WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

This guy loves his bible so much he doesn't want to smudge the pages by reading it. Typical christian.
They just worship a book, not a god. I've seen so many Xtians curse god without any problems, but as soon as someone says something bad about the Bible, they go nuts.
Fuck me that’s funny.
😂😂😂
Christianity and Islam stupidity beyond the talking donkeys' Imagination!!! 😂😂😂☪✝✡
If you read the fine print, christians don’t need to read or know the bible. They just need to believe it.🤤
Nothing twists a person's mind up like religion.
Good people do good things; bad people do bad things; religion makes good people do bad things.
@@bradmonson265 It certainly does. Sometimes it leads us to abuse ourselves. Aside from the global and political horrors of religion, the one thing that infuriates me as much as pedophile priests is indoctrinating children with religious faith. It is child abuse. I can explain the neuroscience behind that statement if necessary.
@@jameshicks7125 I absolutely agree. I see it happening all around me.
For thousands of years, religion has persisted to be the main form of insanity which necessitates wars, disparity and even crimes against humanity.

Think of owning a dog. Dogs are a great example because they can learn commands, are empathetic, and display that they know right from wrong behavior. If a dog chewed up your couch and displayed behavior showing he knew he was guilty, would you put him in the basement, beat him constantly, starve him, and do this daily forever? I don't think so. Most people think of their pets as part of the family and would do almost anything to keep them safe, happy and healthy. Yet a God who supposedly made us and loves us would do this as a matter of everyday events for things that are inconsequential to him, you or the world at large.
It gets way worse once you consider the flood.
love how Matt puts john in his Logic blender
I do to, but let's face it. It wasn't that hard
And I LOVE watching a Christian getting puréed. Nothing is more satisfying that a liquified Christian.
Matt " Osterizer" Dilahunty
Religion ... because thinking is hard
Life is scary and sucks more when one clings to an unknowable deity. Courage is a required to face the truth.
This is a perfect example of a christian stuck between defending the indefensible (hell) and questioning the unquestionable (god).
As a young man of 13 years I watched my grandfather who was a catholic who attended church regularly throughout his life lie on his deathbed in absolute fear, convinced that he was going to hell. He was a good man who did not deserve to go through that suffering in his last days. We must, as Matt says here, let go of these religious constructs.
@Doctor Powers So, you admit you could get it wrong. So, what precautions have you taken due to this? Do you worship Osiris, Hades, Odin, Huitzilopoctli, and all the other gods humanity has worshipped over the millennia?
@Doctor Powers . The sum total of comments people have made about you would fill a book. They have described in great detail all the lies you’ve told about your origin, so-called qualifications etc. in comment threads everywhere, you are the absolute laughing stock to all of us. You are regarded as the most pathetic of all multinamed trolls, who has never made it even one sensible argument. Don’t keep embarrassing yourself, give it a miss
@Doctor Powers Please define religion.
@Doctor Powers Hosea 13:16, "The people of Samaria must bear their guilt because they have rebelled against their god. Their LITTLE ONES WILL BE DASHED TO THE GROUND and their PREGNANT WOMEN WILL BE RIPPED OPEN!"
@Doctor Powers . You’re right, I can’t answer the questions you ask about evolution etc. however why don’t you give me in fine detail, an explanation of how to build a nuclear submarine? Why do you assume that we are all trained biologists? We simply do not believe in a god. End of story. People have spent all their working lives studying the questions you asked.
No doubt you will say you’ve read their findings. However that’s bullshit. You are so engrossed in in your fantasy tale that you wouldn’t let anything get in its way. At best you will have given a quick glance to evolutionary explanations. Even if you did study their findings in detail, you still wouldn’t believe them because you’re mind has been poisoned.
So give up on your moist rock garbage because you’re asking the wrong people. If you ever asked me about it in the future, I will say the same thing I’ve said here. Tell me how to build a nuclear submarine. Even if you could that would mean you are trained in such a field, which still doesn’t mean that we necessarily have expertise in science.
So for you to say that you have destroyed atheists over and over is so wrong and so absolutely childish given what I’ve been talking about above.
That’s the same as asking us for every little detail about the construction of a fridge. Most of us are not refrigeration mechanics, so why ask us? Let’s see if you’ve got the guts to ask you a question to the real people. I’m sure you’ll tell us you have, but as usual you will be lying.
You haven’t destroyed any atheists, and you never will.
This was one of Matt’s masterpieces! I’m going to keep watching this until I memorize it.

probably one of the best clips ever, the gymnastics the guy is will to go through to avoid admitting that his religion and his god are IMMORAL !
According to what objective standard?
@@walnutoil100 Prove that there is an "objective standard". You don't have to appeal to an "objective standard" to have an opinion on morality. From the humanist perspective, you can demonstrate the immorality of the Bible (especially when it advocates for throwing stones at a child's head until he bleeds out and dies for being "unruly", whatever that means.) If you don't care about humans, then that is a different story!
@Doctor Powers A. You haven't read the OT then. B. Muslims would disagree with your "the Bible is the objective standard" BS and say the Koran is. One of the best calls ever; Matt hit a zone during this call that was special; almost a perfect delivery, super quick, clear, and amazingly effective.
How did you measure the effect of his comments?
@@sarcastaball It's a subjective judgement; made super clear sense to me, therefore I labeled it effective. We all talk like this and most of us don't require a peer review paper to make subjective statements all day during our lives. "Mm that ice cream was good." " how did you determine it was good?" "I did a double blind taste test in a lab." Come on bud, I'm allowed to give my opinion and say Matt hit an awesome zone there that was effective, as judged by the effect it had on me.
We don't need a Concept of a God or religion to live in this world. When I die I'm ok not knowing what will happen.
Same as before you were born.
@@sabbe_satta_bhavantu_sukhi7226
God is man made and created for fear and control. All living things will die it doesn't make it any more special because of your beliefs.
@@sabbe_satta_bhavantu_sukhi7226 "You do realize that humanity formed complex civilizations and practices because of religion. "
You do realize that civilization began before religion? Complexity and practices are not inherent to religion.
"Science is also an extension of religion."
Science relies on empiricism and descriptivism. Religion relies on prescriptivism and doctrine. These things are diametrically opposed, what you're thinking of is metaphysics, something more akin to Aristotelian as opposed to Cartesian. '
"Religion/spirituality is intrinsic to our nature because humans are religious/spiritual abstract beings. "
We are not.
"“God” exists because we perceive ourselves to exist. "
Aristotelian method indeed.
@@sabbe_satta_bhavantu_sukhi7226 "Name one civilization that began and formed without religious practices. "
You said formed because of religious practices, not "with".
"Religion and science are both human tools that we use. "
I would argue that religion uses people like a tool, not the other way around. We don't "learn" anything through it.
"It takes a brave man to admit that humans aren’t abstract beings. Our consciousness is literally abstract. "
I'm pretty sure no one actually understands what an abstract being is, our thoughts are abstract however.
""“God” doesn’t need to be real to work."
The fear of one is sufficient.
" Bad religion can be good religion, just like good science can be bad science. "
Now you fucked up.
We can evaluate science through demonstration and empiricism to determine truth value. In science, either it's true, or it isn't.
Explain to me how we determine if religion is good or bad.
@@rageofheaven Guy sadly deleted his comments.
Anyway, I'd love to see someone define "bad science."
Because to me, there's just science and not science.
I love how John is absolutely certain that God has a moral code and John knows what that is and how to live up to it or not and precisely what happens if you do or don't. He called to assert all of this and expected it to be taken seriously but when the rubber hit the road it's "Well I know fuck all because only God knows". Comedy gold!
This video should be shown in every classroom
I love this rant so much ... I agree with everything Matt says but the best thing is "I rather worship Don!" 😄😆
Great work by Matt in this video, not letting Christians squirm out of the fact that the god they worship will banish people (even good people as this caller said) to hell to be eternally punished.
@@walnutoil100 "wrong" is subjective, but it certainly shoots holes in the argument that God is just and loving when he thinks eating shellfish is wrong but owning other humans as property is totally fine, and I deserve to be tortured for an eternity for the heinous crime of... not being in ideological lockstep. Believe whatever you want but don't be surprised when people laugh in your face when you try to claim the moral high ground.
@@walnutoil100 I said its subjective, I didn't say nobody can possibly have an informed opinion on particular topics. Yes, the god of the bible is an immoral thug based on the fact that he condones many things that I genuinely believe to be wrong (you know, like slavery, genocide, child sacrifice...). As a society we can work together to have objective measures of subjective things. There are people who may have no problem with murdering your neighbor to take his property, but as a society we've formed a consensus that that is wrong and someone who does that should face consequences. I'm gonna leave it at that since your first comment was a dog whistle and your second comment proved beyond any doubt that you're not trying to argue in good faith.
@@walnutoil100 that is such a dumb / dishonest argument and your gotcha comments are worthless.
Aztecs sacrificed humans, they didn't think it was wrong at the time. Slavery is acceptable in the bible as a fact of life. However, most human societies would consider all of that wrong in 2021.
Yes, zeitgeist can change over time - that doesn't mean all societal sense of morality is invalidated or cannot improve.
@@JJ_SDWR I couldn't have said it better.... Also I like the fact that you brought up the point that we as a society have to work to form a consensus on morality. This implies that we need to continue improving our sense of morality as a society. We have to stay vigilant considering the many past examples of moral failures.
@@walnutoil100 sounds like you are saying slavery is moral to you and your immoral god. Got it.

This video was so spot on! I loved how you use logic to tear his argument to pieces! I also get sick and tired of Christians saying that they are just worthless sinners and that they don't deserve God's love but Jesus made them worthy. Like you said it's the old "I'm nothing without Christ" BS.
The unsupported assertions this caller uses are breathtaking! Glad Matt came back at him with some sense. The caller's obviously not read his holy book!!! 😮

Awesome episode! Everyone should watch Matt’s rant here
One of the things I admire about religious folks is that they have the balls to defend a whole bunch of unsupported assertions with yet another bunch of unsupported assertions and somehow believe that this makes for a strong case.
The is the most appropriate video to start opening up the eyes of the believers. It's just perfect IF they actually have read the Bible
14 years ago!!! But what an awesome clip. Thanks, crew and crew cat. xxx
9:05 - WHY DO BELIEVERS bother using analogies when the bible CLEARLY spells out god's morality??? They really struggle with that truth.
Hard as this is to separate, can we pretend just for one moment that there is no bible and no god? So to the believers I say this. If you read a self help book by an author who genuinely believed he had a good explanation on how you should live your life, and he stated that you should follow all the same kind of things that the bible says, what would you say? If you have even an ounce of honesty, you would reject all of those shocking teachings if they came from anyone outside of the bible.
Yet you have been so hypnotised as to accept that a god exists who would tell you to do all those highly immoral things.
@Fay Spahmer . Very true Fay. That’s probably the bulk of them although I think there would be a substantial number who believe it for the sake of believing it, even without the eternal threat.
Was horrified to hear Richard Dawkins relating a conversation he had with a scientist who also happened to be a believer. He told Richard that even if religion was proven wrong beyond any argument, he would still be a believer. Dawkins said something like, “How can we deal with that sort of lack of intelligence?”
When Matt’s on a roll, he even shuts up his fellow co-host
The problem is that the bible say that we today are paying for the sins of adam and eve thousands of years ago. No matter how good of a person you are, you will go to hell unless you accept jesus as your savior based on what Adam and Eve did. That's why it is unbelievable.
Sin is bullshite, hell is bullshite, original sin even more bullshite..it’s all a bunch of religious concepts intended to answer religious questions and only believers worry about that nonsense.
@Doctor Powers
Are you claiming that IF you somehow do none of those sins, you go to heaven even without Jesus? That the inherented sin does not matter?
Because if not, you just proved his point.
@Doctor Powers
Then you failed to address his point. That his problem was that it did not matter what sins you did or didn't do, you'd go to hell for the original sin anyway.
He was right.
@Doctor Powers
You say 'wrong' but then go on to completely agree. Are you doing okay?
@Doctor Powers
The explanation you offered did not dispute the point. You just agreed that it was correct and elaborated a little.
Q: If you somehow live a sinless life, will you still go to hell?
A: Original Sin says yes.
Whatever explanation you think you have for this does not change the truth of the above, does it?
"Moral reality" Just a fuzzy term that gives enough wiggle room to tap-dance around.
Oh, my god!(?) One of Matt's best!
I absolutely love this rant! I need to have the transcript and translate it to French!
I was about to give up on this guy when Matt cut the connection. Not answering questions is a form of dishonesty but they are having to be dishonest with themselves as they can't truly answer questions and hold on to their "arguments".
@Christa Simon this is why he’s kinda less patient as time has gone by. When you ask for someone for their opinion/argument and you POINT OUT something fallacious but they still choose to cross their arms and not answer, it’s hard to sit still for it.
Matts 6 atheist sins needs to be used more and promoted.
1:Credulity, gulibility.
2:Voluntery wilful ignorance.
3:Letting fear prevent you from understanding reality.
4:Limiting the rights and freedoms of others in order to make them abide by your standards.
5:Sacrificing the mental emotional and physical wellbeing of a child in deference to your religion.
6:Wasting the one and only life your know your going to have worrying and working for an afterlife someone told you might be there.
Ask a Christian to give you three examples of how their belief in God has made them more moral than your average non-believer and they usually can't. What's worse is that no matter what example they try to give of their God given morality, it is breached by God himself somewhere in the Bible.
I love how theists call me immoral for being atheist, but I'm living my life the exact way as most of them, just living my life and minding my own business and not hurting anyone. How does that make me immoral? Just because I don't believe in the same thing as them. That's like saying you're immoral because you like jazz and I like pop so I'm moral and you're not.
Even if there was a god,I still wouldn’t bow to him, he couldn’t face me because of his shame!
Now, this is my favorite from Matt.

This is the really sad thing about the impact of religion. I know it doesn't apply to everyone but it gets people so enamored with this idea of unquestionable obedience that they become completely devoid of critical thinking and independence. It's so fucking sad.
One of the best interactions/call. Thanks.
They should give each caller that says "the atheist experience...I wasn't ready"
What's amazing is that Matt, a highly intelligent person, bought into this insanity at one time and contemplated going into the ministry to teach it.

One of the great Matt Rants
Absolutely brilliant response from Matt
If you want me to believe in something, you have to make a convincing argument within 30 seconds.
Johns first 30 seconds involved me being whisked away to a magic land, getting judged by an eternal being and that there is no-immoral act in murdering somebody.
This is what he said within the first 30 seconds.
How in the name of christ am i supposed to Believe that?
Imagine pitching this concept to an alien who has never heard of god before. That's how you should approach all things in life.
He sounds bonkers.
God is the ultimate scapegoat. Don't to religions, kids, not even once.
I just realised that the Christian god being schizophrenic would explain a lot of the inconsistencies in the bible like the sacrificing of himself to himself through a loophole in the laws he created to forgive us for being the way he made us.
Being jesus and god while communicating with one another is something that doesn't seem like something a being with one personality could do in a sane fashion, neither is the holy trinity.
After all no sane person would ever claim to be perfect.
I consider this the birth of Matt Dillahunty as we know him. This clip contains everything you need - you can basically skip every other AXP video.
