Flying the MD500 Helicopter

- Join us on a flight in the amazing MD500 E helicopter, on a windy spring day in the UK, as we take off from Denham, practice landing in a confined area, work on some quick stops, and then head back home. The aircraft was built in 1989 and is fitted with the Rolls Royce 250C20B engine. The aircraft has some other modifications which we run through in the video!

The first helicopter I had contact was a Hughes 500C when I was 15 days old. I really love this thing. I became a pilot but I have never flown a 500. It's a dream I want to fulfill. This is a great chopper.
It’s a great ‘pilot’ machine - and I am sure it will live up to your expectations when you finally get your hands on one!

I remember flying as a kid in these things and just looking out the front window brings back memories! The smell of the fuel and everything, I would love to do this again
AB Helicopters Ltd. I like the high skid gear! My dad years ago had a Hughes 500C and before that, s Hughes 300C. The Hughes 500C was flown over power lines for weed control. And the Hughes 300C was used the same thing.
Hi there William, thank you for the comment - yes the 500 is a great bit of kit, very versatile! The 300 has its uses too, through not as many and obviously not as fast or as powerful as it’s older brother!!

They are great ‘pilots aircraft’ ! Responsive and nimble, plus, at least in the conditions I was operating in, had with plenty of surplus power !

gosh this heli is so col! ive never ever flown a helicopter before, im probably too young to do so, but i would love to one day, im sure its very hard, but i would love to spend time and learn,!
Like anything - if you put your mind to it and practice, it becomes much easier !!
Years ago I worked at a small county airport in Ohio, in my 6 years at that job I flow or went for a ride in 36 different type's of aircraft . three of them were helos ,the500 D was the most fun I ever had...... That saying a lot

8:30 I found myself puckering a bit seeing all the wind in the trees during the confined area landing. Wow, that's flying.
It was tight , certainly, but the 500 is a great , nimble and manoeuvrable machine which gives the pilots confidence to land in tight spaces
The 500, 600 & 900 N's are my favt. Simply b/c they have NOTAR

Me too - I've been up in one and I'm a natural (robinson R44) but this guy is lucky! MD 500!! I so hate him!!!! Some nice flying there :)

Hi, I am from SLOVENIA and in our country nobody has MD500.E Can anyone help me or know where in the neighboring countries so Italy, Austria, Croatia, Hungary it would be possible to fly with it.

I was just about to do my QXC when the lockdown came. Hopefully will have the rest of the course done by the end of the summer. Then the MD500 type rating is a goal.
I’m sure you will settle back into it quickly - fingers crossed for you ! What were you learning on for your PPL?
@@ABHelicopters thanks, yes hopefully. I'm just flying the R22 at the moment but I am a fixed wing instructor who flies a range of types from the Cirrus to a 1943 T6 so I have always been pretty progressive with my flying. Naturally I don't expect to jump from the Robinson to the 500 in an easy step but I believe in setting goals. The obvious turbine would be the 66 of course but who wants to be obvious!
The 500 is a perfectly reasonable step from pistons to turbine world. Along with the Bell206, often, they are not substantially more expensive than a piston powered R44 , and given your experience on a range of fixed wing aircraft the additional gauges to monitor in a turbine helicopter (eg Turbine outlet temp, N1 , torque) should not increase your workload dramatically, especially in comparison to a T6!

Yes, if you have two pilots onboard, especially if one is in training, it’s normal to ‘guard’ or ‘follow through’ on the controls
