    Another great video, thanks!
I got my dirt grater built, it seems to work pretty well but there is a little learning curve.
I will be using it a lot in the next few weeks and hopefully will learn what it likes and doesn't like.

You can pull the packing out of the cylinders when using the bucket like that back dragging.

Thanks for the response Matt. I appreciate your input. I want to review this with our service technicians and get their opinions. I agree that you should never bulldoze going forward with the bucket in that position because I believe you are correct. But backwards at low gear and idle there is no way for the cylinder to over extend. It would make sense that if the cylinder fails it would blow a seal first and the cylinder rod would go back into the cylinder. I will definitely get back to you! Thanks so much!

@@EverythingGreenTractors It's not going to over extend. Just the opposite. If you catch your bucket on anything hard, the cylinder will fold up on you. The power of the tractor and the opposing hydraulic pressure are greater than the strength of the cylinder or ram. It happened to me on my backhoe and it's more common on loader buckets. All you have to do is lessen the angle a little bit and you'll be fine. Since you have a backhoe, use that to loosen the ground first.

@@garyiannone8925 Thanks for responding! I agree it is possible to bend the cylinder rams by back dragging, but pull the packing out is next to impossible as the packing is going the opposite direction to pull out as is suggested in the comment that I was responding to. Thanks for the response!

Interesting video. Like many of the comments I was a little nervous watching you back drag with the bucket tilted that far. I guess that comes from watching Tractor Time with Tim. I don't have a lot of experience so I don't have anything to compare it against other than comments I have seen over the years. Maybe you could do a future video focusing on the cylinders? With your experience as a salesman and your access to the maintenance side you could probably come up with some really good content. I'm going to have to go find my manual and see if I can find some the references you were talking about. Thanks for the videos! It makes me want to get out on my 1025R!

Thanks so much! I really have been researching this and keep asking anyone who repairs tractors including people who have been in the business for over 30 years. At least with the people I spoken with it is not a common repair they run into. All agree a cylinder ram can bend if extend them all the way and you hit something with force, or the bucket timing bar on the loader is out of alignment and you tweak it with force on one side, or you have a single cylinder and you hit something with force to the left or right of the bucket, but at idle and slow and cautious as I am in the video the probability is low. I love watching Tractor Time with Tim and the only time I am aware he bent a cylinder was on the backhoe but he really messes with the hydraulic pressure on his tractors which I don’t recommend. To quote Tim “When you use equipment, you’re going to have trouble”. This is definitely something everyone has an opinion on! Thanks for the suggestion I definitely want to be careful in what is said! Thanks again!

Phil, I'm new to the tractor world and I mentioned in a previous video that I had a 2007 John Deere 2305. I was always told that I could bend the piston shafts on my hydraulic cylinders by having the bucket tilted that far. But I just watched you do it with no problems. So, it won't hurt to do it occasionally? And after you said that the bucket on the 1025r was 53 inches wide I had to check the width on the bucket on my 200cx loader and it was 53" also. I was happy about that. I just wanted to say that your videos are top notch and I'll be waiting for your next one. God bless and have a wonderful day. 👍👍🙂

I am going to check with my service technicians to get their opinions. I really never scrape unless I am in low gear and idle or just above it. You can damage your tractor just about any way there is but you can see I am being cautious during the shooting of this video. I would definitely review your owners manual and see what it says. Mine makes no mention of it for or against, but it does warn about other techniques that may damage the cutting edge. My personal experience is guys come in all of the time with blown seals (usually with larger tractors) from over doing something but I can’t think of a time I have seen a bent cylinder. Not to say it doesn’t happen because it does but it doesn’t seem to be a common issue with these 25 horsepower tractors. I definitely would never attach chains to any of the cylinders to pull something. Thanks for the question!

So I checked two things the owners manual of the current loaders and with the technicians who work here, and had them watch the video and they pretty much agreed. At low gear and with the tractor just above idle you should be fine. People get in trouble when they are at high rpms and continuously ram something. The Deere owners manual does not make specific reference to it. The second part of the reference to damaging the cylinder can be quality of cylinder. I could not find very many videos of bent cylinders on loaders except for much larger loaders and in most cases it is a much older tractor and typically not a Deere. I did find a lot of videos with bent backhoe cylinders as it is way more common there. As with any activity with a tractor use common sense, don’t force things and know the limits of your tractor. Thanks again!

I believe the thought process in potential damage to the hydraulic cylinders has to do with the extension. Normally, the piston and the seals at the end of the cylinder are a good distance apart spreading the contact points and increasing the lateral strength. With the cylinders at full extension, the contact points are right up against one another allowing the bucket to affect more torque against the shaft. If you hit a stump or a big rock in that position and it tries to force the shaft back into the cylinder, there exists the potential for it to go sideways and bend the everloving crap out of everything. That is purely anecdotal second hand guessing though so take it with a grain of silica.

Thanks for the response I agree. What I was referring to was the ability to pull out the packing of the cylinder as was suggested. Thanks again!
