As someone who does character design. Like. Im getting a college degree in it. Illumination’s character design REALLY looks 2d with the bold shapes and simple smooth colors that SCREAM “this should be nice lineless 2d art”. They all look so bad with realistic lighting and textures and ughhhhhh just use toonboom harmony. Anyway Glitch Studios is doing the toony stretchy weird proportions in 3d leagues better than Illumination ever did. At least Illumination is anti-ai and was cool during the strikes.
I guess where it was the most obvious was The Lorax when everyone turned it into a meme but honestly, I've always felt like there was something very off about all of the movies designs. The only exception would be the Mario movie I suppose, but that's literally because they didn't design those guys 😆😆
Migration is a bit messy, but actually pretty good. Definitely worth the time. The only problem is that Awkwafina is again voicing one of the characters.
Not gonna lie the sequence with the superpowered Minions trying and failing miserably to save some random city in Despicable Me 4 was actually pretty funny to watch for me
THANK YOU for bringing up the dogwater vaseline art style that Illumination put the Grinch in, I genuinely hate that movie so much and the animation made it worse
I personally thought the first 2 were ok, but the 3rd and after were....interesting (in not the best of ways). The biggest issue I've always had is that the movies tend to be crude in many regards, but at least in the first 2 it was fairly balanced (in my personal opinion). Honestly, Megamind was definitely the better of the two, but the first two of the Despicable Me franchise weren't horrible.
Feels weird seeing DM4 over DM3 and both Minions movies. At least those movies had some form of creativity to them, even if they're pretty dumb. DM4 is pretty much as creatively bankrupt as it gets.
I didn’t realize the third movie had a gazillion plot lines. I really like your videos! I appreciate the little bits of writing tips. I’m trying to improve my stories all the time.
Best Illumination movies in my opinion: Despicable Me Sing The Super Mario Bros. Movie Migration The Secret Life of Pets Despicable Me 2 Minions: Rise of Gru Despicable Me 3 Sing 2
I actually like Despicable Me 4 because when I went with my bf to watch the movie for some reason after the climax he became like 10 times more clingy. I don't know what in the movie affected this change of heart but not really complaining. Also Poppy is top character.
I think the only “good” illumination films personally are Despicable Me 1, and The Mario movie, though I’m not sure if the ladder can be grouped up with the others because of it being so…. different, (pre existing IP, etc).
The Mario movie definitely stands out. I don't know if I would call it bad per se, but for me it just didn't strike the chord it needed to be considered good. I didn't really feel anything from it at all, whereas Despicable Me got me invested in the characters
@@brainless_mastermindI’m a Mario fan, so I loved it, but compared to every other illumination film, it’s the oddball adaptation. It’s certainly fair to not feel much / be neutral about it, if it didn’t have Mario in it, I would feel the same. Edit: I forgot the Dr Seuss adaptations, so it’s not actually that weird.
This may be controrversial but i love this franchise, it just gives me such nostalgia and grus character in every film is just too cold. 🥶 🔥 My ranking 4. Despicable me 3 6/10 3. Despicable me 4 8/10 (controrversial but i really liked this entrance to the franchise, maxime le mal and grus rival is so relatable and them singing a song at the end of the film was just too funny. (We even got to see the goat Vector whos arguably the 2nd best character in the franchise behind gru.) And i like the flashback where we get to see young gru sing a song. The opening scene was the best part of the film though, imo. Lucy was kinda bad this film though, her jokes were not funny and her awquad personality was just too cringe to watch. Tiebreaker Despicable me 1 and 2. 9/10 Both were just so good and iconic, i couldn't decide. Despicable me 1 in terms of the main antagonist 'OH YEAH!' and in terms of the humour. While the 2nd film wins in emotion and character arcs. Great video btw, and i respect all ur opinions.
I've always thought the nasal pads of the glasses were the pupils, just today i saw that they were normal glasses and now i can't find the pupils again, i feel threathend if i can't see her eyes. But good video
If I were gonna rank all of the illumination movies, Mario would definitely be near the top. I wouldn't call it bad per se, it just didn't really hit the right chord for me to be called good. Despicable Me really made me care a lot and hit me where it hurt you know? Whereas there might be some other illumination movies that weren't actively bad storytelling, they just didn't quite make me feel that, which is what I look for in a story. But it's all subjective in any case
@@brainless_mastermind Ok I respect your opinions. I would put Mario on top because it was a fun movie. And while it is obviously not as heartfelt as Despicable Me 1, it is still a masterpiece in comparison to Illumination's other work (at least in visuals and cinematography).
I'm gonna say, my personal rankings, best to worst, are: Despicable Me (good) Despicable Me 2 (eh) Despicable Me 4 (would be okay if I was forced to watch it) Minions: The Rise of Gru (see DM4) Minions (would watch at gunpoint) Despicable Me 3 (wouldn't watch at gunpoint)
I couldn’t agree more the first Despicable Me movie is the best! The third Despicable Me movie is okay and so is the first Minions movie. But everything else is the same script yet worse.
As a little kid I really weirdly liked minions, like I remember finding the opening 2d scene visually satisfying and the movie strangely…tasting…like…an apple slice???(idk it’s weird) and now I just see it as a very vivid memory, I watched it again a little while ago and was highly disappointed😭
In Ralphthemoviemaker's video on Minions and IHE's video on Sing the videos both talk about how bad the character designs are. I can recommend watching both of those videos as they're very good.
Not gonna lie, even as a kid who LOVED Illumination movies there were a few things about them I just couldn't help but hate 😂, like the Grinch having a protruding lower lip, WHO The hell thought that was a good idea??? 😂 Who???
If it wasn't for Despicable Me, the studio would've been dead
Whatever that is good or not is up to you
This is true, we wouldn't have THE MOST animation studio of all time /j
The fact that you need more than just one part to rank these movies shows that you care more than the people that actually make them
Pfft I just like ranting too much 🥲

@@brainless_mastermind Don't forget Migration. That movie has better character designs.

Ohhhhhhh boy but lol thanks good to know
Not gonna lie the sequence with the superpowered Minions trying and failing miserably to save some random city in Despicable Me 4 was actually pretty funny to watch for me
I liked the sequence when Ramsbottom calls them back from retirement and we see them making cheese and crap. That was surprisingly funny 🤣
only reason its good is because of the music 🗣️ 🔥 🔥 🔥
THANK YOU for bringing up the dogwater vaseline art style that Illumination put the Grinch in, I genuinely hate that movie so much and the animation made it worse
Illumination is silly like that 🤪

Yeah I'm definitely gonna go into more detail about that in the next one. But you have a point for sure
Despicable Me: Good
Despicable Me 2: Less than good
Despicable Me 4: Haven’t seen
Despicable Me 3: Bad
Minions 2: Looks like ass
Minions: God died
You get it lol
I didn’t realize the third movie had a gazillion plot lines.

I actually love despicable me it's such a classic. Sadly the sequels are just....
Too real. They definitely went hard with their first movie as a studio and after that it's been cash grab after cash grab
My opinion despicable me 2 is the best 😊

Despicable Me 1 as the only good Illumination movie?
Mario was awesome 😎 and you gotta see Migration. That movie was also amazing.

Am I the only one that always mistake the nose holdey things on her glasses for pupils sub-conciously
I can personally tell you no, no you aren't 😭😭
idk why despicable gets so much hate i feel like it could be the best a animated movie series of all time
If any film is the best, it's obviously the second. I give it an 85/100.

And this is what our big budget media looks like S M H
