  • The Pokémon company has now decided to essentially erase the term starter Pokémon and replace it with the term first partner Pokémon. A lot of Pokémon fans don't like this change at all because starter Pokémon is such an iconic term for many fans.

    I've only ever used the term "First Partner Pokemon" to refer to my first starter(s), ever. I can't remember if I played XD Gale of Darkness or Pokemon Emerald first, but I often consider Treecko, Eevee, and Spheal to be my "First Partner Pokemon". Eevee Because you start with it in XD, Treecko because it was my choice in Emerald, and Spheal because it was my first Shadow Pokemon that fought alongside Eevee in my XD run.
    Eevee, Walrein, and Grovyle are still some of my favorites to this day. (I never evolved my Grovyle b/c I thought Sceptile was ugly as a kid. I was so excited to get Treecko in Explorers and at first I thought Grovyle was always the second stage of your own Pokemon until my second playthrough where I realized Grovyle is ALWAYS Grovyle and got really excited, lol. )
    So, yeah. I am definitely not referring to all starter Pokemon as my "First Partner Pokemon." That's only true for my firsts, and for other people's firsts. "Starters" will always be a term especially because of the anime. Ash gets his hand on starters every region he goes to, Pikachu is his first partner Pokemon, and if they want to market with the anime, they should use the applicable terms.
    As much as I love mons like Rowlet and Sprigatito, they'll never be my "First Partner Pokemon".

      The japanese term might have originated from fans too, cause I've seen old material that refer to them as pokémon with a "special coloration", but it could just translation issues.

    It's also interesting with this context as in Generations 1-6 (plus Legends) we receive our Starter Pokemon from the region's Pokemon Professor. However in Generations 7-9, we no longer get our Starter Pokemon from the professors anymore. Generation 7 we get our Alolan Starters from Hala the Island King Kahuna (not counting USUM as people say to count that as a remake (like Platinum & etc.) that follows the same plot as SM), Generation 8 we get our Galar Starters from Leon, & Generation 9 we get our Paldean Starters from Principal Director Clavell

  • @cinnasauria
    @cinnasauria 28 днів тому +2

    They're really not changing anything, though. Starter was always more of a colloquial term and TPC has called them your first partner even in-game for almost a decade now. I know it seems strange because they've officially acknowledged and canonized other popular fanon terms like Shiny, but this has nothing to do with what we're supposed to call them. It's entirely about official communication and the brand's own clarity of messaging. Bulbapedia only formalized the title change after a lot of back-and-forth discussion, which you can still see on the talk page for first partner Pokemon. (And yeah, substituting terminology without adjusting more of the actual article did introduce some logical weirdness.)
    Bonding with a partner Pokemon is a core theme of the series and its marketing, and that's the role the starters are designed to reflect in the story. They are inviting you to be the Ash to their Pikachu. Not every starter trio was actually intended by the professor to be handed out to new trainers, sometimes it's just a locally rare Pokemon you're entrusted with because it likes you. Lore-wise, Starter is not a meaningfully separate category, that's purely meta. Circumstance and regional customs vary. Pokemon is an RPG series, so the branding tries to acknowledge the player as part of the world.
    Even in terms of gameplay, I actually think it makes sense to avoid connotations that could potentially mislead newer, younger players. The word "starter" in general often implies that you'll need to upgrade or replace something later on, but this is not true of starter Pokemon. They're actually some of the strongest, even competitively. They're designed to be reliable through the whole game. Their strength reflects the player's progress. Again, this is all just what the company wants to communicate about their brand, and they want to emphasize the roleplaying perspective.
    We don't all care to engage with the narrative that way, we just use the mons we wanna use, and we might have our own ideas about the character we're playing. That's all fine and none of it contradicts. Of course everyone's gonna keep calling 'em starters anyway. I'm almost certain we'd be calling them starters even if they were officially First Partners the whole time.

    4:51 I can not agree with this criteria. Pikachu in Pokemon Yellow and Let's Go Pikachu is a starter of a species that can be found in the wild, same goes for Eevee in Let's Go Eevee. Sure the Pikachu and Eevee in Let's Go are specifically called "Partner Pikachu" and "Partner Eevee" but the Pikachu in Pokemon Yellow doesn't share this distinction. Also Ash's pikachu is a starter and every starter pokemon in the anime can be found in the wild too. Ash specifically catches at least one wild starter per region. Oh and every Hisui starter can be found in space-time anomalies, which qualifies as "the wild" .

"First" means that it was your first Pokémon you got, not the first Pokémon in your team. Only NPCs can get Ratatas as their first Pokémon, so for them, Ratata is their starter/first partner Pokémon. Starter was never an exlusive name for the classical grass/fire/water trio, its a name for the very first Pokémon someone gets. "Starter" is just a term that was born as a name for the first Pokémon someone gets. It was never meant as an exclusive name for the classical grass/fire/water trio. People recently just mistakenly interpet it as a exlusive name for the trios because starter is mainly used for them, but thats only because the trio are always the first Pokémon in all the games with a few exceptions (Lets go), so we naturally only call the trio "starters" because those are the only Pokémon avaiable to us as our first Pokémons. We don't call ratata or others a starter Pokémon because there is no game where ratata is the very first Pokémon we get. We players can never have ratata as a starter Pokémon, but for an NPC who got ratata as his first, that ratata is his starter Pokémon.

Also the lack of a 大 great kanji makes Bulbapedia's use of "Big" in the translation nonsensical and I think they may have confused the 天 heaven kanji for it. "Elite Four" is technically correct as it means "the four most superior individuals within a group or field" but not "Big Four." The Big Five in Yugioh by contrast uses kana to phonetically spell "big" as close as possible and a number 5, thus avoiding this outright. Also Bulbapedia's translation for "Big Three" is correct, even though the choice of kanji seems nonsensical... )
