- Hey, thanks for watching! This is a multi view start sequence of an MD 500 C turbine helicopter with a Rolls-Royce C 20 engine. We tried to get some cool angles so you can see what it looks like when the helicopter starts up. Just a reminder - this video is for informational purposes only! That sound, the sound of a turbine starting never gets old. Its like the first time I've heard it everytime!!!

In the 80s I was in the RAF and for four years I worked on the basic Jet Trainer, the Jet Provost. I heard the turn, crack, wumph, at least twenty times a day. I still love the sound. Thank you.

After 54 years of wanting, I managed to get my 206 rating, and of course you have to start the 250-C20 as part of that. I was so looking forward to that noise! But - the concentration needed to get the start right was so inTENSE I never heard a thing until she was running at 60% N1. Rather the concentration, than a bill for $400,000 I suppose.
10 years maintenance experience on the Little Birds. Safest and best helos ever built. Way too much fun to fly.

That is a Hughes 500C, MD didn't buy Hughes until 1984. So most people don't care but Hughes designed and manufactured outstanding Helicopters that changed the World and deserves the credit.
So technically this is a Hughes 369HS. You are correct. When MD bought Hughes in 1984 most people just called them MDs. It actually only gets to take the MD500C name when the engine is upgraded to the C20. They are mostly synonymous. Thanks!

@@helihaus McDonnell Douglas brought Hughes than Boeing brought McDonnell Douglas and than Boeing sold it off to MD Helicopters. It been going down hill since. Yes, I worked there for 3 years.

Absolutely Fantastic I can smell the Jet A, the photography was awesome, It reminds me of when I was alot younger and Mom worked at Hi Lift Helicopters in Plymouth Mi and I would hang out during the summer, I was able to go up with some of the pilots now and again......What a great time!!!!

Yes the D model is amazing. The ‘T’ tail is super sexy. The lower fuel burn and smoother 4 blade rotor (easier to track and balance) works perfectly for our photo missions. I do not have a hook on this bird.

I counted 5 or 6 ascending howls coming on in turn, like a symphony. Wonderful. Is it theoretically possible to get ground resonance with a 4 or 5 blade rotor, but just very rare?
JK-rv9tp With ANY rotor head with blades that can lead-lag, any time there is a input from a rotor disturbance that returns from the landing gear, that "rebound" if undampened or in phase to resonate, or increase the original disturbance in force, duration, or degree of imbalance.."ground resonance" can occur..quickly and with increasingly violent force.
Loading rotor and not being in contact with ground alleviates the condition by removing the feedback🙂
Ground resonance will shake your baby to lesser constituent parts..(and possibly detach your retinas)
*For those not familiar with helicopters, 2 bladed rotors are "semirigid" or braced, only able to change pitch..twisting in feathering axis, flap..rise and fall..and teetering..like a seesaw.
Rotors with 3 or more blades are free to also sweep foreward and backward in the rotational axis as the rotor turns..this advancing & retreating foreward/backward of blades as they travel around balances energy a little differently than the teetering like a seesaw of the 2 bladed rotor. When feedback from ground contact occurs, one blade gets out of balance from the others, it is like the weedeater or washer out of balance!
Great answer. But to Part 2, it is very rare on 4-5 blade rotors compared to 3 blade? I never hear about GR incidents on 500s or similar 4+ blade machines.@@francisconti9085

@@etarheel1 Oh, yes "..this ship will self destruct in 3 seconds." Quite literally.
I've also seen a Hughes 269 do the same..and the white Robinson that crashed in Texas, an example of possible mast bumping that led to blade flex into tailboom, severing..with all helicopters there are intrinsic "characteristics" to type of rotorhead, comprises..but the BRANTLY and AH-1Z /UH-1Y have unique rotorheads which put the lead-lag hinge quite a way away from the hub..this apparently helps reduce the likelihood of ground resonance in the 3 bladed Brantly and 4 bladed Bell helicopters

1st time in a C I had a 50 line with a bus tire on a hook, Set it on a block wall cross ways and put slack on the line, 1st try.

So, I just watched all three of your videos and I'd like to see more! You're an interesting host and the Arizona / Nevada topography is an excellent stage on which to reveal the ultimate adventures. Of course, your co-host, the 500C, has immense allure.
I'd like to offer a few suggestions to help grow your channel. As a viewer, I enjoy your commentary while still hearing the sound of the engine, rotor blades, and transmission humming in the background. It's a delicate audio to convey, technically speaking, but a fantastic soundtrack for your audience. Plus, they will come to appreciate and recognize the unique whine of the 369 series. Usually, though, the panoramic sound only comes through when you're talking, and your headset picks it up in the background. Most aviation videos suffer from this, but a few others have managed the pilot commentary/aircraft sounds as a consistent symphony. I always want to hear that mechanical noise muted slightly in the background even when you're not speaking.
The Parker to Vegas Bridges tour is cool, but I originally left the video about 2 minutes into it. "FAST FORWARD" conveniently shows you everything but abandons much of why a 500C aficionado might tune in. I'd break that down into 3- or 4-part series, all of them edited but at normal speed. This would offer plenty of time, in real-time, to learn about you, your history with the 500C, and perhaps your progress to arrive at such a wonderful aircraft. What did you initially train in: R-22, F-28., or a 300C? Have you flown the D and E models of the 369 series as well? Have you flown a Jet Ranger? How much joy do you derive from flying helicopters without hydraulically boosted controls? All the nuances of single-engine light helicopter aviation could be part of your conversations with your views as you roll and dive through the southwest landscape.
Of, course all of this takes time, money, and editing, ha!. You're off to an excellent start. I wish you well and look forward to your next adventure. I'm subscribed!
Wow! What great advice! Thank you so much for your input the feedback invaluable. It seems like great minds think alike. I have discussed several of those things you mentioned with my son who is a great flight engineer and video editor. I agree with the sound option and I plan on some flights with the squelch open to hear the turbine humming (think ASMR) Also on the schedule is a normal speed tour of the Colorado river. I should be recording that this coming weekend. We are working on different camera angles and things like that. This is all just for fun and because helicopters are awesome. Please keep the comments coming. I read all of them.
I am a fixed/rotor commercial pilot. In the rotor side I’ve flown 22, 44, 206, AS350, UH60 and of course the 500. The no-hydraulics make it an absolute blast to fly. Specifically for chasing off road cars through the desert. I’ll get some of those videos posted also. Cheers!!

Beyond Awesome 🎉🎉❤❤👍👍💯💯🤯🤯 Every starting angle of the helicopter is amazing, but especially the closeup view of the engine, is the best!! To one-up it, put a GoPro camera in the engine compartment, to, see the driveshaft up to the rotor head gearbox, turn!! That would be extra awesome 👍👍👍😎😎😎

It is! These all started as Alison 250s. Rolls Royce bought Alison in 1995. The C20 engines are all variants of the 250. Thanks!

@nickmaguire5104 That is the starter/generator you see with the cooling fan as it spools up the N1 turbine..gotta love the whoosh and low frequency resonance at lightoff.. "PHOOZZZCHHSHOOOEEEE"

Francisco is correct. It is the starter generator. High amp circuit power in starts the motor turning. After 50 percent N1 speed the start/gen switches to a lower amp reverse circuit to charge the battery and run accessories. One very expensive black motor does 2 jobs. Thanks!!
@@helihaus Thanks! I understand now. It is the generator used to start the n1 fans spinning and once 50% is reached the engine becomes self sufficient and it then switches to charge the battery and avionics.

What is the cruising main rotor RPM?
the C model came out with an Allison 250-C18 & the D with an Allison 250-C20 in the US - did the British modify them to Rolls Royce?
Rolls Royce purchased Allison in 1995 so they are the same same. Just more expensive now hahaha. Cheers.

I don't think McDonnell Douglas or MD Helicopters ever made a 500C model. That should of be a Hughes 500C.
Just curious, I have only flown the D and E models and the Bell 206's. They have the C-20B and R engines and we dont release until 58%. What is different about the C model that you release at 50%?
To be honest, I'm surprised the start sequence isn't automatically monitored to terminate at say 5% above self-sustaining rpm or maybe 45 seconds duration rather than physically holding the button in? Is this peculiar to rotary wing aircraft? Every fixed-wing gas-turbine I've ever worked on has an automatic start sequence.
Great catch you are absolutely correct. The POH states 'Start/ignition button - release at 58 to 60 percent N1' which is the same for all the C20 engines as you stated. My starter drops out just over 50% so that's when I release. I think the POH states that because there are times (especially first start when she's cold) that the N1 will actually dip back below 50% and hover there. My very seasoned mechanic told me that anything above 50% is fine but to watch close when its cold out. Thanks again and thanks for the comment. Cheers, Todd
