Coyote Trapping - Colder Weather Part 2 - The Management Advantage

- The brutally cold weather presented many obstacles for Casey during his time spent trapping in Illinois. The biggest concern was how to cover the traps. In part 1, we showed you how to make wax dirt to eliminate the issue of traps getting frozen in the ground. The wax dirt is very powdery and a trapper must take extra effort to pack it on the trap. If a coyote steps on the set and feels movement beneath his foot he could back out and not engage the set. Placement of the trap is key to prevent the coyote from taking multiple steps around the set.
Locations are also vital to success. Changes in habitat, field lanes, or fence rows all present great funnel opportunities for trap locations. Often times these areas don't have a definitive spot for a trap, but rather a general area. These spots are great for multiple sets and relying on your lure to do the work for you. Locating these areas on an aerial photo can point you in the right direction as to where to place your sets. Traveling to these areas and seeing them for yourself will confirm what the aerial showed. Putting together all of these pieces to the puzzle can help you become a more successful trapper.

Keep the numbers of coyotes in check it’s important, for turkeys and deer and fawns will survive,
Another awesome video guys. It's not easy to educate on this subject without offending someone. You guys do it in a way that shows it's importance to any viewer. Great job. Thanks.
Thank you! That's exactly the way we want to portray it.
Great job guys and great video.
Get em !! 97 is crazy!! Love the show!
97 coyotes is an insane amount. That is awesome. Congrats. Your deer herd is going to benefit tremendously.

I stumbled on to your videos by searching "dirt hole sets for coyotes", and im glad i did. Your channel is the only one ive ever subscribed to,
New to trapping, what's your go to bait/gland/ urine combo?
Great vid guys
whats your most commanly used bait an lure on a normal trapping day?
great videos. I started trapping coyotes with snares as a necessity because they began killing new calves. I later learned how heavy they weighed in on the deer population. now its in my blood and love trapping. thanks for the education, going to start foot hold trapping soon
Is there a reason other than improper bedding/packing that would cause them to uncover a set? Had three pulled up last night without even setting it off. Pulled em up pushed em aside and dug the bait out
padriac mccoy Bedding/packing is probably your #1 culprit, but could also be scent on the trap itself. Give them a good boil and clean and that could fix the issue.
I think it was a bedding issue. Caught one this morning in a trap that had previously been pulled. Any tips on keeping from catching foxes? They been in my traps more than yotes
Super late reply but Im gonna say pan tension...they eat the same stuff mostly but maybe there is a marking scent foxes will stay away from.
Thanks for sharing, great stuff.
Another great video
Awesome!!!i have been waiting so long for this episode:) trapping is awesome and just got my first coyote yesterday in a dirt hole set.
Keep up
tanks video
I have watched numerous trapping videos from you and others, what if the area your trapping don't have fences and field edges . I can find sign all over the place rabbits all over the place but, I have yet to connect on coyotes . what are key things to look for in the desert
Nice!
Such great quality. You're making the rest of youtube nervous!
Damn, that's awesome love watching, soon it will be time to get em again.
You guys have great videos thanks for the info :)
Love the song at the end of these videos as well
5:50 is talking about the coyote uncovering the trap?
Urban Hunterz Yes he is...."scientist with a toothbrush!"
ManagementAdvantage
Out of curiosity or what? Love your series!
Urban Hunterz Yes curiosity from the bait. They'll pick a set apart and not get caught if it is not properly setup. Thanks for watching!
Awsome video im 14 and still lookin for my first coyote
Excellent video. Used to trap in high school in the early 80's, back at it again. Coyotes are killing lots of deer and attacking and killing farm animals. People know I trap, and ask me to come trap their property because their are afraid for their stock and house pets. Great and informative video.
Thanks for watching!
When you catch a coyote? Do you change the trap to a new one to remain scent less?
Watching your program helped me learn to trap as a result check out my picture of my first catch. Flat hole set MB 550.
This is an awesome video as usual! I have to congratulate you, 97 is a really good number for a dirt hole trapper from the states. I've witnessed half your catch in 1 day (49 coyotes and 6 fox) but not a record (biggest I know of is 55 coyotes and 5 fox in 1 day). Too bad the fur price will dip down so badly this year. Put a video up of all the pelts!
97 coyotes in 15 days is incredible! How many traps were you running during that 15 days?
how did you guys get into deer management?
Drake Ulven We range from those with wildlife biology degrees all the way to everyday joes who have learned through trial/error and The QDMA.
What type of gloves do you have and were can I get them
They're insulated and rubber coated to cut down on scent. Lowes or Home Depot should have them.
Good trapping job!
What Audio track did you use? Great video as always!
Well made
What bait and lure were you using. Great videos by the way.
Aonde q vende essas armadilhas
you should come to TN you can trap yotes all year long down here
theres also no bag limit
Curious. What on earth do you do with all the meat? Coyote doesn't really taste super good, but I suppose you could get used to it. Do you give the meat to the dogs or do you keep it yourself?
First Last
I think it's more likely they either give it to dogs or dispose of it in the woods somewhere.
awesome stuff, would love to do this. shame i live in the fucked up uk.
WOW ! what I would give to get rid of 97 coyotes in my area !
What do you do with all those coyotes, do you use there fur and eat there meat?
Anthony Mannarino Their furs are sold.
Hey I was wondering what lure and urine would you recommend me using to catch coyotes? But if you can tell me a few because I need to check if they are on Amazon or not. Thanks for the videos ! Keep them coming ! I subscribed!
TheWoodland Trapper Look around on here and you'll find plenty to choose from. www.minntrapprod.com
Good job on taking them out. I do have to disagree with you on one thing tho.. You said you won't be able to get the numbers you're looking for with peat or anything else. Why can't you when other people can do it?
like i said in the video you can still catch coyotes using other freeze proofing methods.....you will just have alot more dig outs and misses with peat...salt attracts rabbits and deer to the set and glycol has a tendency to wash away if it rains or thaws. I have tried them all and i just want to educate people on the best solutions to have a successful trapping season!
You prefer wax dirt. fine. don't sit there and blow smoke at everybody saying you can't catch "the numbers" with peat moss, etc because that's just ignorant horse crap and very amateurish to claim.
please come to my place, we are overrun!
Coyotes aren't invasive but they are annoying
Coyotes are not invasive.
