Dictionary definition perfect characters are bland and if they had a taste it would be stale and flat. Characters with flaws make them more fleshed out and interesting which is why I like kokichi and nagito. If characters with flaws had a taste they’d taste fizzy and have lots of flavour.

I personally don’t think Chihiro’s character was handled the best, and comes off as insensitive. It’s also pretty unrealistic, if their deal is exactly what the plot says it is (cis guys who truly prefer to present male will not typically turn to cross dressing as a defense mechanism). I still love them to bits, and prefer to brush the weird stuff aside

as a guy whos been harassed for not being masculine enough basically my entire life and had my gender questioned even by people who claimed to respect me i can kind of relate to Chihiro. im not saying we don't need more (positive) trans rep and i'm definitely not saying chihiro's story was executed perfectly, but not every gender nonconforming character has to be trans sheeeeesh
People need to keep in mind that Japan is a place where people really don't give a shit about these "discriminatory" things. They don't make characters like Angie because they're making fun of a type of person, they're just making a character.

Also, in the original version Angie doesn't even worship "Atua" her God is just referred to as "kami-sama" which is what you'd call any God. As for Atua being a Polynesian God, yes there are gods referred to as that, but it is once again mainly a catch all for any God. Angie's whole religion is treated as more of a joke/cult. The whole Atua thing didn't even exist until the localization happened, and I'm guessing they only made it "Atua" and not "God" so people wouldn't think she was talking about the Christian God. Angie's character has a ton of problems and digs into colorist and religious stereotypes, intentional or not.
Chihiro's story is that of a young boy bullied because of his physical weakness, so he hid away by cross-dressing and pretend to be female so that people would stop.
Chihiro didn't change his gender, he didn't undergo any intervention, he never mentioned that he wanted to be female.
He wanted to be accepted and not constantly bullied for his physical weakness that wasn't even his fault he was born with.
Those people calling "transphobia" are just mindless idiots that think.. Actually no, they don't think. I can't even possibly know how would they arrive to such conclusion. Nonetheless, stop pushing your values where they don't belong to.

Im actually happy that chihiro his character is that way i used to have a similar problem while starting puberty since i always was boyish and I never acted female, even my facial features were more male then fem, so I used to portray myself as boy so I wouldn’t be hated on so much, after a while and some therapy sessions I learnt how to accept myself how I was and how I feel and now I can finally be comfortable with my feminine side again
Just a fyi, being a trans woman/girl is not innately about "wanting" to be female. They are female (gender wise). But you're right about the rest of this. As a trans man, I personally like to HEADCANON Chihiro as a trans girl, but I like the idea of him being a cis boy as well. I am well aware of him being technically canonically male, so it's fine. I think the issue lies in by how Chihiro's story (as in how it's handled by the writers and talked about by the in-game cast) inadvertently creates harmful and damaging mockery of actual trans girls and trans women.

So I haven't personally seen any official information confirming this, so take what I'm gonna say with a grain of salt. But there's this theory of the characters' ages. During the scrum debates, the characters' death portraits are supposedly aligned from the oldest to the youngest. Rantaro, for example, is always one of the first characters that you see while Kaito and Kokichi are towards the back, meaning that Rantaro was on the older side while Kokichi and Kaito were the youngest of the group. Going off of Kodaka's tweet, Kokichi would have been 17 during the killing game since he turned 20 in 2020. And since Kokichi's death portrait was towards the end of the line and his birthday is in June while Kaito's is in April, Kokichi was the youngest of them all, meaning everyone else was 18+. Kaito probably turned 18 before he died or maybe he didn't, idk.

Or maybe their portraits appear as when they died. Like rantaro died first so whenever there is a debate scrum rantaro would be the first dead to appear after an alive person. And as more and more people died, you can see that the dead people that died later is always after someone who died early on. For example korekiyo portraits in the debate scrum number 5 is behind Angie portraits. Or also kaede portraits is behind Rantaro portraits. So that would mean that kaito and Kokichi portraits are at the end of line not because of their age, but because they died last. That’s my theory.
Im guessing there 18 to 21 yrs old because of their mature minds, instict, and perspective in a murder crime. Thats what I believe.

Honestly. There's so much drama around the game and fandom when there literally doesn't have to be, so many people are constantly making a deal of little things and putting shame on the work and fans.
Stop me if I'm wrong but crossdressing and being trans IS different right? Just because you crossdress doesn't mean you identify as your opposite gender and likewise just because you are trans does not mean you have to wear clothes matching the other gender to identify as such. Crossdressing can be as simple as "I just feel more comfortable wearing these types of clothes despite it belonging more to men/women", transgenderism on the other hand is all about identity, you feel like you were born the wrong gender, that you identify better as a he or she. It seems even more complex than the broad definition I've given.
Point is, at no point in Chihiro's story does it imply he genuinely prefers being called a girl. Quite the opposite as his backstory revolves around hiding from what we call "toxic masculanity" by keeping his biological sex a secret, only to feel even worse about himself. The character arc itself was all about becoming stronger, more confident about himself so that he feels comfortable identifying as a man, no matter what people say about his frail body/mindset. And if you need a blatant proof Alter Ego always referred to Chihiro as "master", meaning he always stuck his belief to identify as a man. Crossdressing was only an escape from a horrible blatant abusive mindset he grew up with, it's only after he grew confident that he proudly revealed his true gender as seen in Danganronpa S, to over 50 people at once.
It's annoying that people still mistreats Chihiro's character as "trans" representation when more accurately, he represents what toxic masculanity does to people. It makes them feel inferior, unfit and not proud of being called "men" if they don't go by the books. His story and character growth is a lesson that no matter what people say about you, only you should be able to tell who you are, man or woman it does not matter, just be yourself.
And those pricks that still call Chihiro trans is precisely telling us what is wrong with people. If you dress like a girl then you are and will always be a girl according to these people, even if you yourself don't agree they would tell you "you're trans you just don't realize it yet, you're just afraid to say it." Screw them I say. I don't think Chihiro's story is badly written in anyway, people only misunderstands its depht and what the themes are.
Yes, Cross dressing and being Transgender are two different things, I love to cross dress but that doesn’t make me Transgender, I was born a female and while I enjoy masculine things, I still feel comfortable as a female
Danganronpa is literally a game about a high school student bringing the whole world into war and forcing students to play a killing game where you have to murder or sacrifice a friend to survive. We have characters that aren't normal because why would they be when the whole series isn't? This isn't some slice of life or a heartfelt anime, of course there are gonna be some problems in it, but there's no point in making a big deal out of it, is there?
I see Chihiro mentioned, and all I can think is that he is Naoto all over again. Both these characters are used to say the game, community, and the devs are transphobic. In reality that are twisting up their character arcs to label them as the wrong type. Chihiro is worried about how non masculine he is and wants to be more manly, Naoto wants to be a detective but (in many places) that is a more male oriented job and any female tends to be discriminated in it so Naoto is worried she won't be respected as much as a female detective. For the rest of these things, I either don't remember them or never saw them as bad as the people against Danganronpa see them. I honestly just think they see the fanbase and assume they act terrible BECAUSE of the game and are purposely looking only for anything remotely bad in the series to build their hate on

Based off what I know, Yasuhiro Hagakure is the only adult student throughout the Danganronpa series. He says so in his introduction at the beginning of the game.
No actually to my knowledge they went into the school when they were 17 (except for hiro he was 21) but then they find out they had been there for 2 whole years and just got their minds wiped so they should be around 18-19 now

Honestly one of the main reasons people don't like Danganronpa has to do with the toxicity that came with a large fanbase. However what people fail to realize is the fact that every game or media has a fanbase with there on toxicity and it does not reflect the game as a whole. If anything, it is the people within the community who are toxic, and I hate it when people stray away from these games because of its toxic players. I t sucks and it really does bother me that we have people like this everywhere.
Imagine completely missing the point that every Danganronpa character is meant to be an embodiment of a STEREOTYPE. ON PURPOSE. You can’t flame the series and call it flawed when the flaws were put there to prove a point. Kids need to be banned from the internet.
The way each character is written is that they’re so enveloped in their talents that it becomes their personality, which fleshes out the negative trait they already had with no room for them to better themselves because they’re too focused on their “gift”. None of them are meant to be realistic, they’re all extremes like the fictional archetypes that they are. Why do you think they’re all willing to kill someone the second something doesn’t go well?

fr, I missed it when none bashed on other people for being daganronpa fans.
Meanwhile with the characters' ages not being stated, many of them actively look like they're fairly old. Ryoma looks like mid 20's, Korekiyo is probably early 20's, and so on. The only few exceptions would be Himiko and Kokichi, who are intentionally pretty young looking for a reason. Himeko for her to be that young witch stereotype of young anime girls in a magic school. Then Kokichi seems to be representing the young character who looks innocent but isn't. I've played V3 as well and there aren't any references to age at all, just that oh they're trapped in a highschool. The Love Hotel thing also heavily hints that they aren't minors, bcs otherwise the game would've been blacklisted a LONG time ago from pretty much everywhere.
Food for thought: Kokichi might have been the original mastermind. Then, when everyone was pitted against him, Tsumugi made a grab for power (or maybe Maki)
But there's no proof of that.

I feel pretty bad, because as a franchise and storytelling, DR is actually really well crafted story. Recently I got myself into a big search of 10 days for some "normal" or at least funny and entertaining DR content on the platform, but for these 10 days the results were really, really not well... I'm not saying that I can do a better job, for fuck sake my best idea was to make Komaeda say "you have no bitches" with the thud sound effect, but at least it doesn't have something that toxic or always something to do with a certain character/ship. There were a few sane fans over TikTok, making character analysis or some goofy edits or jokes, but as I said from most of my 10 day research... It was a very few in place full of cringe, people being overly attached to a certain ship and insulting anyone who doesn't like it or stuff and much more stupid things. I'm sorry for the paragraph, but I'm so frustrated, because one of those cringey or bad TikToks gets viral sometimes and some people JUDGE an entire fanbase based on this particular clip... That's another thing that makes me kind of angry.

Also, some people really need to realize that characters won't always be perfect, and can have flaws just like normal people, and sometimes do things that are morally questionable. I can understand blatant discrimination being rightfully frowned upon, but every character being a morally perfect Mary Sue would make for a terrible story.
I think the reason why most people believe that the V3 cast are minors is because in the prologue they were shown to be wearing school uniforms

It's a fucking art style to make him look more mysterious and menacing based on what he's currently saying. It's like how manga takes advantage of its monochrome colours to make more creative visuals/panels.
So I'm an art student, I have a minor in art history, I've seen actual black face and that Kokichi sprite is nowhere near it. People are so damn sensitive these days, please get a grip on reality. If im not wrong it is stated TWO times that theyre teenagers/highschool students (not sure what was said its more likely that teenagers, but one of the times it was kokichi saying it on the prologue)
highschool takes place from being about 15 to 18 (correct me if im wrong, in my country we dont have that system), so theyre most likely NOT adults, or at least not everyone in v3.
Rantaro has already been in a killing game before and its possible he might have survived multiple killing games (lets say a max of 3), so theres a very high chance of him being an adult.

I should of mentioned that in my video, but I meant that the ending made things about the characters all complicated, it's unsure if you HAVE to be a high schooler to enter the killing game or not, again very complicated because the v3 ending just messes it up. Plus as I said in the video, wouldn't tsumugi also be lumped with rantaro if she is referred to as the "staff" meaning how do we know how long she has been working there for? Very confusing. @@MandyLovely oh true, i made the comment before getting to the tsumugi part but youre right! its pretty much stated that you have to be a highschooler to enter hopes peak academy, so i guess it makes sense for that to be the rule to enter the danganronpa games as its more accurate to the original idea, but none of that is confirmed (and i doubt it will ever be)

While they do say multiple times that they are teenagers, that only happens during the killing game, which is supposedly some sort of heavily fictional reality show in V3's universe, making the age of the characters ambiguous. For all we know, they could be 21, 18, or 13 and we would never really know. Still, the Lovesuit events are supposed to be a part of the reality show as well, so it's unlikely for them to be under 18. (on a different note, who the hell authorized the lovesuit events?!?)

I COMPLETELY disagree with the Kokichi sprite. I NEVER for a millisecond thought something like that seeing his sprite! I find it suspicious that people just jump to "black face!!" Because of a common occurrence in anime with darkened figures..I don't think that way done poorly at ALL, I just think people see what they want to see when they have a cause. THIS!!! I feel like had Angie stayed alive longer she would've posed a serious threat and might've actually been more of a candidate for the role of the Antagonist than Kokichi was. She was able to get anybody on her side so easily wheres Kokichi only had Gonta. Could you imagine Angie as the main antagonist? Terrifying.

Rantaro is always one of the first death portraits see you being lined up, which means he's on the older side, while you always see Kaito and Kokichi's being the last ones, meaning that they are the youngest of the group.
If we take Kodaka's tweet, which ANYONE CAN GO LOOK UP FOR THEMSELVES IF THEY DON'T BELIEVE IT, Kokichi was 20 in 2020, meaning he was 17 during the killing game. Now since his birthday is in June while Kaito's birthday is in April, we can conclude that Kokichi is the youngest of the group and thus, everyone else was already 18 during the killing game (because, for example, Rantaro's birthday is in Oct so he would be 18 or possibly 19 or whatever if people wanna believe in Tsumugi's lies...I personally think she was brainwashed to think she set everything up and was also a victim but that's just my personal theory). I don't like danganronpa at all but that's no reason for me to attack people who do like it or try to cancel it. I played all games and watched the series because my friends liked it a lot and I think there's a lot of harmful problem the game has, even more in the anime. But that's the creators's faults and not the one playing/watching. Enjoy things and understand it still has problems, it's as easy as that. Separate the "art" from the "artist" as they usually say. 2- The game is rated M. Yes, it could have been handled better. I think frankly Kotoko's character is one of the best in the game. Her portrayal of trauma (the triggers, the inflicting on others, I mean she's a villain she's not a good guy) and post traumatic growth (in Danganronpa S, she is trying to leave that life behind and seems to be doing a lot better for herself) is excellent. If you can't handle discussion of CSA in a video game then turn it off. In a game about children hating adults, what's a more concrete reason?
3 - Monaca is a villain. She faked her disability so her family would stop beating the shit out of her. Pity points are powerful. "There's nothing more powerful than a pitiful child" - Monaca. The pity points are not meant to come from us. They're meant to come from the family in the game. Also. She's a villain. Don't follow her example. I can't think of any other characters faking a disability.
4 - this one i agree with. Toko's DID is another tired introvert/serial killer flip. I'm sure at the time of writing/creating the game (idk when exactly genocider was added to the game after Distrust but it had to be like 2007/2008/2009) I'm sure it was a hot topic banger idea. Nowadays it didn't age well. I'm sure half of the points on this list are "this is problematic NOW" without taking into account the date of creation of the first game. 5 - Racism. Hmmmm. (I guess I have to preface this by saying I'm Black and can only speak on Black racism. I know a bit about colorism in Japan based on *actual research* not just watching anime 🗿 i wrote a paper in college about it)
Definitely Japanese colorism within the games. More specifically, Aoi being tanned (you wouldn't know she's only TAN and not actually a darker skinned person without a lot of context) and also the ditzy sexpot is an issue for me, but she's also a strong character despite that. Celeste is the character in the game supposedly from a different race. Nothing offensive here that I could tell.
Idk if Akane is tan or if she's actually darker skinned, but her character of being a kinda dumb, instinct driven (literally in the game they call her a BEAST 🗿) is really gross. BUT. I think she's better off than Aoi because, even though she has a pretty curvaceous body, she is only highly sexualized by the creators of the game, not the characters. I think they mention her being "sexy" maybe 4 or 5 times in the ENTIRE game. Sonia is the foreign character here. Besides her not understanding Japanese very well (when she got accepted into a JAPANESE school and is fluent in 30 LANGUAGES, NONE OF THEM BEING JAPANESE FOR SOME REASON DAM- on second thought they're probably all European languages and dialects.) she definitely gives off the dumb foreigner vibe at first. It just makes me sad that she falls victim to the "hahah funny dumb blonde girl say peeenis" thing several times. But, as the game progresses, she changes a lot.
Something I never see anyone mention (I guess this is an issue with the translation and dubbing) is Sonia's statement at the end of the game. You know, when you give hope via IV injection to everyone and she says something really poetic and beautiful. Compare her first chapter interactions of stilted, textbook Japanese to this fluent beautiful poetic statement. The glow-up is real 🥲 also Teruteru is racist as fuck but I still love him 💀💀💀 but he's racist in such a weird way that I don't know how to describe it.

Yeah, there's moments like Man's Fantasy and Man's Nut that are optional to see sexualized stuff. The love hotel is also optional. But that's another whole issue. The sexualization of all characters in Japanese anime and games, but especially minors, is a huge problem that I don't know how to fix. Sex sells. I'm sure that's a reason people bought Danganronpa. I'm sure people buy games all the time with the thought of seeing something sexy.

If I’m being honest, Dangaronpa gets alot of hate than most anime’s. Like not everything is perfect. Dangaronpa gets so much hate for the stupidest stuff. Some people are saying that there’s not a lot of black characters and most of them are white. Like I get it there isn’t really that much black people in most anime’s but that doesn’t give you a reason to hate it. What matters is the storyline, The characters, The plot. That’s what really matters. I really like Dangaronpa and will most likely not get bored of it. I think it’s a really good anime, I really love the characters and the storyline. I mean I’m not really hating, people can have their opinions but some of them don’t even make sense. I love the ops, the characters, the storyline, etc. I love pretty much everything about it. Are the characters not sixteen? I'm British and that is the age of consent where I live . I thought the characters were 16/17. So to me it's not as weird. Anyway the mostly problematic ones are Tsumigi and Korekiyo's. The love hotel scenes are more and less problematic depending on where you live.

In DR 1 and 2, it's definitely canon that they're all adults since they got 2-3 years of their memories in Hopes Peak wiped. In DRV3, they're probably from 17-21
V3 is the only one of the three main games where the ages are unconfirmed. Yasuhiro says that he’s 20/21 (depending on if you’re playing the Japanese or American version) at the start of the game, but by that point three years have already passed and he doesn’t remember that so he would be 24/25 in the actual game. However this probably doesn’t matter because it’s already canon that the characters are adults. Even if it wasn’t though, Yasuhiro’s age would be canon and we could’ve used his age to roughly determine everyone else’s age. This even works for the second game’s cast as well since they’re a grade above the first game’s cast so it’s not too far fetched to assume that they’re all around a year older. The only real question mark is, again, V3 because nobody’s age is confirmed. The only real way we could determine the ages of anyone in V3, and this is a very flimsy way of doing it, is to take into account the fact that Rantaro and Tsumugi have been in other killing games. Even then, it doesn’t reveal much, all it would reveal is that they might possibly be a little older than the rest of the V3 cast

Point 3, If it were a good character who did that and it was ignored/overlooked or shown as a good deed it would be bad. But a villian did it, showing it as evil.
Point 5, Aoi, Sakura, and Angie are very intelligent. Sakura seems very wise, Aoi gets better in the anime and her whole Chapter 4 plan was AMAZING!! Angie manipulates almost the whole group at a few points and it's not just dark-skinned characters somewhat portrayed as dumb.

Point 13, I have seen the video where this is said. They say this and when I asked reddit and multiple other Danganronpa communities if this was true, they said it wasn't. I have a bilingual friend who played both English and Japanese versions, they also denies this claim. It was just a Kaito hate video and they lied to get people on their side.
Also take into account, not every character is perfect. Also this is Japan so some of the things in Japanese stories aren't always something we agree with or like and we can't hate on them just because they didn't make something good for the audience they intended it for.
