This channel is really maturing. Makes sense as your game and viewership expands. I do hope the smiles and laughs will still be a part of the journey. The cheerful demeanor is what separated you from the rest of the pack.
Great advice. I credit my work on my chipping game with finally breaking 80 years ago. I chipped in for birdie on 18 today. Saved my butt after pulling my approach terribly.
Hey Gen... I was thinking your new intro was amazing... until I realized it was just an ad for the Beatles documentary.... then when I saw the real new intro it was BETTER than the Beatles.😍 In the 2-3 months until I can golf again I will try to remember this lesson ❄☃ ☠
sh*t.....I played today and super wet here in Portland. I couldn't get closer that 4' for a par, the greens were TOO wet. I went 9-over 9-holes. I need to practice the underhand move. But we haven't been able to play for 2-months. Today it was 60*. Those white jeans ....we are in love with your lessons. I needed this today.
Great video with simple instruction, the landing zone in chipping is massive and somethings I really focus on with my pupil. I love the demo on the pitch shots, very visual and easy to understand.
This channel got upgraded. New short professional introduction. Great content with a beautiful host. There was a good amount of research or sweats from working hard. The subject is really important to amateur like me. Thank you for sharing.
I use my 58 for everything. I put a piece of vinyl on the shaft of the club and wrote down all my carry distances. I have 2 sets of numbers: 1 with the club face SQUARE, and another with the face open 30 degrees. So whether I want to hit a normal chip or a lob I have 4 carry distances for each method. This will drop your handicap really fast! I lowered mine at least 3-4 shots last year. When you learn to putt specific speeds combined with chipping like this you will literally start chipping them in and getting up and down to save those pars and bogeys.
This is gold, especially you pacing off your chip distances to prove the point... so thanks! 6HC (+/-1) for the last year or two... My goal to be a sub-5 HC is eluding me due to chipping & putting (33 putt avg, 59% driving and 46%GIR). I'm very streaky where my chipping is solid OR my putting is solid and I'll shoot in the 70's but if they're both off, back to a low/mid-80's round which is very frustrating. I took 5 lessons last year which helped mostly with my iron play but your explanations and suggestions around chipping/pitching is the best I've seen. I practice once per week and play once a week on avg. I will definitely spend more time chipping using your technique as I've also recently adopted your putting practice suggestions... I have no doubt I can improve these two parts of my game thanks to your help/videos.
You nailed it, when you prioritized tempo first. Soooooo important, if you wanna be consistent. Being able to repeat tempo is one of the most important things in golf PERIOD, in my opinion. For me…. If I try to swing too easy, or slow, I’ll hit it left. Just the opposite though, if I turn, or swing faster, it usually goes right.
Haven't been here in a while Gen... but I'm always trying to find your name on the mini to Symetra Tours hoping to see your successful progress toward the LPGA... (if that's still your goal?)!! Great lesson on chipping... and for a minute there I was thinking "why do people call everything from 100 yards in, 'chipping'? Chipping are shots AROUND the green and pitching is shots TO the green!" Then you acknowledged the difference!! And I said, "see? She knows the difference!!"
For 90% of my shots below 100 yards I use my 50 degree. That includes chipping. Everyone has their favorite club but for me, the 50 is just right. I can hit it high or low with this club. I like getting so used to a club it is your old friend and you can really get them close to the hole. I pitch with a bit of wrist but chip with no wrist. Like Gen, I like to chip with the ball back, enough to use the club bounce without digging. Move ball forward to hit higher, but get used to the ball in the same position for more shots. Those high shots are totally different you need to practice them too, same swing different ball position.
Yup this video is for me. I comfortable from 80 and out but once it gets under that I start losing confidence. A 10 to 30 chip is my no fly zone and honestly I will putt it if grass allows me
The new opening rocks! You've also changed the name of the channel by using your full name which seems like a smart move. Good chipping advice also, I do all my chipping with the same club ( a 58 degree ) and just change ball position to regulate height and roll out.
Well done, Gen, excellent advice. I have done this for some years now and it has really improved my short game. I actually have noted down the distances, to remember them when I do the drill again in a couple of weeks time. I also try to remember some key reference distances when I go on the course, just as you said. That really works.
Great video and let’s get more people working on their crafty chip shots! I agree from personal experience that having confidence and decent chipping/pitching skills as a beginner/intermediate level golfer truly is such a useful tool to have (after always ending up in bad positions I knew if i made a plan to get really good at those little awkward chip shots from terrible lies it would pay off). It’s just a matter of making the time to practice!
Thanks for making this video! It seems like an easy and obvious thing we should all be doing in a warm up, but often overlooked. Great content as always! Make more pre-round warm up vids they are gold.
OK now i love you... the clock analogy is money...... im on it.. thank you so much.. i loved you already .. im just sayin... that was soooooo informative, useful
I use this exact method. Then I have the yardage for choking down 1 inch and then blade open 20 degrees and open 40 degrees. I've got all the yardages down to about 3 yards apart. (From 2 iron to 60d wedge). Hard to remember all of them so I have a little matrix printed out and sealed in plastic which I pull out on probably half of the shots. It works. Think about needing to hit a really low shot under a tree 150 yards. I know the exact set-up with a 4 iron that hits that distance and meets the low angle of attack required - 8:00 choked down 1 inch.
Thank you. Another great video. New intro is cool! My golfing goal is to get good enough that if I ever get the chance to golf a round with a professional, such as yourself, I don't embarrass myself! Keep up the great work! I have learned a lot from you so far!
Love the new intro. Great video too, Thanks for the tips....Happy Birthday btw, I think it's coming up in a few days...Hope it's a great one. All the best Gen. :-) 👍
You covered the most important one that I need to work on my chipping!!! Can you explain the second shot like mid iron from 200-134 what to do your thought process and how to practice those shots?? Thank you in advance
Great drill. We call it a ladder drill, spacing like the rungs of a ladder. I also use it as a distance control drill in putting with my junior golfers.
Great lesson. This comes into play for me with On in 4 and if With a good chip Incan get it close to put in the hole. That would be aaaaaaaamazing. Biggie on every hole would make my score card look so so so so good
Great new intro Gen , Also i am keeping this advice for me as i need it Lol 😊 (great advice and good tip as well) i will be trying the 8 to 4 fore sure thanks Gen
Fantastic intro Gen. Love it! Love the focus on chipping and it is is such a great time to focus on it with my game🙂👍🏻 Going for clusters in ‘22! Thank you 🙏
Seems like a long time. Good to see you again. Your format continues to get more professional as does your game and fitness level. Would love to see more of how you are training for the next level of your development.
I've been trying to lock in my swing consistency; 8 to 4 arc and same tempo. I don't allow myself to vary from this swing. I then use club selection to achieve the desired distance . I choose from 9, P, G, 54, 56 and 60 degree to hit the right distance. It seems to work for me. My body only needs to remember one chipping swing and the clubs do the rest.
That’s an awesome way to do it as well:) like we all know with golf, it’s not going to be the same for everyone so finding what works for you is important and it seems like you have!

Yeaih, finally a class tip for determining swing strength for selected distances. I'll go practise that right away.....Thank you.
I hope to see you on the LPGA. And after you retire from that- you can be a world class teacher!
I loose so many strokes to poor chipping. This video has inspired me to get serious about practicing chipping because now I have a system. Thanks!
Awesome to hear! Hope it helps and that your chipping will be your strong suite soon 💪🏼💪🏼
watching you play is a lot more relaxing than actually playing
Thanks. Since I started kicking my wedge my chipping has greatly improved.
Love the new intro, Gen. Well done. Great advice on distance control. I’m going to try this in the morning during practice.
