I saw this masterpiece in the theater four times: once with some guy friends, than with my wife, then with our teenager and finally in black and white with some other friends. Everyone loved it.
I believe that this is even better than the first Godzilla film from 1954. It is not fair to compare special effects with the technology changes since that time, however the human story in this one is just magnificent. Every major and minor character has a good story arc

Had the privilege of seeing this in theaters twice, once in color and then again in black and white. Just phenomenal. I love the human drama. Puts the American films to shame, particularly on the modest budget. Excited to see what these filmmakers do next.

This movie was not only a master class in film making, but social media marketing. If they had spent anything on a marketing budget and run some TV ads, and distributed it to more theaters, I'm sure it would have made a couple hundred $million in the US alone. But even with word of mouth, this movie did amazingly well in theaters and became the most highly anticipated streaming movie ever.

100%! Saw it first in IMAX and it was like you were standing face to face with the King of Monsters. His roar was so much better than the screechy Legendary version. It was positively thunderous, and you felt it in your whole body. But what was even more amazing was hearing the other people in the theater sniffling during the quiet scenes. That was powerful!

The fish look weird because their insides have come outside of their mouths because of the decompression they experience when Godzilla drives them to the surface. It's a great foreshadowing of their plan to kill Godzilla.
Also, you can notice a black mark growing up Noriko's neck at the end in the hospital. According to the film-makers, she was infected by Godzilla cells, which is how she survived.

This movie is a veteran's nightmare.
Noriko's last words were, "Is your war over?"
This film says we should respect all the suffering veterans.
And the ejection scene. I was impressed.
Tachibana didn't want any more people to die on the planes he maintained.

The destroyer Yukikaze that appears in the film was called the lucky ship because it survived many fierce battles during the Pacific War without any damage. After the war, it served as a repatriation ship, bringing many soldiers back to Japan. That story also strengthens my feelings about this film.

The movie is titled "Minus One" because after WWII, Japan was devastated and at its lowest. Knocked all the way down to zero, with them trying to rebuild... Then Godzilla shows up and makes things even worse, taking Japan from zero to minus one.
Your reaction is probably my favorite so far because you really caught on quickly to the meanings and emotional weight for the characters and what Shikishima's story arc had to be. Fun fact, it is revealed in other related media material that Tachibana, the mechanic, really wanted to help save lives, but he was stuck fixing up planes, just for the planes and pilots to fly out and sacrifice themselves as kamikazes. Tachibana put in the ejection seat because he too was tired of people dying when they could have lived instead.
The only time I came close to tearing up in another Godzilla movie was when I was watching the original 1954 movie. When you see people dying of radiation poisoning and the mother telling her child that they were about to reunite with their father (who died during the war) soon, just before being crushed underfoot by Godzilla. Those are the moments when Dr. Serizawa realizes that for the sake of everyone else... he has to use the weapon he developed on accident and sacrifice himself so one one else could replicate the weapon to use on anyone or anything else ever again.

I saw the film three times at the cinema. The first two times was the colour version, the third the minus colour. And I have to say it was exceptional all three times. The four times Godzilla appeared were epic. The "Minus One" is that Japan after the second world war was reduced to zero due to the two bombs, and the carpet bombing. With the appearance of Godzilla, they were reduced to minus one. Meaning, they were lower than zero.

In my opinion Godzilla Minus One and Shin Godzilla are both much better than the Monsterverse Godzilla films, particularly the 2014 first attempt. It is not always about throwing money and special effects at a wall hoping it will stick. Actual story telling, timing of events and scenes, and emotional elements make movies work.
Godzilla's eyes in this movie have intelligence, unlike the Shin Godzilla version. The Godzilla in this movie is smarter and shows hatred of humanity which is reflected in the way they portrayed his eyes.

Both Hidetaka Yoshioka and Ryunosuke Kamiki are main characters in the movie!...I was in Japan to see my favourite band LIVE for a second time..after flying out to Japan in Jan earlier in the year to see them...During my Jan trip I visited Shinjuku which has a hotel with the head on Godzilla hanging over the roof...It lights up and puffs smoke as I recall...You can book and stay in a room which has the balcony of the Godzilla head on it....I also stopped off at the Shin Godzilla statue near Hibiya Station during my hotel transfer day. (between Shibuya and Ariake)..During my second trip I stopped to take photo's of the Family Mart conbini store in Taishido which has a large King Kong model hanging on to the front of the store.

    * Amazing that Godzilla Minus One (2023) was made for under $12 million - just 1/13 of the budget of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024).
The American Monsterverse Godzilla is like a juicy hamburger while the recent Japanese Toho Godzilla is like a gourmet steak - both are “delicious” depending on your mood.
    * The latest American “MonsterVerse” Godzilla movies were full of CGI “eye candies,” and did not require me to think very hard.
In licensed “monster” movies such as Godzilla vs Kong (2021) and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), I just “kicked back” and enjoyed the CGI spectacles.
More importantly, these two big-budget (over 130 million USD each) “popcorn flicks” were hugely profitable globally. This contractually restricts when and where the Japanese Toho could release or stream its Godzilla movies.
    * The latest Japanese “Toho” Godzilla movies were allegories of Japan’s traumas, which required me to think deeply.
In Shin Godzilla (2016), the bureaucratic Japanese government failed to address the 2011 (rapidly unfolding) triple disasters of earthquake -> then tsunami -> then nuclear plant meltdown using an “evolving” Godzilla as an allegory.
In Godzilla Minus One (2023), the people-led effort defeated Godzilla (temporarily) as Japan rebuilt after World War II (post-1945) with a compelling human story of “survivor guilt.”
These two low-budget (under 12 million USD each) “monster” movies won numerous awards including Best Picture in Japan (both) and Godzilla Minus One won an Oscar in the US for Best Visual Effects (the first-ever for a low-budget monster movie).

Have you read James Stokoe’s Godzilla Half Century War comic? Gorgeous art and a brilliant story about one man’s repeated encounters with Godzilla over several decades. Would make for an excellent movie, similar to the plot you seemed to be predicting early on here.

Okay so why is it called minus one? I've seen this question come up many times so allow me to explain. When Japan was destroyed, it was reduced to ground zero and/or they had nothing. Now you include Godzilla into the mix who destroys Japan even more furthering what little Japan had and what's lower than 0? -1. Thus Godzilla -1.0.

Epic reaction haha, also while minus one's atomic breath is highly destructive is not really that strong compared to the other godzilllas. Becayse the others works more as a lazer, por example a wedding torch on the same place while more powerfull than a small oyrotechnic will not produce the same level of area destruction but the torch will always be more powerfull.

I would have had it up weekend of release, but after the better part of editing for ten hours, I accidentally lost all the footage and had to start again. So I shelved it for a week out of pure frustration. Then it has to go through the UA-cam algorithm and re-edited when it’s blocked. That all takes time and resources.
      So thanks for the comment.

Well, I enjoyed this film, I just wondered the height of Godzilla, 150 feet the first scenes it was like a good estimate. BUT later when he destroys Tokio the beast looks like another one, TALLER, with a smaller head !!! !!! Is this part of the fun or what, from earlier japanese productions, when the beast floats in the water just the huge head it looks very plastic, ha ha I mean I dont really mind, the movie has a beautiful message and well written, you dont get many of these flics Godzilla is a legend...

As another Godzilla fan, loved the collection, that was a really cool book! Anyway, loved this movie, one of the few I believe lived up to the hype but I know I’m also heavily biased. 🤭 This is the first movie I’ve ever felt scared of Big G, I saw it in theaters and brought my Mom and gosh, chills and awe the whole time. I actually felt for the humans so bad as he massacred the people and the atomic breath was stunning. Ugh, love this movie so much!

that version of godzilla was obviously defeated by those larvaes, I can understand that but I mean that every godzilla is always invincible to conventional weaponry, even Shin Godzilla was invincible to those weapons until he got damaged by MOPs and confirmed to get killed by the 1.2 megaton B-83, if it was dropped in the movie, according to the director Hideaki Anno. Monsterverse Godzilla's Evolved Form is basically different but it doesn't make him bad, it was his purpose to get evolved to combat better
