- Six million people live in the cultural melting pot that is Lebanon. Muslims and Christians coexist here, although not always without conflict. Journalist Jaafar Abdul Karim shows colleague Sineb El Masrar the nation where he grew up.
For our 10-part series, Sineb El Marar and Jaafar Abdul Karim toured 10 nations in two years. Some of these countries underwent political and economic upheaval during this period. One of these was Lebanon, the homeland of Jaafar Abdul Karim.
In the first episode of "Mediterranean Journey”, the presenter invites his colleague Sineb El Masrar to the Beirut studio where he records his program "Jaafar Talk". He takes Sineb along on a tour of the city. It is a place that still bears the scars of civil war: Christians against Palestinians, both of these groups against Arab nationalists and all of them against Israel. The journey continues to the north of the country to Tripoli, where Jaafar meets the activist Lea Baroudi, initiator of the reconciliation project "March”.
Jaafar spends the night at the eco-lodge "Beit Al Batroun", not far from Byblos. The small estate is a slice of heaven; a dream realized for owner Colette Kahil. Back in Beirut, Jaafar meets the journalist Joumana Haddad, who runs support groups addressing the societal taboo of homosexuality.
He also meets with Zeina Hawa from the initiative "Chain Effect". She and her fellow cyclists are campaigning to make the Lebanese capital better for bikes. Together with Sineb, Jaafar explores Beirut on two wheels. The next stop on his trip is the Beqaa Valley, where he meets Syrian refugee women making clothes for the fair-trade project "Master Peace”.

I just want to thank the creators of the documentaries on this channel. Not only are they informative and insightful, but you actually read out the translations of foreign languages for me. The nightlife is amazing in Lebanon, and the nightclubs are one of the best in the world.
What a beautiful locale. I hope that the region can have long and sustained peace and economic growth for all its people. No more wars anywhere. Kudos to the lady bringing the warring factions to work together to repair some of the damage as a result of the senselessness.

I have visited 82 countries and Lebanon is definitely in my TOP 3 !!! Amazing nature, very rich culture and history, very welcoming and friendly people, crazy nightlife and very yummy food (I mean really really yummy) ! Beirut has it all ❤ ❤

I’ve visited like 32 countries and Lebanon is in top 5 maybe and I have Lebanese ancestry even it’s just too hard to travel around there with the economic crisis
@@adrianayub1025 Yes the best thing is to have a trustworthy taxi driver from the hotel and keep him with you for the whole journey or to rent a car if you like adventures xD

As a south American that knows almost nothing about the middle East, I see Lebanon as a country that had many problems and learned to overcome them. It seems one of the few countries in the middle East that has tolerance to deal with many issues.

Lebanon has not overcome anything. The more the Christian population decline and the Muslim population increase, the worse Lebanon becomes. Very soon, European countries will begin to look more and more like Lebanon after importing millions of Muslims into their Christian countries.
I visited Egypt and Jordan in September October 2021. I'm surprised to met many Coptic christians in Egypt and saw churches in Aswan, Sharon El Sheikh and Dahab. Jordan on the other hand, also has a few churches along the Dead Sea routes, it's also the original baptism site by the Jordan River

@@SteveMatoMato There is a very subtle bias presented in the video about lebsnon, which distorts historical facts. One of the subtle propaganda mentioned is that the plo was fighting christians, it is false since the palestinian refugees did include a significant amount of christians at the time(the were later granted citizenship in lebanon, a privilege the rest did not get) , it is also important to note that fight was between the filangists who were big fans of musulini , fascism and nazism in general (the founded of the group used to attend fascist meetings in Italy in late 30s) and ironically yet unsurprisingly you can find out who supported them in 80s ....
Another issue is with the Lebanese image, the country is just a tourist hub, it used to be a financial center in west Asia and a trade hub with the port, if you watch dw videos on Lebanon , you would notice that the EU position is against the restoration of the cargo port, the projects that france and Germany proposed are about turning the port into a tourist Mina, so that there won't be any trade other significant trade hubs in west Asia ...

The Corniche at the end reminded me of Alexandria, Egypt, the half moon bay which also face the Mediterranean, they also called it Corniche. I visited during week 1, 2021. Alexandria has many colonial buildings facing the Mediterranean. I hoped on the local mini 🚌 to see the bay at night, the sunset was so beautiful.
Thoroughly enjoyed this. Looks like a beautiful vibrant city. Well done DW. Can't wait for the next destination.

@@Ev3Mr they didn’t lie. I’m Lebanese. Lebanon is around 55% Muslims and 45% Christians. there has been tension between the 2 since the civil war but we have coexisted since forever. And for the most part, we all live together with no issues. For example, I’m a Muslim who went to a Christian school. And there are millions who are like me.
Ja'afar is doing a great job of awareness on his program in Arabic on DW.

I am vegetarian, for me nice to see the food.
But Now Lebanon's economic crisis very high and may be the country is going bankrupt so, common people are suffering.

Thanks to the creators of this documentary, I learned important things about this great region of Mediterranean. It has beautiful places...In previous years I thought that refugees of Middle Orient just were accepted in Germany, but Lebanon has received them as well. That's a good actitud. God bless Lebanon and other countries who help their neighbors.

We don't coexist in Lebanon. Just take a look at our antique laws, we don't even have civil marriage. Bloodlines can't be mixed and everything is also divided by sect, let alone religion. It's nice to hold Lebanon as an example of tolerance....maybe if we all lived in the year 2000 but it's 2020 and practically every first or second world country is more tolerant than Lebanon

However, you made the wrong choice at the market. Lebanese (yellow Battikh asfar) melons are the best! They are delicious and very aromatic. You can smell their goodness from afar. Maybe next time 🙂
