    ▬ About MDT ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
    MDT was born out of a single purpose: to provide better value and better accuracy for precision rifles. The first MDT chassis was developed from the ground up based on the needs of shooters.
    Our engineers verified every function and feature based on the input from competitive shooters. The end result was a game-changing product called the TAC21 that continues to perform at the range, in the field and in competitions around the world.
    Today, MDT chassis, magazines and accessories are still developed the same way.
    We collaborate, question and verify our concepts with precision shooters from around the globe to ensure that every MDT product is designed with the same single purpose: to provide our customers with the absolute best product possible.

    I love how MDT goes out and demonstrates different phenomena that we hear about, but they show in real time to drive the point home. Scientific method at play!

    You guys test what I always wanted to know but never had the time or money to test. Nobody else does this and I so don't understand why. Thank you very much for that! 🥳
    If I ever get to build a long range rig it will definitely base on stuff from MDT. 🥰

    Way back when I had an issue with screws from a picatinny rail section touching the bottom of my barrel, but only after everything was hot. I always attributed the point of impact shift to the heat until I finally got around to swapping barrels, saw the wear mark and made the connection.

    A barrel does not need to be free-floating to be accurate. A barrel needs to be free floating to be consistent.

    In the same type of error, what i see a lot is people who hold their rifle with their thumb that touches or covering the barrel. I tell them to be careful but often people don't listen.
    It would be interesting to see what this could give on target

    Would barrel whip be reduced if the barrel was solidly secured to the foregrip as Master Gunsmith George Banke demonstrated using his ULR rifles stocks several years back???

    How much clearance does a regular barrel in .308 / 6.5 Creedmoor need in order to be considered "free floated"? The chassis generally have plenty, of room, but some stock foreends only have a couple of hundredths of an inch clearance. Does the barrel move that much? Some say that if a sheet of paper can be passed between the barrel and the stock, it's actually enough 🤔

  • @andrebosgraaf2086
    @andrebosgraaf2086 2 місяці тому +1

    Thats why mdt should make a longer stock, so you never touch with your barrel a barricade.

    I love that MDT generally does practical tests. BUT, this one is the worst, they almost disprove that they are claiming. Of course when he wedges a casing between the barrel and chassis the POI will move, but then he says at least three times, that 'its still grouping well,' which indicates that if the lack of clearance is consistent(think a permanent part of the stock or chassis), the POI will likely be as well. A better test would be to shoot the rifle and get a 5 or 10 round group, then remove the action, add something solid between the chassis forend, replace the action, and shoot another group. The change in POI is irrelevant, the SIZE of the group is what would matter. Great company, GENERALLY great videos, this one lowers the bar in a very disappointing way.

      I agree 100%
      As long as the barrel is loaded with consistent pressure. It will shoot consistently.

  • @daporter84
    @daporter84 2 місяці тому +1

    Free floating the better helps but as you saw it still breaks a good group while touching so long as it's consistent and you zero for the Shift you'll still get good groups

    • @mitchstilborn
      @mitchstilborn 2 місяці тому +1

      Not quite, depends. Barrel contact might group decent for a but, but if you’re shooting more as the barrel heats up the POI shifts along with it. Shots stringing is a classic indicator of a barrel that isn’t floated

    What was the target distance used for this test? Nice to have this test!

  • @benoswald9431

    Was hoping to see that anything touching the barrel would open up groups. That would reinforce the importance of a free floated barrel. The take away from this test seems to be you will need a different zero for free floated compared to something touching barrel but group sizes stayed the same. Or maybe i missed something?

    Would like an investigation into pushing down on barrel when rifle is on a bag, like when shooting from a cattle gate. Also when pushing down on scope bell into the bag.

    That's crazy. The barrel must be slightly flexed with respect to the receiver.

  • @alexholland3811

    This is one video that I think missed the mark. Of course if you sight in your rifle...and then bend the barrel offline by touching something, the POI will change. How could it not because you have just changed the aim of the barrel. This is different than a gun that is fully touching and then sighted in. Some guns shoot great that way and most do not. The only question is what affect a gun has that is touching something like a bean bag, fence or other object accidentally and how much does that change the POI. It is not really wrong to show it the way you did, but I think it would have been more practicle to shoot normally and then shoot with the same gun's barrel resting on a fence, or against a tree limb and show those affects.

    30 years ago I read of one or two legendary gun writers in shooting publications say that for very heavy barrels of around an inch or more in diameter they preferred the first two or three inches under the barrel to be bedded in order to stop barrel droop. However looking at a lot of rifles with heavy barrels in chassis used in shooting matches like PRS that are fully free floated i guess that heavy barrels don’t need any bedding under the first few inches.

    • @MDTTAC

    It shifted because you WEDGED it in there. Of course it will push the POI up like that. Duh... It depends on the rifle. I've seen some rifle that ARE free floated that were terrible, and when you bed the barrel it shoots a much better group. Some rifle/stock combos are just that way.

    Guys, this was great, but please test the situation where the barrel just TOUCHES something - It is not pressed and shifted, but it is just TOUCHING wood or something else, to see if the change of harmony will affect the shift of POI. Thank you.
