Trip through Cyprus - Mediterranean journey | DW Documentary

- As legend would have it, Aphrodite was born here - on Cyprus. The sea on its southern coastline is said to be the font of all love. The island is one of the oldest cradles of civilization in the Mediterranean: The Greeks, Egyptians, Romans, Ottomans and British all lived here at some point in history.
No sooner has our presenter Sineb El Masrar arrived on the island than she sets off for the Troodos mountains, where she tastes some prize-winning Cypriot wine.
Next stop on the journey is Ayia Napa, for a meeting with Louis Hadjioannou. The marine biologist is looking for an intruder that really shouldn’t be here at all: the lionfish. Climate change has lured the creature to the Mediterranean Sea.
Just as in many places throughout the world, the Cypriots set great store by good food and drink. For Roddy Damalis, who owns the restaurant "TaPiatakia”, the focus is on breathing new life into traditional dishes by combining them with unusual ingredients.
After that, the presenter heads for the beach. More than four million tourists visited Cyprus in 2019, often bringing mountains of plastic waste along with them. The environmental protection organization Akti campaigns against the increase and the consequences of plastic waste on beaches - by giving talks in schools, for example. During the summer months, student curriculums also include beach clean-ups. Sineb El Masrar talks to Charis Theodorou about the campaign and the microplastics problem blighting the Mediterranean.

Living in Cyprus since 2009 and this documentary makes it look so glamorous. It's such a nice country to live in *if you have money* otherwise keep your distance
It's not a country. It's two countries.
@@HOXHOXHOX the Turkish occupation is not a country.
@@HOXHOXHOX wrong

The Island of Cyprus is a independent State since 1960s.
I have learned to drive in Larnaka!!! Spent 10months in Cyprus….ive got the craziest memories from there.
Thank you Cyprus
I have spent 2 years in Larnaca 1999 to 2001 .. amazing place to live . Very peaceful ...wish to visit again. Thanks for the video
i lived in cyprus in 1993 for 6 months no words the beauty of it i want to move there for the rest of my life i have left an just take it easy an enjoy it once again
Cyprus is the nature's gift.
I have just come back from Cyprus - it’s a beautiful cosmopolitan island
The Greek or Turkish muslim colonisation side?
@@ausboy2281 never been or want to go to the North
Been there and it is by far the greenest of the islands. Very beautiful and the water looks like a gem.
Not more green than Corfu
Thanks for this amazing documentary! 💜

great place! keep up the excellent work!
Very beautiful! Cyprus is a beautiful Middle Eastern country.
Loving Cyprus!!!
Gorgeous Cyprus ❤
According to Ancestry I have some 8% DNA from Cyprus, the Greek side. Love to visit this gorgeous place.
Wow, I learned about Cyprus when I was in high school because I like world history and now I saw how beautiful this country is through this documentary amazing .😊
right now its snowing like crazy in the mountains - thats the best.
@@kloppskalli🤩 wow really!
The beach waters look so beautiful, divine!!! I hope we get to visit Cyprus and the other islands around. I wish we will have good weather and get to enjoy it all! Wishing you all lots of health, love, and peace always. Thanks for sharing it with us! E.F.
sad, arabic speaking in cyprus are going to extinct soon, arabic rule cyprus under part of levant/syam province, then fall into byzantine back then ottoman, most of them are Arab Christian, Arab Christian in cyprus very similar to Lebanese arab, most of Arab Muslim in cyprus are assimilated into turkish speaking, but maltese are still spoke kind of Arabic evolved into Maltese.
For Eastern Mediterranean region, I just love Greek Rhode island. It's full of history from the crusaders time. Rhode is only 90 minutes by speed ferry from fetheye Turkey. I took a side trip from Turkey to Rhode, spend 5 beautiful days, there are free roaming peacocks 🦚 on the mountain. I returned to Turkey by speed ferry to Marmaris and continue the rest of my Turkish adventures in July 2019

You are a good team, you create very good films.
Wow beautiful Natural place, beaches and landscapes, The presenter is also a beautiful Angel, I love you 😍🤩🥰😘
Place to watch💕💕💕
Excellent 👍
The best country ♥ great content
This documentary didn't mention, but Cyprus is a financial hub, where the rich "park"their money. One of my classmates at Michigan State University was from Cyprus 😊
Yes but this is good that’s why we have good jobs here
I live in Cyprus since 2018, very nice documentary.
Your motherland sir ?
I know Cyprus well. When it comes to wine I use Commandria as a datum against which to measure.
Need to correct you ,at 7:26 place shown in video is Paphos not Aiyanappa.
You showed Paphos when you talked about visiting Ayia Napa 🤔😃
Another nice Mediterranean Journey series Cyprus.
Nice marine life, nice beach.
Ma'am, you are rightly saying Cyprus geographically close to Asia but politically close to Europe.
Thank you DW.
They hate Hindus btw
"geographically close to Asia" Bro, IT IS a middle eastern country. What do you mean "close" lmao.
Sineb is so beautiful :)
Awesome documentary... especially kids comments at beach cleaning..
Thanks for watching and for the feedback!
That cook looked Exactly like Kojax ...
I saw Lysistrata in the ancient theatre in Paphos......wonderfull experience as a Dutch ..then young woman Our taxidriver didn't want to bring us there....too far away...but he joined us and translated the jokes.! B.t.w...on beautiful days there were many black clothed granies setting on the beaches...calling DIMITRI...and all kind of other names of course...!.....ELLA ETHO....(come here !!)
And I was in Levcosha on the point where Turkey began......there were many hostilities and suïcides there...!! And even between Cypriots there were big political differences....!! Anyways..a beautiful experience
The golden words, for those who understand and feel what Lefteris said "We are people of the land. The biggest percentage of quality is made by nature, and the rest is a human touch."
You mention Ayia Napa and show footage of Paphos.
I live in Limassol it’s good place and people are chilly
Go back to your country, I'm from Limassol too and Limassol isn't even a Cypriot city anymore. Full of immigrants that don't even speak Greek...
Paenne sta anathema, fie pou ti xora mas
Very informative. It gives a glimpse of Cyprus....its people, culture, monuments, food and way of life. I didn't even knew that Cyprus is divided into North and South....thanks for educating viewers like me.
Is not divided into North and South. Is divided into Cyprus Republic and the occupied part of Cyprus. Occupied by the turks since 1974
@@blueisland24 Blame the Turks when you can't blame EOKA and EOKA-B....
@@A.Musa76 EOKA was great. They fought for the freedom of Cyprus against the British imperialism, but turkishCypriots fought against greekCypriots together with the British. Weird ha? Blaim TMT too and turkey which from 1960 they started sending guns to TMT the terror organization (turkishCypriots)
This is great Cyprus! I love the view, the point of view of people to care for the environment. The churches and mosque! The totality of the documentary, I really love it! I wish I could visit that place soon!
I just hope some org or someone can sponsor me😅😊😊
Thanks again DW! 😊😊😊
It is a middle eastern country, obviously it was gonna have churches and mosques.
7:24 that's not Ayia Napa, that's Paphos on the other end of the Island! :))
7:24 You are showing Paphos, not Ayia Napa here
DW is the Northern part occupied by Turkey or a declared Republic(not recognized by any country except Turkey) so these are two different things.
Ana de Armas' sister? jk Cyprus looks like a wonderful place to experience and think of all the history involved and sites to explore!
ty
The Republic of Cyprus was created in 1960 and not 1974.
22:10 Llittering and illegal dumping is quite common, so the island looks like a dump in many places, unfortuately it isnt the beaches only.
From Pakistan, Beautiful Cyprus and a fine video. Thank you DW.
The most beautiful island in the world especially pafos town
Εισαι Παφίτισσα;
I am from Cyprus and while yes our Island is certainly gorgeous it is not the MOST beautiful imo, i have lived in Honolulu, Hawaii and i have been to Tahiti in French Polynesia , those Islands are far more beautiful imo
Sometimes I am wondering why many journalist "forget" to mentioned that Cyprus is divided due to Turkish occupation after the invasion in 1974 ?
this one didnt. they forgot to say why it was occupied though.
It is divided due to the Greek Cypriots illegal attempts at violently ethnically cleansing the Turkish Cypriots whilst trying to illegally unite with Greece. That is the cause of the division. Look no further then thus.
Beautiful Cyprus Love from India ❤❤
This seems more like a tourism bureau production or a travel show than a documentary. Conflict history seemed to be included mostly as a architectural curiosity. Follow a few dodgy foreign businessmen that have been flocking in faster ever since Brexit took British crown dependencies out of the EU, or just tell me what it's like to be poor in Cyprus. Vineyard owners or professional chefs having something to taste does not belong in a DW documentary, everyone knows vineyard owners and professional chefs have something to taste.
I am surprised as well. It shows things you could see in any other country - winemakers, chefs, bike tours, beaches… This is far bellow DW standards.
absolutely agree
First wach from somalia
Valletta inverted on 0:14.
Long ago...around 1980.... I was underways swimming to an island (rock) in front of the Limassol coast....!! Half the distantie towards that little Island....or rock actually...I suďdenly thought of the fish that could be swimming below me...like barbounia or small sharks....And swam back immediately....!!
Gerdie, thank you for a silly story
Very close and similar to Syrian Mediterranean cost
You spent 1/3 of the video promoting someone’s wine!
Cyprus is quite beautiful... Rich History, Architectural; a cultural journey without voicing a polarized existence as a country...
Seeing that there's no perfect scenario, DW Documentaries are a good balancing act.👏
The winemaking couple 👫 have a fabulous 🏠 & vibe 🥰.
DW , another country called Ireland. Having similar situation. I am expecting similar documentary from there. With the similar language used. Occupied etc. If you dare 🤣😂
they dont have guts to say such things when it comes to Great Britain :)
Is this video available of German language? Because she speak German

I want to visit this country
Nah, we don't want you here. Visit other countries
Very beautiful country, full of rich history and great food. Have you been to the middle east before? I would also recommend Lebanon, Its very close to Cyprus, you can even see Lebanon from Cyprus.
Did you also mention about its 2states or just a biased?
They mention the division, and do a bike tour on both sides. I thought it seemed perfectly unbiased during that portion - but I suppose there is actually a strong bias since this is about the WHOLE island of Cyprus but no North/Turkish Cypriot representation at all, just a few minutes by bicycle. I love the north because it does not have the level of tourism and commerce, it is quite untouched by modernity, which i prefer. It would have been nice to show that, telling a more complete story.
Great great great but divission of cyprus was not a good idea in my opinion
Is this a Cyprus documentary or a wine one? 🤦🏻♂️
Tell me you are usaian without telling me you are usaian

O Zineb don’t drink that !
Boring. I want to see cypress and you are showing me details if a wine for so long in the beginning.

She has a little German accent which is very funny
god she is gorgeous!
It's brilliant to take a Greek Cypriot person obviously full of hate to the Turkish Cypriot part with his extremely "unbiased" comments.
It was odd that they mainly showed terrible part of Turkish Cyprus.
Yeah go ask the Ukrainians how they are feeling about the Russian occupiers. They love them.
YOU STOLE OUR LAND AND LIVE IN OUR HOUSE AND YOU WANT US TO TALK NICE ABOUT THE OCCUPIERS AND DESTROIERS OF THE ISLAND??
@@blueisland24 Oh no honey. Greece was Russia of 1974. They tried to unify Cyprus with Greece due to the historical reasons just like Russia does for Ukraine.
@@spyantreas tell that to your EOKA member grandpa and stop crying. You are sad because enosis is a dream now
Go also Turkish side ,it’s beautiful
It’s not the Turkish Side. It’s Turkish Occupied Cyprus
You forgot to mention Persians!!!!!!!
Occupied??????
Here's to making scenario SSP5-8.5 of the IPCC assessment a reality. All hail the anthropocene epoch.

👍
she is really beautiful
It's not a documentary but seems paid content...
You didn’t even speak to 1 Turkish speaking Cypriot you passed the most protected turtle beach at golden sands in karpaz. You also didn’t meet with the people in nicosia where they all cypriots meets and talks about peace and have events together. This was most selfish or racist video i ever seen.
It doesn't surprise me me at all as the Mediterranean Journey Series do not have Turkey episodes... They literally disregard Turkey among other Mediterranean countries although Turkey has such a long/large Mediterranean Coast and geography... So disappointing!
hmm, german doku dubbed english, wie praktisch.. 😁
Why Northern Cyprus is still occupied by turks? It is a shame that Europe tolerate this illegal act which today gives Turkey and it despotic friends a sense of impunity. This has to change.
Of course, Turks and Europeans always trying to destroy any Middle Eastern country.
Maybe you should lead the troops towards the mines at the border
How liar he is. 18:22 these are Ottoman houses. And also it's Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. I don't understand why they get permission to enter in a country where they are disrespecting Turkish Republic?🤷🏼♂️
Truth hurts
That woman is a beautiful woman.
because God loved the world so much that he gave his only son Jesus Christ for all mankind so that any man who believes in Jesus Christ may inherit 6
Well done DW , being so objective and avoid or ignore Turks. This is very typical European two faces
37 view and fourth comment is from 🇮🇳india
Indians love Cyprus, they come here and take benefits that us Cypriots pay for them. Clown Indians are too lazy to make their country good so they move to Cyprus
A set of chatting up small buisness owners did not meet expectations at all. Far under DW doku standards.
It was more like a documentatary by order of "someone"
Let me guess: you re never had an any business.......
@@TermoHydroKmPt You have missed to touch the spot buddy. It is not about buisnissman experience but purely assessing the documentary as a DW viewer.
I would love to live in North Cyprus, but the taxes are too high for my taste :) The lack of tourists and commerce, just everyday life, it seems kind of trapped in time which is what I prefer. I just wish this documentary showed the WHOLE island, they only showed the Turkish side for a few minutes by bicycle, and no northern representation, only Greek. This is kind of half a documentary piece, making the title misleading. Other than that irresponsible bias, it is thoroughly enjoyable.
True such a shame because the whole of Europe sides with the greek side. We go very much unnoticed.
80% of cyprus is greek
The so called “Turkish” side is an occupational zone. Why would anyone want to go there.
@@phantompage4304 That's a good point!
Still if your making a documentary about the island why not include both sides. No hate just saying
Cyprus = Sineb. Who's more beautiful. I really like Sineb. Is she single?
I'm from Turkish Cyprus
The Armenian part of the city has nothing to do with Russia or Russian architecture, these are Armenians from Cilicia (Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia) who fled from the genocide by the Turks.
At least they mentioned it, which in itself is shocking (...) More hilarious when they speak about Turkey and always fail to mention the Armenian heritage.
Leaving this comment I’m first
Correction. turkey illegally occupies Cyprus!
yeah but you should add "after greece illegally coup d'état in cyprus"
Yeah, so that your grandfathers wouldn't slaughter every Muslim on the island

At 4:46 she sips some wine. Now, I might be out of touch with all things Muslim, and so I apologise in advance for my utter ignorance, but I thought that alcohol was forbidden to Muslim believers. What am I missing?
Cypriots Turk hardly follow religion. Same for other Muslim like in Senegal and other places. My family in Cyprus don’t even go to the mosque. Most of them are converted by force.
she's secular muslim. btw, Muslim in Cyprus also drinks Alcohol.
Well, not all muslims follow their religion 100%, she's obviously not wearing the hijab. I guess christians don't follow their religion that much either.
How lovely. Wondering how it feels like behaving like an opinionated expert on history, politics and everything while coming from a country that maybe 1 or 2 people can give a decent definition of democracy if we are lucky enough. Thats what the post truth era is called, I assume.
Oh I forgot architecture. ;)) also the expertise drew my attention at the moment she said Russian influence for a classical Greco-Turkish house designs. :)))
For politics I hate it on both sides. This is coming from a Cypriot that lived in the south part but fled off the Island and my family fled up North.
