Gruppe M Ram Air system- may require modification for use with CSL intake due to only using scoops- USed to illustrate a design for your own intake scoop system- not recommending a purchase just the design to drive cold air. Using it would require modificaiton with the TMS airbox.

    It’s finally here!
There has been a lot of controversy over the Turner motorsports CSL airbox since it does not utilize the stock CSL snorkel. For those who don’t know the Snorkel draws colder air directly from the external environment via a small inlet on the CSL bumper. Turner’s R and D released a chart showing that their CSL airbox flows better than both the stock airbox, and CSL airbox. So how is it that the TMS Airbox showed improved flow over other CSL intakes? Is this marketing? we don’t think so. The answer to why the TMS airbox flows better is simple: Laminar air flow which is achieved by the velocity stack.
When we look at the Turner airbox we see the bell curve style velocity stack. When we compare it we see that the stock CSL airbox uses a flat flange. Now, viewing this chart we can see when compared to a velocity stack, the flat flange limits airflow and doesn’t compete. In theory this would make the TMS design superior for air flow. In fact This concept of airflow has been used in aviation design for years. i always knew my M3 could fly!
Now many of you will say that this airbox cannot draw cold air like it does with a snorkel! While there has been debate over cold air making a difference on the dyno, lets assume that cold air does in fact make a significant difference. This being the case, there are solutions to getting cold air you want without the use of a snorkel. Using a ram Air device as the one shown here cold air can be drawn into the engine bay; it isn’t important that it isn’t hooked up like the stock CSL snorkel; the velocity stacks design will ensure that this cold air is drawn in at maximum flow, arguably better than the stock snorkels smaller inlet. If the previously mentioned ram air system isn’t something you’d like, there is many other options such as an air inlet via the left side headlight or the simple air scoops that install to the kidney grille that can help draw cold air into the engine bay. The gruppe M system first mentioned design is the best for driving air into into the engine bay, but will not utilize the direct connection and will require some modification, so its not a perfect fit. However it was used to illustrate a concept and its design can be used to make something work to take advantage of the velocity stack design of the TMS airbox.
In theory, using Turners Velocity stack design along with a means of bringing cold air into the engine bay is a winning combination.
The sound produced by the CSL air intake box is very well known, we imagine the TMS box with the velocity stack will be no slouch!
While this is our personal opinion, based on first impressions we honestly believe the TMS air intake box is the perfect solution for the CSL conversion both in performance and in cost, were really looking forward to seeing what the DYNO has to say. it’s so amazing to see continued R and D for what has become a classic BMW, so we say thank you ! The airbox comes in a complete kit, which makes installation much easier. Be sure to like and subscribe as we will be showing the whole process!
