- In this episode we check out the ultimate beach cruiser, our Tesla powered 1974 Volkswagen Thing. On this build we developed a bolt-in rear subframe for a small rear Tesla Model S motor. Check out the build and let us know what you want to see converted in the comments.

@@robertamoyaw1979 Tesla small drive unit about $10,000, add batteries &26,000, some odds and ends $4,000. It weighs about 300 pounds more than the original curb weight. I have now idea of the top speed but it gets sketchy about 75 mph.

I've loved VW Things since I first saw one in the 80s. Amazing conversion.
This was not easy to get through; the guy has more than just a few screws loose, but it was worth it to see the car. “The Thing” is not a very structurally sound vehicle (read that as four-wheeled death trap if you hit anything bigger than a butterfly while driving it). Even so, this would be my daughter’s dream car and I’m sure she’d like it even more with the conversion to an EV.
Please do a build video on this type of conversion. Also, it would be great if you made this a kit like the other VW conversion kits (sans drive unit and batteries, but with all the other parts needed).

The small drive unit is from the front of the model S? You don’t have those on your parts list, axles? He needs less coffee.
No, the small Tesla drive unit is from the rear of the less powerful S models. A front drive is a whole different drive unit.

What does the drive unit output and how much power do you get at the wheel?
Is it a single gear transmission for drive?
Yes, I'd like to hear see the specs too. Cool conversion but what sort of power, weight, and range do you get from it?
@@danbradley7176 About 250 hp, just like in the Tesla. We are testing the range and hoping for 100-120 miles per charge. We used the complete small Tesla drive unit and it has a single speed transmission. The Thing now weighs 300 pounds more the original curb weight.

Spicer clearly watched too many Pee Wee Herman videos while on magic mushrooms. While he was still in elementary school. And he was the only kid in elementary who wore a Grateful Dead Tshirt because he had been to their concerts and listened to all their albums. First class conversion as always. Keep up the great work!

Oh my God find a Nissan cube...... And fricken convert it. Please if you find any sign cube I would love to see a video of you guys converting it and then doing a clean burnout with it as an all wheel drive beast with at least 50 mi of range
And when you do this can you please do a tutorial on the cooling system because if it's not air-cooled I would love to know how you did it. And how the cooling system works
@@hybridstoatdragon a Nissan Cube is too new for EV West to be interested in converting. The cooling system is built out of Tesla coolant pumps and a motorcycle radiator.

Interesting video but the high energy presentation made it hard to glean the relevant data. I got that the conversion uses a small Tesla drive unit and about 12 Tesla Smart Car battery modules (I think) but I would have liked to know about the controller.
