Oh Lord, sing it Patti!!!! Throwing my pocketbook at the screen. Look at those shoulder pads and that wig. Memories of the 80's whew. Excuse me while I find my old blazers.
Ajani Johnson That’s not true, because it was as much about looks then as it is today, which is why all the attention and popularity went to Chaka Khan. In the black community Chaka was clearly preferred to Pattie. Just about nobody cared that Pattie was a much better singer. In fact which is why Phyllis Hyman committed suicide, because she felt that she couldn’t compete with young pretty Janet Jackson who had no singing talent at all. As well as Jennifer Holliday felt that her popularity was hampered by Janet Jackson and why Jennifer lost all that weight, but it still did not put her up in Janet’s popularity ranking. Even on soul train, the absolute best female dancer that show ever had, Damita Jo Freeman, was overlooked because she was not pretty, and they replaced her very quickly. And it is only now that Damita is being remembered. So there was always a preference for looks in the music industry. You didn’t have to be hot to get in but the better talents were overlooked for the ones with better looks. The only difference between then and now is that then there was still a predominance of genuine talent. Sure, people hated Diana Ross but regardless she had talent, people thought Stephanie Mills was a little snob but Stephanie had talent, people drooled over Chaka Khan but Chaka had talent. Okay, and Natalie Cole was another powerhouse who got overlooked like Pattie, Roberta Flack, Cheryl Lynn, Jennifer Holiday, Phyllis Hyman, and several others. Natalie was certainly a better singer than Stephanie but Steph was still much bigger in popularity. Though regardless, all these singing divas had talent, and only a few lacked it for singing such as Janet for one, though she made up for it dancing. Janet couldn’t sing but she was the baddest female dancer out there. And I believe that Patti is getting all the glory she deserved all along today because that talent of yesteryear is lacking today. People are missing that true talent and looking back into the past and reaching for those oldies but goodies again.
@@bc1248 wow! Excellent review of those singers and that era! I agree with your take on Janet too! Would u say the same for Miss Paula Abdul? Great dancing not much of a singer?
I just wanna go on the record and say that this whole debate about image vs talent is irrelevant because Miss Patti has BOTH. She has ALWAYS got her drag on and serving it. She is the REAL DEAL.
For anyone whos listening to this in 2016, thumbs up to you. I saw my mom watch this video and she couldn't move, all she did was watch and smile. Now I understand
I got "IT" when I seen it air & I was only 17 then. She was singing & walking off the stage, the audience was STILL applauding so Patti came BACK out to bless Apollo with anutha song. CHILLS!
Everytime she hits the Apollo stage, the walls say "brace yourselves...she's about to blow the roof of this joint....lol".....if you know her life story, you know that voice and the fact that she's still here on earth proves that GOD is REAL, KEEPS ON BLESSING, and is GOOD ALL THE TIME!!!!!
*I was blessed as a kid to see this performance when it aired on the UHF channel on my tv. My mother's aluminum foil was used on those antennas that night!*
Is it legal to sing like that? My goodness! Man, Patti Labelle has no parallel! That voice is out of this world. Unlike any other. Words can't express how phenomenal this is. Let's see you do that Beyonce lol
IT JUST DON'T MAKE NO SENSE HOW SPLENDID SHE IS. SHE IS THE BEST OF ALL. EVERY TIME SHE HIT THAT NOTE THE CROWD GO WILD! NOBODY WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO OUT DO PATTI. AND SHE IS OVER 60 AND IS STILL ABLE TO DO EVEN BETTER THAN THIS PERFORMANCE. GO TO THE ONE WHEN SHE WAS AT THE APOLLO IN 1991. SHE BLEW THE ROOF OFF THAT PLACE AND ROLLED AROUND LIKE NOBODY BUSINESS! :)
For Decades Patti Has been Throwing that Mic Stand. .She originated it. .And the apollo audience waz AwesoMe. . .ThIz iz 1 of the Venues Patti LaBelle will always OWN. . .

PATTIE , PATTIE , PATTIE, A TRUE QUEEN/VOICE OF VOCALS PERIOD IN MUSIC, NOT NO ONE CAN REACH YOUR BOUNDS OR GRASP WHEN IT COMES TO VOCALITY NOT FOR THE PAST 50 PLUS YRS AND NOT FOR THE NEXT 50. XXXXX
Oh, she was feeling it that night! I would put this one performance up against 98% of musicians entire catalog. This is what being a performer, an entertainer, a singer is ALL about. I don't know how the Apollo still has a roof on it.
Oh Yeah it's so very true ...that hair is touching the freaking ceiling of the Apollo its so..so..big But !! it aint no where's as big ..huge ..colossal as that beautiful voice ...no body does it quite like miss Patti Labelle
Reflecting on the death of MJ has really inspired me to go back and watch all of these timeless jewels. While doing so, I have come to one conclusion: What was being done in those days was, and will always be, Real Music!! In the words of MJ, this video is just "magic!" May videos like these remind us of what music was meant to do: inspire and bring joy and love.
I remember watching this on tv with my mom when I was a kid.My mom started tearing up and I thought something was wrong with her.I decided to see if I could find it today and now I understand.
She's my Philly sista!! With Insane vocal abilities and I love her for the rawness that she allows her self to bring on each and every heart-felt song....AMAZING FOREVER!! There will NEVER BE another PATTI LABELLE!
@reallyblessed I miss real music so much, I decided to change career paths at 38 years of age and pursue music production...the Jacksons have ALWAYS been my biggest inspiration in wanting to get into the music industry. I'm a 70's baby, music was simply classic back then. :)
That microphone went on a 45-day workman’s compensation after this performance 🔥
Underrated comment
😂😂
2023 I'm just here to see my daddy play them keyboards again. He's in the band in the corner her left our right

Patti LaBelle in the 80s was unstoppable❤
Still is! Did you see the Mariah tribute; she did something with her voice that’s never done or that we’ve never heard
Oh Lord, sing it Patti!!!! Throwing my pocketbook at the screen.
Look at those shoulder pads and that wig. Memories of the 80's whew. Excuse me while I find my old blazers.
She invades my soul when she sings. These entertainers now a days can't hold a candle to this kind of genuine talent. I love Ms. pattie

Patti LaBelle never sings rainbow the same way she’s goona take you in a different direction every time
When she fluttered her wings @ 1:37 it was all over for me. Somebody call the paramedics, I needed gas and air. Mama Patti conquered.
Back then...Less about looks more about talent...today more about looks less about talent. What a shame.
That's true
i agree

I don't care what anyone says, her voice is a gift from God, and this can't be taught
I just wanna go on the record and say that this whole debate about image vs talent is irrelevant because Miss Patti has BOTH. She has ALWAYS got her drag on and serving it. She is the REAL DEAL.
