Update: I had this bike for a month (rented) and have since given it back. I really enjoyed it, it's a fantastic engine for the ~150cc class. The fit and finish is excellent for the price (OTR in Indonesia is around 38,000,000 IDR rupiah). Looks really cool. Can't really fault it except perhaps for the riding position (I'm 180cm) which was a little too bent forward for my liking, but perhaps could be fixed with some new handlebars and risers. I think if Yamaha brings the 300cc from the MT-03 (or 250cc / MT-25 in the Indonesia market) into the XSR family that would be a very, very compelling package.
Thankfully, an English review for XSR 155. And better yet, you spoke about your experience in riding the bike. Most reviewers focus much on the technical stuff and specs. Comparing how it feels to ride the XSR with other bikes of the same class is really very helpful. Love your honest review. New sub here.
Great and relaxed review! Yeah please do a Kawasaki w175 test drive review as well.. a lot of what's available are not in English and not really being compared to XSR 155 which would really be helpful to those deciding which one to get. Thanks!
W175 is no match compared to XSR 155. This has 19 bhp and 6 gears and cruises at 100kph with ease. W175 just had around 13bhp. If you want better ride quality then you can adjust or change the suspension of xsr to suit bad roads. There's no engine with vva like this one in the market
Hi. Thanks for the English review. I hope that you do manage to review the W175 as that is also interesting to see the comparison. Have you already ridden the W175 as you mentioned just after 23 minutes that it has a more powerful engine. That interested me, so I googled the power and a couple of results put the W175 around 13HP? Strange! Thanks :)
I've ridden a W175 but it was customized so I'm going to find a stock one to do a back-to-back comparison with. It has higher displacement but maybe since it's a more simple engine (air cooled, carb) it puts out less HP?
Jon Yongfook good points ,sir. Engines with old tech , especially carburettor equipped engines, could give lower hp even having large displacements. On the other hand you can have so much hp with a slightly lower displacement with higher techs equipped, such as fuel injectors instead of carb, liquid cooling instead of oldskool air cooling. Etc.
In Indonesia, there are so many bike modificator bro. I hope that you will create vlog again (xsr155 upgrade) Anyway, thank you so much for your information Good luck bro 👍
It would be useful if you posted in future your weight, height, inside leg measurement as well as arm length. Your post comments contradict what you said in the video about the finish and cutting costs; I just don't see it 🤔 It would also be useful to see how the bike pulls uphill and 2s up. Yes I'm in Bali and yes I'm buying 1, fancied the 250 but no decision yet on whether it's going to be released in Indonesia.
I stand by my comments in the video and the comments below :) The fit and finish of the bike in general is excellent. The switchgear and dash in particular feel much more premium than the price you pay for this bike. But having said that, it's a bit plastic-fantastic. The plastic tank, the plastic bash guard - good quality finish on both but they are cost saving measures for sure. These are nitpicks though. All in all, it's probably the best bike available at this price point. FWIW I ended up buying its sibling, the WR155R (which I have now fully customized, will have to do a video on it some day). Same engine, but in a trail bike form factor. Interestingly, the fit and finish on the WR is noticeably poorer quality. But I wanted the trail bike form factor as it's more comfortable for me.
I have tried it in Singapore, my view - Sitting position is not comfortable..and seat also not have much cushion cause pain after few minutes..other than that looks promising
If you're also looking for performance, get this one. If you're only after the retro looks, you can go with the w175. Both bikes have a bit of aggressive riding position and they're both built with, mostly, premium parts.
Very interested In this bike because of its looks, yamaha, and mainly the position. So does your wrist hurt after a one hour ride or so? If it does can u suggest a upright position bike in the similar price point which available in india? Thanks in advance
Hey Jon, if you had to choose between the Yamaha XSR 155 or the Honda CRF 150L, which one would it be? You don't know how happy I am to watch this video of someone comparing the two bikes that I'm debating with myself to buy for the past several months. I live in the Philippines which probably has the same road conditions in Indonesia. I'm choosing either of the two as my first bike by the way. In your opinion, which one is better? Cheers mate!
I think I would go for the XSR in that case, it’s the more fun bike to ride. More power than the CRF150. The XSR is also quite a big step up in terms of quality of the finish.
I am also pleased to see a review in English and any other reviews or tips on modifying this bike should post their UA-cam links? I have just purchased a Yoshimura GP Magnum exhaust for the Yamaha XSR125 we cant get the 155 but need to know when you change the exhaust to the Yoshimura what do you do with the Oxygen sensor? Did that XSR155 have an oxygen sensor bolted into the exhaust? can anyone help with a solution?
wow watched the rest of the video! I have never seen so many scooters in a video, ever! also other things I noticed! dogs with road sense? as bikes shot past them! people running on the road! as the mayhem around them enfolds!with cars and bikes streaming past! and calling the bike a commuter is an insult, I think!to what a great machine it is! just my thoughts! anyway enjoyed your review! but I could never live in a place with 50 thousand scooter riders all deciding to go out for the day! all at the same time!
OK I bought one; an excellent machine needing as you say adjustment of the riding position. FYI there are 2 helmet locks under the seat and you can also adjust the backlight brightness of the multi function clock👍. I need to mention also that it is not a "bash plate" on the front of the engine but a "couling" the purpose of which is to protect the engine from water and dirt being thrown up from the front wheel (because of the short front fender). You also get a free XSR helmet and a cold/hot drinks flask; not sure for how long though? Hope this will also help others considering buying 👍.
hi, i'm short (150cm) with an inseam of around 68-70cm. any idea what can be done to this bike to accommodate vertically challenged riders like myself? was thinking of shaving the seat and maybe adjusting the suspension. not sure if there are lowering links and whether that's advisable.
There is not a lot of scope for reducing the seat height however I have seen on UA-cam videos to lower the bike ride height which might be what you are looking for 🤔

I'm around 6ft and for me, yes there is a slight lean forwards. I don't think I could do long distance on this bike, the riding position is not conducive to that IMO. It's great for short bursts around town though.
I’ve had it for a month and have taken a pillion about 50% of the time I’m on it. No complaints, the front and rear disc brakes do their job nicely! I don’t think the riding position is for me though. I’ve noticed some cramping in my wrists after longer rides which I normally don’t have with other bikes.

True
Will it be suitable for weekly rides of about 200-300 km ?
Hey man, thanks a lot for doing this. Any ideas on how someone can get their hands on one in the US?
Can u please tell if this bike will launch in India? If yes, when?
Wow you're a bit taller than I am and still leaning forward. I definitely will have to lean even more....
English finally!, been watching reviews for this bike for moths having zero clue on what they were saying 😀 thanks for posting this👌

Oh yeah! Me too!
How's the suspension? Light set up? Instrument cluster etc?

This does in fact have a hook that you can use to secure your helmet under the seat tho that requires you to remove the seat then put it back
I have tried it in Singapore, my view - Sitting position is not comfortable..and seat also not have much cushion cause pain after few minutes..other than that looks promising

Nice review, Bro. Thanks.
This is going to get huge success in India if priced perfectly..

How it feels suspension and breaks of the bike. The radius is it picks less when u have an u turn?
Lovely bike dude
Although the Kawasaki W175 has a 20cc advantage over the Yamaha. The XSR155 has a nearly 6hp power advantage, although it is also 6kg heavier.
Good review sir! I’m torn between this one and the kawasaki w175 and honda cb150r
If you're also looking for performance, get this one. If you're only after the retro looks, you can go with the w175. Both bikes have a bit of aggressive riding position and they're both built with, mostly, premium parts.

Btw the kawasaki w175 is 5-speed and carbureted. The xsr155 is fuel injected.
