Thanks for sharing this trip. Shellcrackers are so much fun and great eating. Your comment about no one at home is heart rendering to me. I am yet fortunate that my wife enjoys us fishing together. And that we are yet healthy to be able to do so.
Saw my boat go by. Appreciate your teachings. Most guides just catch and don't tell us what they are thinking. Caught some crackers a few days before this episode they were in 12 ft.
Thank you to the old fisherman... I found your channel because Richard said to go watch your channel. you're doing the kind of videos I wish he would do, fishing in real time no.. editing!! Thank you Thank you,,
OH we call ours Spotted Perch & boy I would honestly give anything to taste them again. We used to catch them in a place called Poona Creek - it is adjacent to Fraser Island & just the most beautiful water you have ever seen, plenty of deep holes. I used to make a whole lot of rigs up the night before in case we got bit off or they swallowed the hook- I hated wasting fishing time. Cheers Denise- Australia
Ky. Lake here caught limit of 20 shellcrackers today all over 10 inches 8 or 9 over 12 inches. Want to tell ya I use 1/16th jig head with piece a worm just a piece and it helps to keep em from swallowing it. What's he say? Go fishing when ya can cuz it's good fer ya!!!! Hey buddy. My favourite fish is shell crackers too. And yellow perch. Crappy are good but a little mushy. Shell crackers are more firm. And better flavor.
This is soooo funny Steve because my grandson Payten has earned the fishing moniker “Turtleman”! I have been fishing over fifty years and I have never caught a turtle fishing. Payten has now caught 3! I can’t wait to tell Payten he has a new brother now! 😂😂😂
Them blue gill hard to beat my favorite that ive ever caught is a yellow perch we have a clear lake here in alabama that has a few in it that I fish.... man they are good!!..... enjoyed it old fisherman.👍
We love all manner of flatfish and crappie. Redbreast is the prize. Shellcrackers fight hard but are not the top of our food list. In se NC "crackers have a slight muddy flavor to me.
I’ve got that same 6’9” st. Croix panfish ultralight rod but it has a little different handle style being a couple years older than yours. I had that one you’re fishing with in this video in my hand the other day at a sporting goods store and I was sooo tempted, but I couldn’t justify another $130 or so for the same rod I have with just a different handle. Regardless, I absolutely love that rod! Your crappies put a little more bend in the rod than my Wisconsin crappies though.
Steve when it comes to big shell crackers ,,you are right , they are the best tasting fish out there ,,but also never fish behind the guy who catches em and don’t put em back ,,they don’t replenish like some of the other fish.
Okay, so we have shell crackers, slab crackers, crackers to the east, crackers to the west brush pile crackers....small crackers. Respectfully, how in the world did the bluegill get the name shell cracker?
I really like you video's, thank you for sharing them, keep them coming. I want to ask you what model Garmin Live Scope Fish Finder and transducer do you have on your red boat?
Just a different perspective on how UA-cam videos can be useful. I am a zoologist and a marine and aquatic biologist. This video got me thinking, and maybe a kid wanna-be biologist could use this simple project. Kids need projects to submit, or Science Fair displays. The Bluegill is Lepomis macrochirus, basically, the big eared perch that has some blue on it. Personally, I don't go deep on fish, especially freshwater fish. But I can't do a simple Google search on microlophus, the Shellcracker. Or Lophus, we all know what micro means. Where did that name come from? I am guessing it will translate into something like tiny teeth, if the kid can dig in a library through printed material...great project for a dad or grandad to offer up to a kid that is sciency and needs encouragement. Or moms, grandmoms, it's just mostly guys that don't know what to suggest. For myself, I don't really study fish, at all. They are vertebrates. You can study their behavior, but they all have left and right sides, one heart, mostly the same digestive systems. But this one may be different in an interesting way. A kid needs to do the etymology (origin of the word),of microlophus, to figure out what the person that named this meant. I see this particular species spread all across the south, haven't heard about the north, don't think so. I think dozens of kids could use this as a project all across the US, in the south. As a biology snob, I have always put all Lepomis on the same stringer. But this video made me check. There's a reason microlophus is called Shellcracker, by many.. The kid would have to search dusty libraries, likely, to do the word-origin/etymology thing, which I am not going to do in my rural area with nothing libraries. I bet I can guess, that lophus refers to some kind of tiny tooth in their throats. I suppose I could have more guesses, I am just posting this comment to give dads and grandads a suggestion, for that kid. There is one answer, but thousands of kids can try this, it's not a race. The internet is so devoid of real science, this is the goal of science education. Not to teach kids what to think, but to teach them how to learn for themselves. You all know that special kid with a head, lost in the clouds. Most of those kids could probably benefit from spending time in real libraries. When you are dealing with kids that have their heads in the clouds, it is good for them to be near dictionaries, 8 inches thick, with original words and definitions. The internet changes every day. If any kids need help, within reason, I will try to help. But the challenge is to go figure out the name for me, and catch a Shellcracker and tell us the morphology. Peace
Your shellcracker trips go like mine..I use eagle claw number 4 Aberdeen hooks for shellcrackers. I took my friend to my honey hole he managed to catch a 6lb bass on the same setup ultra light rod 6lb line 1 splitshot number 4 Aberdeen hook. I posted the video. You should check it out🤟❤😎

Because it's not a bluegill.
