- Shake down of my new Ninemeister built close ratio gearbox, uprated clutch and lightweight flywheel.
What a transformation too, turns a reasonably quick car into something incredibly capable and proper good fun!

Amazing gearshifts. Great sound!
Wow the shorter gears make a massive difference! I assume its a massive undertaking?
They sure do, I had Ninemeister in Warrington do the work. It’s quite an expensive undertaking but one very happy with. It’s the most effective modification for the 981 manual bar an engine swap.
how much was it mate?
Nice few laps there, car sounds great, I have a base 2.7 manual cayman and will be looking to do Oulton next year, mine is on standard suspension and Pirelli tyres, do you run standard pressures or drop them by 1 or 2 psi
Thanks, the 2.7 is great fun and so is Oulton Park. I have previously managed okay on standard suspension with Michelin pilot sport 4s tyres. I usually drop them to about 26psi cold and as the tyres warm up they get up to around 32psi hot so I’ll drop another 2psi out then. The car is quite heavily modified in that video and any later videos. Most vital first step for a track day is get new brake fluid, something like Motul rbf600 or better as old or inadequate fluid will boil
Great driving, awesome gearbox setup, I didn't think this was a plausible thing to do on a 981. Would you share the cost of the mod? Understand if you don't want to share this with a stranger on UA-cam!
Thanks, it has made a massive difference to the driving experience of this car. I take it that you’re already aware that the standard gearing is too long on the 981. There are a few options out there now for re-gears and final drives but Ninemeister offered the cheapest solution with a 3rd, 4th and 5th re-gear. They charge £750 per gear then there is gearbox removal and rebuild costs at £1.2k iirc
@@adrianc101 yeah mate I'm aware of the infamously long gearing. Ive only seen final drive options for the GT4. That's alot cheaper than I expected. Thanks for the info, I can imagine it's the perfect match for the 2.7, definitely more exploitable on the road. Don't suppose you know if they touch the PDK gearbox or is it just the manual?
@@skulduggery7028 I forgot to add the vat on to them figures and it’ll cost more if you want a lightweight flywheel and clutch plus I ended up having them fit some headers and remap whilst it was in. It’s a much better car now, it’s still not a torque monster but it’s a quicker car now and perfect for small/medium size circuits. I’ve never heard or seen much about mods or gearing for the pdk box.
@@adrianc101 Nice one thanks for the info, the 2.7 is preferable for me, I've been used to a GT86 anyway so no rocket ship, but you can wring it out all the time. I will bear this in mind and give 9m a shout. Thanks again.
close ratio box is pretty awesome
Best modification on the car! Along with the lightweight flywheel, it has really livened the engine up.
Seems way more exciting with the close ratio 'box. Love it
It definitely helps, a little more torque would be nice too but it’s still a fun car.
did you also tune 2.7 engine ?
Yes, I added a pair of design-tek catless headers along with a remap.
@@adrianc101
can you give more info for this tune ?
@@cayman9815 I don’t know much about the tune, I handed the car over to Ninemeister UK and they put a tune on it. I would like to get it on a dyno to do a power run
@@adrianc101
yes pls do that
you also have different sound ?
what was total cost ?
@@cayman9815 Yes, the sound will be design-tek catless headers with standard non pse rear silencer
