for that. The learning is coming pretty fast, but i enjoy it.
Genial
What program are you using to control the X-Carve. How did you control the X-Carve to only engrave the circle.
i use V-Carve Pro to generate the g-code, then use universal Gcode sender to send the gcode to the X carve
What software are you using to write the gcode? Fusion 360 has the retract in the height option of the tool.
+zomie1 I used V-Carve Pro for the tags. I am not confident enough yet with Fusion 360. Thanks Randy
@Randy Richard In The Shop.... You desperately need to adjust your z safety height setting.
Oh yes, that is all under control now.
video of revision please ?
What was that dial based measuring device used, prior to cutting, and mounted on?
+TheRangeControl That is an Interapid Dial Test Indicator with 0.0005" increments. It allows to mount the fixture parallel or square to the X-Carve X and Y axis.
When you say the fixture, do you mean the spindle and spindle mount assembly?
+TheRangeControl The "Fixture" is the alu. plate which is mounted to the table of the machine. The spindle it the Tool. In this case I am using an Pneumatic Engraving Pen in place of a spinning spindle motor.
ahhh... I've soooo much to learn.
I'd better get back to trying to figure out getting models to gcode to cutter, and hold off on your advanced level toolwork before...
...I end up spraining my brain. LOL
+TheRangeControl I am going to make a short vid tomorrow showing how I use V-Carve and UGS to get the code to the X-Carve.
did it leave a raised burr?
Yes with the Air engraver a small burr, I ran them across the Scotch bright wheel to smooth. Soft material pushes up a burr. Comes out nice.
Is this a drag tool?
Yes it is. Diamond, works great.
@@RRINTHESHOP Awesome, I'm thinking to get one for my cnc router, but are you using it with the spindler on?
@@steamtech No . It is mounted solid, no rotation. It spring loaded and is dragged. I showed this in a video long ago.
Hi Randy,
Looks really nice. You have it running good. You might want to take a look at this web site if you are interested in different effects on metal. You might want to make your buttons out of steel and dye them before engraving. Here is a link for the dyes: steelfxpatinas.com/product-category/metal-dyes/
Thanks for sharing.
Take Care,
Reid
+Reid Eichner Thanks Reid, I will check it out. Randy
can you do cad drawings I need a little help with something?
+Chris Anderson Chris, send me an email maybe i can help. Randy
Ok
That painful to watch that spindle go up and down like that, so much time wasted.
+Tony W I agree, I am just learning. I have figured out some to speed things up but not all. Thanks, Randy
Randy Richard
I think you have done a great job with what you know. Keep trying i only got my 1000 machine a week ago in Australia and watched your videos for ideas.
you need work your control program.
now you wasting about 70% of machining time on pointless up-down movement of Z axis.
+vasyapupken Your right. It's called stepover. Killing me also.
