After that modulation on the last verse this song is SO freaking high, and Joel's all over it! He has such excellent timbre and complete control you don't even notice what an incredibly high voice he has. BTW, the music to the chorus was written by Beethoven, who gets a credit on the album. the original version was Karl Haas's theme for "Adventures in Fine Music."
Billy Joel is an absolute legend, but let's not overlook his band, who, to a man and woman, are absolutely perfect in everything they do. Hats off to them all.
No he isn’t underrated. No he isn’t underestimated. The guy is and always has been highly revered and is a true legend. This song is my absolute favourite of his and he sings it so perfectly. God bless Billy Joel.
Are you nuts? Billy Joel is far from underrated, he is respected by his peers and loved fiercely by his fans who never strayed from him...You need to do some reading on Mr. Joel. You just don’t sell out Madison Square Garden whenever you feel like it. Only Billy Joel can do that. He will be remembered as a music legend.
Some musical trivia - the theme from the chorus; ("this night is mine - it's only you and I - tomorrow is a long time away - this night can last forever") is taken from Beethoven's Sonata No. 8 Pathetique 2nd movement Op 13. He credits lovely Ludwig in the album notes. It's really a beautiful melody and I think Billy has done it justice with a successful borrow from an obviously inspiring composition.
In as far as the entire Innocent Man album was a nod to '50s and '60s songs, his use of a classical melody is (sort of) obviously an homage to "Lovers' Concerto" by The Toys (1965), which was basically a Bach minuet.
My fiancee and I first heard this song in concert at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto on Dec 11 1986. It was the last song of the show and we both immediately said this was to be our wedding song. It was beautiful and we both still love it 22 years later!! Thanks for sharing.
Absolutely! The song is already up there pretty good on, "It's only YOU AND I..." but that modulation in the last verse goes from F to Bb!! Try and sing along with that!
Incredible song, by an incredible musician. I know he is appreciated, but it won't be until he is gone that people realize he is one of the greatest songwriters of his generation. Thanks for this great video.
A man with his talent must have that much musical creativity going round in his brain yet he has refused to record any new material for over twenty years, that is very very sad IMO, thanks for watching.
Amazing stuff. What an absolutely cracking song. Highly underestimated artist. So much depth and feeling in these lyrics too. This has to be one of my all time favourite Billy Joel songs.
Are you nuts! Billy Joel is far from underrated, he is respected by his peers and loved fiercely by his fans who never strayed from him...You need to do some reading on Mr. Joel. You just don’t get to play and sell out Madison Square Garden whenever you feel like it night after night. Only Billy Joel can do that. He will be remembered as a music legend and one of the greatest singers of our lifetime. #QUARANTINE2021
🌸 "This Night" Didn't I say I wasn't ready for a romance Didn't we promise We would only be friends And so we danced Though it was only a slow dance I started breaking my promises Right there and then Didn't I swear There would be no complications Didn't you want Someone who's seen it all before Now that you're here It's not the same situation Suddenly I don't remember the rules anymore This night is mine It's only you and I Tomorrow Is a long time away This night can last forever I've been around Someone like me should know better Falling in love Would be the worst thing I could do Didn't I say I needed time to forget her Aren't you running from someone Who's not over you How many nights Have I been lonely without you I tell myself How much I really don't care How many nights Have I been thinking about you Wanting to hold you But knowing you would not be there This night You're mine It's only you and I I'll tell you To forget yesterday This night we are together This night Is mine It's only you and I Tomorrow Is such a long time away This night can last forever Tomorrow Is such a long time away This night can last forever
I saw him perform at the long gone Cap Center in Landover, Maryland October 10, 1986 14th row (floor seat) and he ended that show with this song. Incredible!!
As an aspiring musician this song is a favorite of mine as I was in high school when the Innocent Man album ws released. As I grow as amusician I plan on doing a version of this great song myself one day soon. Thank you for posting it.
Billy is just breathtaking. He talks about how he feels like women always took advantage of him for his money, and he is finally married to someone for what he believes is true love. I don't know the details of his personal life, but I can only imagine what it must like to be so talented that you never know if you can trust people to want to be with you for who you are or what you have become.
@hollpollFunny you should find this on an old video - I kept this on video for 23 years, even several years without having a video recorder. Tragically when I moved in with my now wife she accidently chucked it out!! Still devastated and have looked all over for a copy since. Not even a big Billy fan but this particular concert just captured him and his band at a the peak moment and in inspiring form.
Billy was thinking in the mode of the 60's song "Lover's Concerto", which is based on a Bach Minuet. Since someone already copped a Bach melody, Billy figured he'd cop a Beethoven melody (and a very beautiful one at that!) The whole "Innocent Man" album is based on his favorite Motown and Stax albums from the 1960's.
Brilliant and great harmonies too. I'm watching this (and the others) over and over. Still can't find anyone with the dvd tho unfortunately ... yet. ;)
ビリー・ジョエル、最高😃⤴️⤴️
今から約30年前頃かなぁ。。。神戸にビリーが来日したときに
コンサートに行ったこと、ビリーのステージでの歌声、楽しいパフォーマンスが忘れられません‼️
This night 🎵は 中でも大好き🍀😌🍀
Thank You🎵
Nobody mentioned how awesome the Backup Vocal harmonies were?? WOW!

Very well said and I totally agree
Giusto ... Per PianoMan la musica un gioco facile
Billy Joel and Ludwig van Beethoven. What a combination! Who could ask for more? Terrific stuff.
I was There remember it very well
Doesn't get better than this. The music mould was shattered to bits when they made Billy Joel.
What a performance, my gosh. Billy Joel will always be criminally underrated.
SCharlesDennicon he’s never been underrated by anyone.
Roberto Moi oh yeah he has!!

Underrated? I didn’t know that a Legend (Mr. Joel) can be considered underrated 🤔🤨🧐.
@@ms25risa4 In many European countries like mine (France), he is. :)
His Album "An Innocent Man" 1983 is one of my favourite albums of all time x
He credited Beethoven on the album notes btw.
The little thumbs up at the end,he knew he nailed this song, fabulous artist
Fantastic song, amazing backing vocals. Love how he says situa-tion ❤
That's the old doo-wop coming through.
I was there that night on the left hand side and quite near the front (Earl's Court, if memory serves me well). It was a fantastic evening!
This was my wedding song, there will never be anyone as cool as Billy Joel

One of my favourite classical pieces.
He gave 110% to sing this song

Billy Joel's music brings back memories that you could only find in heaven yet his music brought heaven to earth and there is plenty of it
For some reason this song always sends shivers down my spine. Wonder why, well it must be because it's one hell of a great song! :-)
I was sent here after listening to Beethoven’s Pathetique! Glad I did.
Thx
"I believe this is the best live version"
I agree!
I agree
Billy Joel is so sweet. I wish him the best, he earned it.
Love him!! My fave male artist!!
The vocal end of the song shows how great Billy was, not only as a piano player, but as a singer. The ending just blows me away!
Absolutely! The song is already up there pretty good on, "It's only YOU AND I..." but that modulation in the last verse goes from F to Bb!! Try and sing along with that!
Not only is this the best live performance of This Night, it's the best Billy Joel song ever. Thanks very much for posting.
Nailed it! One of the tightest live performances I have ever seen!
Un fenomeno!!❤❤❤
Billy was on fire that night! How I'd love to get my hands on a copy of this show!
Billy ... Il migliore in ogni tipo di musica !!! Talento eclettico !!!!

No... You are not alone. There are a lot of us out here. Keep the faith! 🎹
And now that faith has been rewarded! 🎶🎵🎶
Amazing stuff. What an absolutely cracking song. Highly underestimated artist.
So much depth and feeling in these lyrics too. This has to be one of my all time favourite Billy Joel songs.
I love this song. Its got that oldies-style sound. This and "Longest Time".

Billy himself was mighty pleased with this performance, judging by his reaction at the end.

Billy Joel, magnificent, and the harmonies don’t get any tighter than that!

Love the harmonies in this one!
Billy- you know , music was my first love- in general - your music is topping it all.
At this moment I'm in need of something beautiful and I've come to the right place.
I like this concert! Thank you so much!
すばらしい!クラシックをポップスに?いや、ポップスになるクラシック。どちらにせよ、両者とも、すばらしい!
wow, yes, indeed this is the best version on youtube. Listen so rich voice and energy!
🌸 "This Night"
Didn't I say
I wasn't ready for a romance
Didn't we promise
We would only be friends
And so we danced
Though it was only a slow dance
I started breaking my promises
Right there and then
Didn't I swear
There would be no complications
Didn't you want
Someone who's seen it all before
Now that you're here
It's not the same situation
Suddenly I don't remember the rules anymore
This night is mine
It's only you and I
Tomorrow
Is a long time away
This night can last forever
I've been around
Someone like me should know better
Falling in love
Would be the worst thing I could do
Didn't I say
I needed time to forget her
Aren't you running from someone
Who's not over you
How many nights
Have I been lonely without you
I tell myself
How much I really don't care
How many nights
Have I been thinking about you
Wanting to hold you
But knowing you would not be there
This night
You're mine
It's only you and I
I'll tell you
To forget yesterday
This night we are together
This night
Is mine
It's only you and I
Tomorrow
Is such a long time away
This night can last forever
Tomorrow
Is such a long time away
This night can last forever

I was there 🎉❤
Billy + Beethoven is a great combo. Man, he was in good voice here.
最高! The best of his, the great performance. Thank you for posting.
Billy Joel always gave credit to his backing singers for their great harmonies.
Man, he really wrote some wonderful melodies back in his prime!
To be fair, Beethoven wrote the chorus.
@@adamkraemer9193 it’s like Steve Jobs once said: Good artists copy, great artists steal.
that's all Beethoven in this case
@@petermerelis It is only the chorus, which is credited to Beethoven in the album liner notes.
