Why not a sunscreen only relying on the "newer" sunscreen actives like Tinosorb M, Tinosorb S and Uvinul T150? These are not irritating either, and don't feel as drying as zinc oxide based sunscreens.

After stupidly following the recommendation of another popular UA-cam dermatologist, began double cleansing using an oil cleanser as my Step One. This caused my skin so much grief. Discontinued both of the cleansers I was using. Got Vanicream Gentle Face Cleanser. This product has saved my skin. I hope they never change the formula, or discontinue this wonderful product! Coincidentally, the only moisturizer my skin tolerates (after it’s skin barrier was ruined) is also made by Vanicream. I tried LaRoche Posey’s Toleraine Double Repair moisturizer (amongst others), but my skin did not like it (to me, felt greasy). I spent $32 on it, so figured I’d use it on my hands instead.
hi dr sam! I'm currently struggling with sensitivity with my skin and I think your advice is excellent! but I wanted to know whether the cleanser itself is enough to take off the sunscreen? I've tried double cleansing with micellar water and then a water based cleanser but it leaves my skin a tad red...
would this routine work for perimenapausal skin? I've always had sensitive skin but now it's becoming itchy, more red, and some breakouts but it won't tolerate any type of acne treatment and I've tried retinol products (including Adaplene) numerous times only to end up with contact dermatitis
I really appreciate your good advice. Wish you could come to Norway occasionally. We do not have such good dermatologists here. Really need your help for my hypersensitive skin 😊❤️
My skin is so sensitive! I keep my skincare simple and use a Neostrata tinted mineral sunscreen that my skin loves. Life changing! Being someone who has always struggled with acne it's so freeing to not have to wear makeup...havent worn in many months. And tolerating Adapaline twice a week to. My skin has never looked better! Thank you to dermatologists on public platforms that educate and encourage!
I damaged my barrier very bad. Got to the point where my face was extremely red, inflamed, broken out etc. I used La Rose Pose Triple Moisture and it was so bad on my skin. Same with Cerave. My skin just did not like those products. I’m surprised a hydrating toner wasn’t mentioned. That helped my skin a lot and still does throughout the day when I’ve lost hydration. The best moisturizer for barrier health in Stratias liquid gold! It’s amazing and I highly recommend it! It transformed my skin during this process and was the main component in helping. I’m 4-5 months in and still am healing.
Can you suggest any ceramide creams or serums with fatty acids? With no essential oils,no niacinamide,no HA, very reactive skin, and had neglected it before. Please something with minimal ingredients. Thank you in advance
These were fantastic recommendations but the idea that using a mineral spf, which are usually pasty white/gray/purple, would reduce the need for foundation definitely tickled me. That would be a reason to reach for some! 😂
Is the Cerave antiaging night cream good for acne and milia prone skin? It seems quite rich and the renewal effect is from the niacinimide? What about the Cerave renewal antiaging day cream as it has capsulated retinol?
@@m09nbby18 ohh that makes me so happy! If you’re scared, maybe try to do a thin layer on one side of your face over night and see how it goes. That’s what I did. Hope it works just as well for you. Good luck! 🍀🥰

Do you have any recommendations for sunscreen available in Australia? I find it hard to find to find a good one here (the ones you mention are not available)
Hello Dr Sam, thank you so much for your videos....would this help with skin irritated due to tretinoin?....the problem is that when my face get irritated , i end up having hyperpigmentation...(i have brown skin)...and i am always afraid it will not go away...😥
Hi Dr Sam! Thank you so much for your advice. 🌺 Unfortunately my skin and my eyes sting when I use The la roche posay cleanser and also the one you mentioned from Aven'e☹️. Do you have anything else you can recommend? 😊
The Avene product line didn’t work for me at all. I have the LRP cleanser and ultra sensitive moisturizer line products on order. I can see using the Cicaplast cream on top of the moisturizers to help with the extreme dryness that goes with barrier problems for me. On its own, it’s not enough when my skin is mad about what I’ve done to it. For sunscreen, I’ve also ordered the LRP all mineral one for sensitive skin. I hope it works. I’m so frustrated with trying to find a sunscreen that doesn’t cause more problems for me.
Avene Tolerance range is the only range that calms my skin, especially the face wash (I do rinse it off). I also can’t use a flannel, only my finger tips.
Could I request some future videos pls one on nano sunscreens and there safety and the other on explaining formulations and how the higher the percentage of the ingredients don’t necessarily mean the product is the better one to choose
the la roche posay toleriane dermo cleanser would you say would be good for dry, red, very sensitive/reactive skin that can be acne prone (had to take accutane for about 9 months a few years ago) as an everyday gentle cleanser? morning & night? because its so very few ingredients and is surfactant free would it still cleanse just as well as lets say cerave?? i dont wear makeup often, only if im going out (which isnt much at all during these times haha) to remove makeup i use my la roche posay micellar water for reactive skin and it does a great job of removing my full face of makeup, then i go in with a gentle cleanser, would this one be good for this method as well?
What about the Ethylhexyl Palmitate as second ingredient in Toleriane Dermo-cleanser? It’s rated 4 in comedogenic list and it feels so in the skin, I hate the oily feeling, bought by mistake thinking it was Toleriane Hydrating Cleanser and it’s sitting in my shelf since then. 😔 Would love to know anyone’s opinion or experience with that though, should I give it a leap of trust?
Thank you for this video! I had a weird reaction to a supposedly mild LHA cleanser (LRP Pigmentclar) and the skin on my chin has been flaky ever since. It’s been months! I swapped my normal skincare routine for a very basic one to heal my skin: LRP Toleraine cleanser, CeraVe gel oil with ceramide and niacinimide, and LRP Cicaplast as needed. It helps a lot, but after the slightest attempt to go back to my normal routine, like one mild exfoliation after a 4-week break, the flakes are back in the same spot. Is that a sign of a barrier issue that still isn’t resolved? Or could it be something else, like eczema, that a derm needs to treat? I have pretty normal skin, it’s not dry.
im a dude. i know im fine n my skin barrier kills my confidence. my shits been damaged for over a year. i cant fix my shit either. shits fuckin w my mental health at this point 😔
Dr. Sam I bought your brightly serum with 10% azelaic acid and I LOVE IT, it's a a multitasker, has a nice blend of very beneficial ingredients, it absorbs very rapidly, doesn't leave a greasy or oily finish on my oily skin! no residue and I just love it love it love it, in another video i said that it leaves a bad smell that lingers but I was wrong, that was from my scalp product in my hair and not your product so apologies for that, I don't think it leaves any smell at first I was skeptical but I ended up liking it based on the sensorial appeal, cosmetic elegance and ease of application, can't wait to see what kind of results i get from it! My only pet peeve with your brand is the packaging, otherwise I love that product!
I have an appointment with Dr. Emma on September 16th! I've had a bad reaction on my face that has left me with a bad breakout. Are the Avene Moisturizers safe for acne? Is one better than the other for acne prone skin? Need to do something to help my skin barrier between now and my appointment which was the earliest appointment I could get with you guys! Please advise as I cannot risk any more breaking out
I don't recall the exact name. There was a moisturizer from the avene line that was recommended to me for oily, sensitive, and retinol user skin. It is not the gel cream but the other one containing aqua/spring water, glycerin, parrifin, and safflower oil. The light/matte version was good for me.
I developed rosacea and acne after having chickenpox as an adult. I didn't have acne as a teenager. This video is extremely helpful. I wish I had watched it before reading too many articles in Google. Nevertheless, I would like to share what works for me, in no particular order. 1. Toleriane cleanser - La Roche 2. Calm and restore re-hydrating night cream - Aveeno 3. Calm and restore gel moisturiser - Aveeno 4. Heliocare 360 fluid cream sunscreen SPF 50+. 5. Hydrating cream with Azelaic Acid from Sesderma 6. I am currently testing cicaplast baume B5 from La Roche to improve my skin barrier, now that winter is on the way. Will see how it goes. I will make a note from these products to test them another time. Thank you 🎉
It's not my face that's had a damaged skin barrier. It's my arms & thighs! During Winter, after a shower, my arms & thighs not only itch, they burn for hours ! I dread showers in Winter. We added a shower filter. That helped the first year....didn't help last year. Bioderma Ataderm cleansing oil has helped a bit.
Really enjoy your vlogs. Avene is one of my favourite brands. The only product in their line I don’t get on well with is their SPF 50 for the face. I have an olive skin tone and the filters leave a very white cast behind. Thanks again!
I think that is because they use Tinosorb M (nano). Avene and Pierre Fabre in general use a set of only four filters in their organic sunscreens: Tinosorb S, Tinosorb M, iscotrizinol and avobenzone. If you do not mind yellow stains after washing because of avobenzone, these filters are all excellent. In their sticks they use Tinosorb S, avobenzone, Uvinul A plus and octisalate. They recommend to apply only one finger of the product on face, ears and both sides of the neck. Perhaps you use too much product. Apply it on dry face. Personally, I stopped using organic sunscreens because of yellow stains and I only use inorganic (mineral) sunscreens which are in my view even better. Avene has them all and they contain either a mix of small and large particles of titanium dioxide and iron oxides (UV, VL) or a mix of small particles of both titanium dioxide and zinc oxide (UV). I easily remove them by using their lipid based foaming cleanser (XeraCalm oil) or solvent (Tolerance extreme lotion or Antirougeours lotion).
@@ljuboblajic4903 Bioderma Photoderm Milk SPF 50+ has a very high concentration of Tinosorb S and M, on top of a higher than normal Avobenzone (3% instead of 5%). Considered the best sunscreen you can buy in Canada. It's wonderful on the skin.
@@SusanSaysSomething If it leaves yellow stains after machine washing because of avobenzone, then, in my view, it is not wonderful at all ! That is why I stopped using organic sunscreens. American company EltaMD (Colgate Palmolive) in most of their sunscreens use a mix of zinc and one or two organic filters (explicitly not avobenzone) because of cosmetic reasons. Only EltaMD Active SPF 50 plus (zinc 19 %, titanium 4 %), UV Pure SPF 47, UV Replenish SPF 44 as well as tinted UV Elements SPF 44 and UV Physical SPF 41 are 100 % inorganic sunscreens.
Hi there. Love your video. Your skin looks amazing!! I’m here looking for help 😞 I did a number on myself. It’s been almost a year and a half now and it seems this may be permanent. I was going through one of the most traumatizing events of my life and was not thinking clearly. Basically what happened is I THOUGHT I had herpes on my lips, like a fool, I put everything and the kitchen sink on it. I put essential oils like Melissa, oregano oil and I believe the one that did me in was ACV. It burned so badly my head was like a tea pot when it touched my skin. To make matters worse, I went in a tanning bed for a short minute a few days later. Honestly I have no idea what I was thinking. I had recently lost my job and I was going through a lot that an ex put me through. The last thing I needed was herpes. Now come to find out i believe it was just my own fordyce spots that were enlarged from oils I was eating. I’ve tried everything man: centelua, candula cream, hydraulic acid, sea buckthorn, rose hip oil, a stem cell regenerist cream, vitamin C serums. I’m just so dang depressed. Looking at the mirror everyday and my upper lip looking like I drank kool aid. I think I wrecked my dermis as it gets irritated from the sun or acidic things like coffee. I think it’s also the fact my fordyce spots are still there on the upper clef of my lip so they stick out as they’re white and the rest is red/pink consistently. I recently got a KTP laser treatment on it. The same day it looked better, but foolishly I didn’t wear sunblock like I should’ve afterwards and live in the Dallas TX sun. I tried to avoid sun but of course you have things to do. I wonder if being in sun added to my hyperpigmentation and added melanin to make it dark/redder. They recommend two procedures. I want to get another but $250 is a lot for a spot treatment. Another thing I think made it worse was immediately after the initial trauma, I bought a red light device to help, but it had a blue light mode and I think using that made it worse too. Had no clue Blue light can do that. Maybe green light will help. A different dermatologist suggested a bleaching cream like hydroquinone- I don’t think that’ll help though.
Hi Dr. As I have a damaged skin barrier and also combination skin...can I use the CeraVe daily lotion and on top, the LRP cicaplast baume b5, and would that help recovering my skin without causing more breakouts?
I am in an hyperpigmentation tratment with alfa arbutin, and tranaxemic acid for my upper lip area and it got really sensitive. Should I stop for a bit?
Irritation increases hyperpigmention especially in skin of colour. I would stop for a few days until the irritation has healed. Then introduce one of the ingredients slowly monitoring for irritation. You can then start incorporating the other ingredient (perhaps at different times of day or week), but again slowly and carefully. hope that helps.
La Roche Posay Tolerian Gentle Cleanser burned my skin so bad and broke me out into dermatitis. I am afriad to try the La Roche Posay Tolerian Dermo Face Cleanser..."

Dr Sam explained the use of topical steroids as a very temporary treatment (meaning days), not sure if you continued watching the video but she made that clear. She is also a qualified physician that certainly is aware of such "dangers" and side effects of medications.
If you have a setback in reintroducing actives/etc., do you have to go back to square one? My skin has been non-red and doing really well for the past month as I was recuperating from a non-related surgery and being mostly off actives in skincare. In the past several weeks, I started reintroducing actives and I might have been too overzealous with my tretinoin, as this morning my skin got VERY red after gentle cleansing and Olivarrier toner which had been terrific for the past 2 weeks. The redness has not gone away, even after copious rinsing with water (actually this seemed to make it even more red). Such a bummer.
Has the Dr. Sam Bunting Brightly serum been tested on reconstructed skin models to see how efficiently it gets into the skin if at all? Of course my main concerns are azelaic acid and niacinamide because when I used the 10% azelaic acid from paula's choice that actually made my skin itch! Yours doesn't which makes me question whether it actually gets into the skin or not?

Watch at 1.25x speed ur welcome.
These were fantastic recommendations but the idea that using a mineral spf, which are usually pasty white/gray/purple, would reduce the need for foundation definitely tickled me. That would be a reason to reach for some! 😂
LaRoche-Posay has a mineral sunscreen that goes on like a gel. No white. Also Trader Joe's has a great mineral sunscreen--no tell-tale white.
Is the Cerave antiaging night cream good for acne and milia prone skin? It seems quite rich and the renewal effect is from the niacinimide? What about the Cerave renewal antiaging day cream as it has capsulated retinol?
La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume b5 saved my skin, when nothing else worked!
Thanks so much for ur comment bc I was so scared to buy any of these in case they break me out as I’m very acne prone
@@m09nbby18 ohh that makes me so happy! If you’re scared, maybe try to do a thin layer on one side of your face over night and see how it goes. That’s what I did. Hope it works just as well for you. Good luck! 🍀🥰
Did it feel greasy on your skin?
@@millie6821 no, not really greasy. It’s too heavy during the day, but it does not feel pore clogging or uncomfortable imp. I don’t really know, how to explain it properly. It doesn’t feel uncomfortable like e.g. coconut oil does.
Do you have any recommendations for sunscreen available in Australia? I find it hard to find to find a good one here (the ones you mention are not available)
hybrid sunscreens like lighthearted by sunday riley is my fave not too oily but not too matte either just perfect
What physical sunscreen do you recommend for sensitive dark skin?
Hello Dr Sam, thank you so much for your videos....would this help with skin irritated due to tretinoin?....the problem is that when my face get irritated , i end up having hyperpigmentation...(i have brown skin)...and i am always afraid it will not go away...😥
I would think so.
It should help especially the cerave moisturiser with ceramide
Hello I’m a new subscriber☺️ I was wondering about your thoughts in the Elta md foaming facial cleanser
Hi Dr Sam! Thank you so much for your advice. 🌺 Unfortunately my skin and my eyes sting when I use The la roche posay cleanser and also the one you mentioned from Aven'e☹️. Do you have anything else you can recommend? 😊
Hi there.. try using the Bioderma Sensibio Gel Cleanser (pink bottle). This one works really well and is for sensitive skin!
@@erginuycu6234 Thank you very much ! :)
It's on to rinse off ? I can't figure out how to use it ? Does it acually rinse off ?
Dr. Bunting, what about for those who are acne-prone? Would the priority here be to use these kind of products over causing further acne?
Could I request some future videos pls one on nano sunscreens and there safety and the other on explaining formulations and how the higher the percentage of the ingredients don’t necessarily mean the product is the better one to choose
noted! 😊
For some reason I can't seem to use La Roche Posay Toleriane dermo cleanser without breaking out. Could it be the ethylhexyl palmitate? 🤔
hi is elta md available in the uk ? thankyou
the la roche posay toleriane dermo cleanser would you say would be good for dry, red, very sensitive/reactive skin that can be acne prone (had to take accutane for about 9 months a few years ago) as an everyday gentle cleanser? morning & night? because its so very few ingredients and is surfactant free would it still cleanse just as well as lets say cerave?? i dont wear makeup often, only if im going out (which isnt much at all during these times haha) to remove makeup i use my la roche posay micellar water for reactive skin and it does a great job of removing my full face of makeup, then i go in with a gentle cleanser, would this one be good for this method as well?
Hi ! what do you think of the lait creme concentré Embryolisse when you have such sensitive and damaged skin? Thanks 😊
Very interesting all your videos Dr Sam but I struggle all the time with the sound.
I agree, the sound is annoying, stopped watching, unfortunately, because half of what she's saying, I can't hear properly
Hi, doc... Can we use Cerave Moisturizing Cream to acne prone skin?
you can but it might be too heavy if you're oily. perhaps try the moisturising lotion instead
So sunscreen is only introduced in week 2 when all is well? We should go without sunscreen for a whole week?

What about La Roche Posay Cicaplast Baume B5?
Can cause irritation- personal experience speaking
I love it.. I'm using it atm actually as I'm having redness and irritation from brightly serum.

Interesting but poor sound😞
Thank you for being an informed resource.

1. Toleriane cleanser - La Roche
2. Calm and restore re-hydrating night cream - Aveeno
3. Calm and restore gel moisturiser - Aveeno
4. Heliocare 360 fluid cream
sunscreen SPF 50+.
5. Hydrating cream with Azelaic Acid from Sesderma
@@ljuboblajic4903 Thanks so much for a very informative response. That’s very helpful indeed.
@@ljuboblajic4903 Bioderma Photoderm Milk SPF 50+
has a very high concentration of Tinosorb S and M, on top of a higher than normal Avobenzone (3% instead of 5%).
I'm cautious about the Dermo cleanser because it has sodium hydroxide (lye) isn't that sensitising?
Not in the amount that they use. It’s extremely small and used to balance the pH to make it suitable for sensitive skin with barrier function issues.
I bought LRP Dermo Cleanser. Not Avene as it's very expensive so I jump straight to Cerave Moisturizing Cream. Hope it helps my skin.
But I can't find trusted EltaMD distributor / seller in my country

Dr Sam explained the use of topical steroids as a very temporary treatment (meaning days), not sure if you continued watching the video but she made that clear. She is also a qualified physician that certainly is aware of such "dangers" and side effects of medications.
I find your cleanser works very well with my sensitive skin.

Skin recovery cream the light version is the best and doesn’t sting skin
Are there any other sunscreens you would recommend? I'm looking for something that won't cause a rosacea flare up but is also cruelty free.
