    I can't believe there are *still* people who cut their dogs' tails and ears. That's not being well-meaning, that's just cruel.

    All but ONE of these are good. I have to disagree however about the fireworks one. My friend took that advise & always tried to protect her dog from loud noises and fireworks. That created a dog who was afraid of loud noises. Problem is....she now lives in the country with this dog. Fireworks, gun shots, 4 wheelers and thunderstorms are a common occurrence, in fact, in the summertime, nearly DAILY occurrence. See the problem? I have a different approach...DEsensitize my dogs. When they are pups, we go outside & ooow & ahhh at the lightning & thunder. Storms are an occasion to play or walk in the rain. We stop and let the 4 wheelers zip by & comment on how close that gun shot might have been. My dog sometimes looks to me for reassurance when something loud or scary happens but I just say, oh, that's just backfire, no biggy & we continue to walk & he's reassured. I get it if you don't agree, but,

    Some of this doesn't apply to my dog. But great video nevertheless. Golden Retrievers love cuddling. They in fact come to you for cuddles. Also, they love meeting guests without being asked to do so.

    Love these tips! And very well said in perspective of the dogs. Though I'd like to give soft push back on #'s 4 and 5.
    3:15 - while I agree it's better to assume a dog wouldn't appreciate a hug, and so shouldn't try to give a dog one initially. I've also met many dogs who whole-body leaned into my torso and wouldn't stop until I looped an arm around their body and held them close while scratching them. I call these puppy-hugs ☺️ so as with most things, hugs can be okay but only when the dog wishes for them; and only when accompanied with scritches as you do.
    3:58 - yes, crouching is more likely to be seen as an intimidating gesture; especially from strangers, and even more especially from smaller dogs. BUT it should've been noted that this is mostly an issue when done while facing head on with the dog. The ideal way to greet a dog is still to crouch, just do so while turned sideways so as to show you don't intend to pounce. Also helps to casually hold out your closest hand for them to approach and give an explorative sniff, if they want.

      If the dog instigates it, then it is your lucky day. Treasure that.
      Smiling and laughing hysterically in a dogs face is most offensive. They understand it to be a snarl or growling which could incite the dog to attack.

    I live a couple of kilometers from Sweden's largest airport and on New Year's Eve all of the airport hotel rooms are reserved for dog and cat owners at a reduced price. The airport is situated in the countryside and also there's a ban against fireworks near airports, so it's a nice time for the pets, in an evening and night which is a total nightmare for other dogs and cats elsewhere. I only wish there were stables there as well, since there are many horses who hate fireworks...

    We have always crated puppies at night until they get fully house trained. NEVER as a punishment. The crate has to be adjusted so the pup can turn around but not so large as to have a spot to potty. Conversely, you have to be willing to get up three times a night so they can potty outdoors. Our 16 week old Standard Poodle will do eight hours, and she goes to the front door when she needs to go, so she’s about ready for freedom at night. Our six year old Airedale Terrier sleeps on the floor at the foot of our bed - right beside the puppy’s crate.

    4:27 I’ve noticed that I attract the affections of larger dogs, due to the fact that my 4’10” self is short enough. I’ve even had a Borzoi gently lift herself up to gently rest her front paws, (then her chin area) on my shoulders. It was my first official “hug” from a dog. 🥺

    It is always learning more about how to live with my dog. However, it would have helped more if when you say you should not do this then say what you should do instead. About the time I finish listening to this it almost seems as if you should not talk to or touch your dog. no way am I not going to talk to my dog?😢

    I have a confession to make. Sometimes when I see my little one sleeping on the floor I try to pick him up and put him on my bed because I want him to be comfortable and most importantly, I don’t ever want him to feel alone and now knowing about sleep startle it makes a lot of sense knowing that I should not wake my little one when he is sleeping, I just want to give him the best kind of life I could care of the way he has given me life because I would not be alive here for one for him. I feel so terrible.

    • @Smelly-Belly
      @Smelly-Belly  4 місяці тому +8

      First off, don’t feel terrible-you’re an amazing dog parent just for caring so much! 🐶 It’s completely understandable that you want your little one to be comfortable and loved. Now that you know about sleep startle, you can just let him rest peacefully and know that you’re doing the best thing for him. Dogs are great at finding their own cozy spots, and the fact that you’re there for him means he already feels safe and loved. ❤️ The bond you share is what really matters, and it sounds like you’re giving him a wonderful life. 🌟

    I keep a light cloth to cover the top and sides of my dogs crate where just the front is open. He gets in there and takes his nap when I’m cooking and cleaning but I leave the door open in case he wants to use the bathroom. He seems to like it because if I take it off to launder he can’t wait for me to put it back on.

My dog as I tell everyone speaks English and trust understand every word I say all four of mines do. Love hugs and gives them way more than I do. I feel him on the tail and ear cutting and like three others but I guess. But hey different strokes for different folks 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

    The "Crouching" thing is WRONG... animals try seem LARGER when they are on a defensive mode......and they lie on the ground or make themselves seem SMAL when meaning no harm and submit.....making yourself small instead of TOWERING over them is better.

    • @AM-ou1wt
      @AM-ou1wt 3 місяці тому +3

      He said crouching mimics predatory behavior, not defensive. Animals crouch in order to surprise their prey (sneak up and be less visible). They make themselves larger to defend themselves. Hope that clarifies, I can see why it could be confusing.

    • @fireball1066
      @fireball1066 3 місяці тому +4

      Alej: exactly! Humans don't crouch the way dogs do because our anatomy is so different. To pet a dog (especially someone else's dog), step back so you don't have to tower over him and crouch down.
      The advice to not say "it's OK" is simplistic and dumb -- because it ignores how you say it and the context. If you say it in a low soothing voice and pet him (e.g., when a firecracker goes off), the dog will associate that soothing voice and gentle petting with your assurance that nothing dangerous is going on. The dog learns to stay calm and to trust you.

      @wooly: She knows and trusts you -- AND she knows you are playing. Dogs love to play attack and to respond to our play attacks. Outside when I walk my furry boy, there are a couple of playful dogs we run into. When we approach either one on the sidewalk, each will drop their belly to the ground, stare intensely at him, then pounce playfully when he gets within range.

    I believe other people's dogs aren't afraid of fireworks because since they were little and heard fireworks on tv or in the garden get use to the sound and no its not danger. I use to play ball in my house and clap when fireworks were loud in our street. So i distracted her and turn it into a positive its like when you have a baby and everyone has to be quite and u have another person who puts the hoover on and tv's etc so they get use to noise xxx

    1st rule if you don't like yourself then don't have a pet.. cause if you can't love yourself then you aren't going to love a pet .
    2nd rule if you're irresponsible as an adult then it's obvious that you're gonna be a irresponsible pet parent
    3rd rule if you're so self absorbed that you're house plants die you have no business having a pet depend on you
    Pass this along to people that you see that these 3 rules apply to...pets are here to love us and us to love them back.. remember when you hurt them.. they can in return hurt you or someone you love spell dog backwards
    GOD 🙏 their heaven 🙏 sent so treat them like the gift they are

      That's crazy! My dog loves her crate,,I leave the door open during the day and she goes in to nap. At night she stands in her crate and waits from me to close the door then lays down and goes to sleep for the night. I keep a cover over 3 sides and it's like a lovely doggie den for her. She feels safe and secure there! But I bet my breed of dog is also banned in your country.

      @@vivienneclarke2421 No, pit bulls aren't banned in Sweden. No breeds are banned here. Yet... How do you know that she loves her crate?? After all, she doesn't know a life without it; you've taught her to accept the crate as something normal. It's not. It's not normal to crate a dog. Thankfully, Sweden knows that. We have very strict animal laws here. Oh, and we also do not cut the ears and tails off our dogs in this country!

      @Daffob1nt So tell me,do your dogs stay outside? Because using your same ridiculous "logic" living in a house isn't normal for dogs. They only like coming inside,where it's warm and comfortable,because that's what they've been taught to accept. Do you honestly believe that it's cruel to bring dogs into our homes?
      In the wild it's natural for dogs to want a den. A crate,with a soft pad and blankets,covered to provide a dark secure place,is a perfectly NATURAL substitute for an indoor dog den. The door is left open during the day,and once she's 100% potty trained it will also be left open at night. Free to come and go as she pleases.
      Or do you think it would be more humane if I left them to sleep outside in 20°F temperatures?
      Outta here with such nonsense~!!

    The removal of a dog's ears or tails as part of their breed standard typically indicates a dog that was originally bred for Bloodsport as tails and ears could easily be injured by another dog or bear or bull or whatever deprave thing people were doing with dogs. I've also heard of docking the tales of long-haired shepherding dogs that work near barbed wire because the tail can get tangled in the barbed wire

      Hi. I suggest to use just clean water. Warm, lukewarm water. I wash my dog like this. I never used shampoo on her. She loves taking baths. Never refuses. Yes, afterwards while she is wet , she has classic wet dog smell, but when she dries out, she doesn't have almost any odor. Her fur is clean and shiny, and has very nice puppy -smell. Shampoos irritate dogs skin and cause problems. In past I did wash with shampoo, the next thing they always used to do , they would go find a rotting corpse , some carcass, or even cow dung, and rub themselves finely in it.😂 The smells that human love, dogs hate. Warm water bath gives no allergy and leaves dog clean.
