Y'all are having too much fun. The size attained by my soil cube grown turmeric this summer is remarkable but now I'm scared to harvest. Thanks for preparing me ...next year my turmeric growing medium is going to be coir.

Impressive harvest! I'll have to try growing these rhizomes next spring. Hori hori knife is my favorite garden tool, so useful for so many tasks.

Look up how to dehydrate it to make tea. I drink a ginger turmeric tea that is so good and healthy! I’ll definitely be growing these next season

The new growth “young” ginger is a delicacy in Asian cuisine. Makes an easy sauce of julienne ginger (matchsticks) and soy sauce. Or see if an Asian market will buy it from you?

I had a friend give me some turmeric because she liked the flowers. She told me to plant it at the edge of my pond. I am in Thomasville ,Georgia zone 9a. Mine is planted in the ground and comes back every year. Not sure if it would for you. I also have tons of ginger that keeps spreading. It smells amazing when it blooms.

Tip: ginger freezes just great, for a long time! Easier to grate that way, too. But ya, that’s a lot of ginger 😂. Would it be easier to separate those roots with a strong blast from a hose? In the pot, out of the pot? Justathot….

That's amazing I'm planning on doing ginger and tumeric next season! Did you sprout them before you planted?

Yes I actually bought these rhizomes last fall, planted them and stashed them under the house all winter. I don’t think that’s necessary. I think planting in March/ April would work better.

Bought some turmeric rhizomes from from Aldis. Look healthy but wont sprout. Did this last summer . Friend said they were likely treated with growth retardent.

Hmmm I don’t think that’s fully accurate. Growth doesn’t last exponentially. It took a few months to get these growing: ua-cam.com/video/KWGjKgL5DX0/v-deo.htmlsi=UxclcmVqvpq6StY8

A few years ago I planted some ginger that was sprouting in a pot indoors. The foliage was beautiful, so naturally my cats had to play with it and the stem broke at the soil surface. I ended up leaving it in the pot and that Christmas morning there was a new shoot. Hadn't watered it in months 😂

Yup - grocery stores often sell ginger with retardant sprayed on them. Maybe try scrubbing it off? Otherwise just buy organic roots and try again. Organic is supposed to be free of those sprays and I have had great luck with those whether from the local store or Asian market. Mine grows perpetually indoors or seasonally outdoors.

I love your turmeric and ginger. You can go into business, on those two crops. I use ginger a bit but you’re is too much even for me. Re turmeric powder, use it as much as you can. We use it in Indian food a lot. But even fro me, that’s a lot!
