  • General aviation opens up lots of opportunities-- flying for the $100 hamburger, punching holes in the sky for fun, flying for business. But you can also avoid traffic and commute to work in your plane. Bill Goebel of HangaRatz talks about his commute and how it saves him valuable time.

Ha! I just got home after commuting to work in my airplane and saw this video. Have done it for years. In my Cessna 150 Commuter.

I used to fly to work for about three years and absolutely loved it! I lived in the DC area and used to fly my experimental Velocity from the south side (where I lived) to the northern side (where I worked). I kept a car at the airport. With car traffic in the DC area, a morning commute in a car was a 1.75 hour journey. In the airplane it was 15 minutes. I had many a day cleaning frost off the wings. And then there was the one time I lost an engine and had to make an emergency landing into Dulles during their morning push (that’s an experience I’m glad I survived and will never forget). All in all, I look back on that time fondly. I travel a considerable amount all over the country in my current job and use my airplane (Piper Malibu) almost exclusively. Aviation is a wonderful thing!!!!

Once upon a time, I had a job just across Long Island Sound. I spent a lot of time thinking about commuting by boat. In the end, I decided it would require two cars and two docks. For a pilot, make that two airports and two cars. In my situation, there was an airport on the other side, but none near enough to me.

A guy I was aquatinted with, maybe 20 years ago, let his wife talk him in to moving from the San Francisco bay area up to Amador County. His wife wanted to move so she agreed that he could get a plane and keep working, commuting to San Jose (he may be been going to Reid Hillview - my memory is getting fuzzy). I would occasionally chat with him via amateur radio during our commutes as he was in the plane around the same time I was was in the car (my drive was about 50 minutes). I recall
he had close access to public transit on the work side and it was a real short ride on a bus from the airport to the job. He was doing it in a Cherokee. He discovered quickly that an instrument rating was required. San Jose isn’t quite as unreliable as say, Oakland. But anyone that flies in the bay area everyday knows that things can be IFR every other day, year round.

I like that Bill is flying a C150. There's a young lady on YT that flies her little C150 all over the place (like the Carolina's to Washington state). Nice video...

I weekend commute to the glider airport. 25min flight in my rv4 vs 1:10min drive. I've been doing it for about 4 years now most soaring weekends and I've never gotten stuck, but I have had to leave early a couple times to beat a front home.

Maybe thats why its called a Commuter, we were all supposed to be doing it this way by now according to 60's flying magazines

I travel all over Texas and Oklahoma for work. Most days I fly my Columbia 350 and the company pays me a rental rate per hour based on Hobbs meter. The 5 hour drive to Tulsa is an hour and a half flight with a $15 Uber ride at the end. I am home at night vs a long 2 day drive and over night stay to get one day of work.

Can you share what you get reimbursed for your aircraft hours? I travel a fair bit for work and I want to do a similar deal after I get a pilots license. Currently it is federal mileage rate and commercials flights on Delta or Southwest.

A CFI friend of mine used to do this --- lived just outside of KGNT. Used to commute daily via C-172SP to KAEG.

working at an airport isn't necessarily an advantage. I used to work at KIKR and the closest ramp to my office was 2nm --- a nice walk ...

I love flying to work! I live 15 minutes away from my local airport and fly to an airport 10 minute drive from work. Bill is right about mountain ridges in Southern California. Reduces travel time greatly!

As an ATC that has worked at a tower/tracon and an Enroute center, I know the regulars. My schedule is basically the same each week and I know the guy who flies back and forth every Wednesday at 10:00pm, he is always on his way and he’s a great pilot to work with.

Bill thinks like an airline pilot. I read the forecast for myself with an eye toward "what could go wrong".

When the weather is nice I commute. I live 7 min from my local airport. I work at a civilian/military airport. I just park at the civ FBO and run to my office on the military side. It’s a great way to get time in the air and it forces me to get a couple mile jog in when I fly. My drive is an hr. From pre flight to shutdown is about 30 min.

I fly from central Missouri to Western Missouri once a week. We own a cleaning company and have accounts all over the state. From Central Missouri I can be anywhere in the state in one hour instead of the two and 3 Hour Dr. each way. I fly a Cherokee 140. All of the airport we fly to have a loaner cars.

Mooney use to advertise a Mile per Hour per horsepower. Cessna 150 can do better than that, and get up to 20 mpg. Once I had the blimp close enough that I go to the house 100 miles away and commute for a few days in my Cherokee. It was rare that I had a chance to be home and not on vacation.
