    As a surprise birthday gift for me, my wife booked us to tour Lanes End Farm in Versailles, Ky. so I could Zenyatta. She was still roughly 3 months away from having this young lad when I was there. But what a physical specimen this mare is to see up close and personal. As big or bigger than most colts and geldings. The tour manager at Lanes End that day told me she dwarfs most of their stallions. LOL. Looked like she could've saddled up that very day and gone out and won the Hollywood Gold Cup!!

    when Baby Z walked under Zen in the pasture i think i about died from the cuteness. Zen is such a patient, and phenomenal mother. I'm already looking forward to her 2013 Tapit foal. And much thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Moss for allowing Zen's fans to follow Zen through her career as a spectacular racehorse to her transition to a wonderful broodmare.

    This video just makes me smile ear to ear. What a great Mom she is already. She is very nurturing. As you all have said, she had the very best trainer taking care of her, as well as Dottie and Jerry and Ann Moss, a great manager and owners. She could not have had a better "family." They love her very much and it shows.

    I have adored Queen Z from day one, but it was the love you Ann and Jerry and John and Dottie, and all the crew at barn 55, and basically everyone that you had take care of her that helped her too. This horse brought me out of my depression over losing my Mother, and I educated everyone around me about her, and guess what?, They are simply ecstatic over her now. I just loved the fact that I saw her being raised with love, and not the amount of money she could make, Great job all, Love, Michele.

    I believe that she nursed and raised the foal until he or she was weaned. She was reported as being a very good mother. Btw, nurse mares can be mares that just had their foals weaned and are still producing milk. If they continue to be stimulated to produce milk they will. But they can come from taking young foals away which is extremely sad.

    @mistyraestables don't know if you're joking or not. But yes, I think 99.9% of Zenyattas fans know she had a colt by Tapit about 145 lbs and stood up about 30 min after birth which was about 11:45ish on Zenyattas birthday. :) one think though, to me he looks nothing like Rachael Alexandra. She looks to be a dark bay but Z's baby is chestnut with a blaze in the shape of the letter P. :) hope that helps. :)

    • @dhoney8585
      @dhoney8585 7 років тому

      in some situations it can be too soon but most times it best to get the foal used to the halter at a young age, so they don't have issues later on with tack and whatnot.

    • @marysueeasteregg
      @marysueeasteregg 5 років тому

      At the large farms, very early introduction of the halter seems to be standard. Maybe (just a guess on my part) because they have so many horses to deal with? Lane's End is currently standing 18 stallions, and the farm has 3000+ acres. Has to be a lot of mares & babies, plus yearlings. There's also the issue that Thoroughbreds (and other racing breeds) enter training earlier than most horses.

    No Zenyatta is taking care of her own foal. Lane's End would only put them on nurse mares if the mother rejects the baby, which is what happened to Zenyatta's pasture mate Tasty Temptation, or if the mare dies. The nurse mare used for Tasty's foal lost her own foal.

    Most nurse mare's have their foals pulled from them and are either sent to auctions or bottle fed. Cattletsburg KY auction (fortunately closed now) had whole trailer loads of nurse mare foals only a week or two old brought in and run thru their auction last year. It's a nasty business, just 2 months ago there were nurse mare foals listed in the Cincinnati Cragslist only 2 weeks old.

    I know it can be brutal but if its done right it can be okay for both foals and mares. In some cases though if the nurse mares foal is already weaned by the time a nurse mare is needed for another foal they can give the mare oxytocin. In my opinion this is the most humain. I have heard of some places that are trying to only have their nurse mares foal every 2 years and in between use oxytocin to continue milk production. I hope they succeed.

    My questions is she nursing him or did they pull him and put him on a nurse mare? If so what happened to the nurse mare's foal. A friend just rescued two nurse mare foals from an auction the other day... 3 days old. Disgusting

    • @marysueeasteregg
      @marysueeasteregg 5 років тому

      As someone else has explained: nurse mares are NOT routinely used in non-emergency circumstances in the Thoroughbred industry. (Or by other breeding industries. Other breeds besides TBs utilize nurse mares; 4 or 5 times more quarter Horses are born in the U.S. yearly than Thoroughbreds.) Nurse mares ARE used when a mare dies at birth or before the foal is ready to be weaned, when she rejects her foal, has inadequate milk production, or is seriously ill. The use of nurse mares is rare, but they are invaluable in such cases.
      Horse of the year Rachel Alexandra was raised by a nurse mare because her dam, Lotta Kim, refused to have anything to do with her. Purely by coincidence/bad luck, Rachel Alexandra's second foal, the good stakes filly Rachel's Valentina, was raised by a nurse mare because Rachel incurred a life-threatening bowel perforation foaling her. Rachel had lovingly raised her first foal, a colt by Curlin, just as Zenyatta has raised all her own foals. I take for granted that a nurse mare was similarly utilized in Ireland when American champion Royal Delta died at Coolmore soon after foaling a Galileo filly in 2017.
      It is false, as a certain party on the Web claims, that nurse mares are used routinely because the valuable TB broodmares have to be separated from their foals for their next breeding session. If that goes on, it is FAR from the norm, and the breeders are idiots, for reasons I'll explain below.
      There's simply *no need* for nurse mares to be used because the mare has to be shipped to her next breeding session, as is sometimes claimed. TB mares are concentrated in Kentucky, and within a few hours vanning of most big name stallions. They can be separated from their foals for a few hours for a breeding session. Zenyatta resides at Lane's End Farm, and all her foals have been birthed there, and mothered *by her* on site. (She even remained at the hospital with her mortally ill War Front colt, who died at a few days old from meconium poisoning.) None of the stallions to whom Zenyatta has been bred stand at Lane's End, but they have all been Kentucky-based sires: Bernardini (Darley Stud); War Front (Claiborne Farm); Tapit (Gainesway); Medaglia D'Oro (Stonewall Stallions); and Into Mischief (Spendthrift).
      In the case of mares who are scheduled to be covered by a stallion out of state or simply too far away for a simple vanning from their homebase, it is standard practice for the broodmare to be shipped far ahead of time to the farm or the immediate area at which their next breeding is scheduled, and their in-utero foal is birthed there. Secretariat was *conceived* in Kentucky in 1969, at Claiborne Farm where Bold Ruler stood stood, but he was bred -- that is *born* -- in 1970 at Meadow Stable in Virginia, because his dam Somethingroyal was being bred to Meadow Stable's stallion First Landing in 1970, the mating which produced her 1971 foal Capital Asset. At some point after the weaning of her 1969 foal The Bride (Secretariat's full sister), the pregnant Somethingroyal was shipped to Virginia, where she awaited the birth of Secretariat, whom she subsequently mothered.
      What I have described is standard practice for small-time breeders, too. I have friends who raced a small string for about 15 years, including several homebreds out of their sole broodmare. She was bred, at various times, to studs in Maryland, Pennsylvania and Kentucky. She raised all her own foals -- because like Somethingroyal, she was shipped to the appropriate state midway through her pregnancies, wintered there, and remained there at least through the weaning of the foal she was carrying when she was shipped.
      Using a nurse mare in non-emergency circumstances would be stupid financially. Why on earth would a breeding mare's owner want to pay the rental fee and/or boarding costs for a second mare, if it's not absolutely essential? Horses are expensive to keep. A one-time shipping fee is a lot lower than the cost of boarding a second horse, the nurse mare, for half a year.
