when turning very large pieces why not set the raw piece in the lathe BUT add a pole to the center line and use the lathe base as a pole lathe so you spin slow and are in complete control of the speed with the foot peddle ... you cut on the downward spin ... be safer than current to get it round and balanced ... then switch into the powered lathe and rough as required
I watched this with my aunt shortly after my uncle died. His first ever wood lathe was delivered the afternoon he passed, he never got to use it. He was so excited to start though. I inherited his metal lathe and am currently getting it all set up. Now I have my dads old wood lathe and my uncles old metal lathe. I am currently trying to think of a cool project to use them both on. Anyway, your work has done more than produce beautiful things, it is also something my aunt and I bonded over together while mourning the devastating loss of a great man. Thank you for all you do and the things you don't even know you do. ❤🧡💜💚
As a father of three daughters, I am so pleased to see you break the mold and do something so physical and creative! You had me wondering how many trips to the sharpener and how many dumpsters of shavings you generated! Well done Ashley!
Courage is not the absence of fear. It is having the fear, but strengthening your mind to go and do what the fear is trying to stop you from doing. Ashley, what you did took just as much courage as any soldier hearing the words, "Men, we're going into battle," for the first time. A truly beautiful result is borne from an overcoming of fear. God bless you.
I can not for the life of me understand why anyone would put a thumbs down on this video. There are no political or religious issues involved, just a very gifted artisan sharing her craft with the world. What is wrong with these people?
This is the most beautiful table I have ever seen.Your turning is amazing and I hope you inspire more young women to take it up too..Your an extremely talented lady and it was a sheer pleasure watching you work 😀
Your willingness to take on the big challenges sets you apart. I so respect that. Your fear of turning on the lathe shows how you never let your guard down. As you say anything can happen. It is a absolutely stunning table. A great job.
Thank you Ashley for allowing me to watch you make such a beautiful table. Thanks to everyone especially James, rest his soul. I Love wood. When you put the oil on the table and said you could see the grains, I was thrilled. Thanks again so much to you all.
Ashley, a project first starts in the craftspersons heart. And your heart is HUGE. Sharing your work with me is a huge blessing. Loving your heart from afar!!!
I think most Wood Turners are very humble people and i enjoyed watching how both you and your colleagues went about the build. My condolences on the loss of your friend.
omgggggg ! ... never been so focused and riveted to my screen before ... WOW girl you did a beautiful and stunningly MASSIVE piece of artwork ...BRAVO and Thank You sooo much for sharing your obvious passion .. 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡
I have been turning for probably about 20 years off and on. I used to be a member of the Arizona Woodturners Association but three years ago I moved back to my home town and am now a member of a small woodturners group there. The Phoenix club was a large group and we put on symposiums every 2 years for a while which were probably third in size just below the AAW national an SWAT. I have only recently started watching your videos. You are an inspiration to me. I am very happy to see younger people and especially females showing interest and carrying on the hobby/skill/trade. I should be spending a lot more time in my shop, which is set up primarily for woodturning but I have gotten a bit lazy in my old age. I am still healthy so I have no excuse. Watching videos such as this are inspiring me to get out of my easy chair and use some of that great wood I have in my shed before it degrades beyond being useful. I have a lot of your videos to catch up on. Keep making chips kid.
Just beautiful! I think that's why I love working with wood, the moment you see that grain pop when you begin to apply the sealers and protectors it goes from that dull to this magnificent thing of beauty. I rewound this several times watching that moment over and over and I kept thinking how you must have felt as it was happening right before your eyes. Great work Ashley!!
I'm a 3rd generation woodworker and your creation is miraculous, ! I'm passing my know age to my daughters by biulding them each a woodworking bench , A love of wood is something to pass on to people you love . You show a passion for what do that is a precious! Keep doling what do its a gift to the world , Stay safe and healthy !
Awesome...just amazing... and I was sitting here feeling proud of my 1" high acorn box I turned yesterday.. lol. first perfect lid ive managed. Ashley you are an inspiration to all ..thank you
You are not only gifted as a turner but very brave to tackle such a large project. I am amazed every time I watch your videos at how good you are and the projects you do.
You're certainly a lady who likes a challenge, Ashley, and you rose to this one in grand style. It was a pleasure and an education to watch, thank you.
Wow! Such a talented individual. A creative intelligent mind. Poise and demeanour that are second to none. Not to mention pretty cute. Not too many would be brave enough to take on such a project. Absolutely amazing Ashley. Can't wait to see more of your work.
Don’t know how UA-cam knew to put this video into my “suggested” category but I’m sure glad they did! My mind is BLOWN by watching you create this magnificent masterpiece!🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤩🤩 I watched this video with tears of joy in my eyes. THANK YOU‼️ Oh yeah, I just subscribed.😀🙏🏼
First Ashley video I've seen. I started watching other wood turning channels just cuz I found it very interesting, then YT recommended yours. I really like how you narrated and being open about your experience. Instant subscribe.
Ms. Harwood you are a very special wood turner. Bravery is always mentioned in wood turning, but yours is extraordinary. Your ability to see what's inside that huge cylinder is amazing and beautiful.
Bravo Ashley!!! I’m speechless. From an architect’s perspective, you nailed it! The feeling of satisfaction you get when it’s done in your workshop is one thing but seeing it in the client’s house in the presence of them is indescribable, wouldn’t you say so? Please convey my congrats. to your whole team who made this project possible in life for us around the world to see. Congrats. & Cheers!
I am so impressed with your skill and artistry. Your videos are always instructive and beautifully edited, and I'm blown away by your woodworking precision. I could watch them all day. Please keep them coming!!
The apprentice outlearns the mentor. Fully respect to all involved, it's a massive piece to turn and a lot of energy to be dissipated if something lets go.
Wow...beyond words! What an inspiration you are Ashley. I'm in awe of your courage, skill and expertise in you craft. Kudos to all involved in this project. Thank you for sharing it!
Braveheart. The story and your ability to tackle this job will inspire many turners - men and women. Thank you for your courage (to strike out in this profession) and humility.
As a metal machinist. Wood turning is so organic. Material and operator. Where metal we turn dials to put our cutter into the material. Wood turners are intimate with the material linked via their cutting tools. This just puts soul into the wood turning projects. It’s a dance of sorts. I’m gonna start acquiring hand made wood items. More so spun items. Not only heirloom for my family. Support a true craft. Your work is amazing, courageous, and full of soul.
As an amateur turner also on a much much much smaller level im in absolute awe of your talent. I’m afraid to cut into a small block of wood much less something 300lbs large and costing $$$$. Awesome. I’m definitely a fan!
A job well done! A tribute to the makers of the world and most definitely an inspiration to all who have watched this wonderful post. I feel a true sense of community that is uniquely human. Let this serve as a guide to what we all can do together in cooperation! Lovely and simply beautiful wood!
Watching this video brought tears, the skills and talent in creating this work of art was breathtakingly beautiful. Thank you so much for capturing your journey in making this piece come to life. ♥️
An absolutely wonderful and beautiful job. I'm personally very proud of you for conquering your fear to simply get close to this large piece while it was spinning, as well as to work on it.
Ashley I am jealous of you. This turned out to be a masterpiece as you are probably aware and very proud of it. Your artistic perfection really gave this pedestal the most important piece to work on. I wish more people with talent could emerge you are a great turner that is for sure. You right this table was placed in a perfect place it fits just right. Thank you for sharing your talents.
She is an amazing crafts person. A person can only accomplish these unfathomable feats of daring when they love what they do. When there soul becomes one with the turning. Well done young lady. A credit to your craft.
That table almost turned out as gorgeous as Ashley's eyes when she smiles! Shame on UA-cam and their algorithms for *just now* showing me this channel.
I am impressed with the accuracy achieved in joining the blank wedges. I tried that approach in making a rugby trophy, and my joins failed while spinning. Ouch.
After the word "WOW" echoed about the room a few times, I thought, "What a testimonial to Ashley's skill and guts to turn these monsters, and what a testimonial to the Vicmarks that made them possible." Really nice job!
I've always had difficulty letting my furniture go, even though I made them specifically for someone else. I always felt like I was giving away a part of myself. For pieces I make for friends, I have a stamp that reads "Things made with the hands come from the heart." I've never done anything near the difficulty with sheer mass as this though.
Wow! That is super cool! And a beautiful work of art! Bravo! 👏 You said the pedestal blank weighed in at ~300lbs. Do you know what it weighed after turning? You also said you would not be doing anymore of these. Why?? 🤜🤛
Amazing. Very glad you found your calling in life not many can find it. Thanks for sharing and teaching us. Hoping one day to take one of your classes. God speed.
I get the impression that doing these scare her quite a lot and they are a massive mental and physical undertaking. She simply doesn't want to mess with them any longer. My .02.

Hello from John's Island. Just found your channel liked and subbed.
Why no more tables for them? Such beauty!
Don't think your t-shirts would look quite the same on me.

Probably they are jealous of the filthy rich people buying her work.
That is the work of a true artisan - respect for the timber, for the craft, and the courage to tackle the daunting. Congratulations!
This Piece is an absolute monster! Love this project!!
Good to see yinz John!
Not only are you building projects you are building respect and memories. This is class act work! Thank you.
Beautiful table and beautiful people celebrating human creativity in their home. Respect and big love for the art and the people.
Ashley, you are an inspiration to so many, young, old, male, female, novice or seasoned turners. Your talent and aspirations know no bounds. Brilliant

Sometimes the best man for the job is a woman! Awesome work Ashley. Thanks for sharing with the world.
Although many say the crafts are dying people like you are keeping them alive.
Cool project, the same
Ashley, a project first starts in the craftspersons heart. And your heart is HUGE. Sharing your work with me is a huge blessing. Loving your heart from afar!!!
Wow that is one of if not "the" most impressive piece I have ever seen done. Thank you for sharing.

Ashley and Martin, Thank you for taking the time to show how you both made a greet table base and it has a nice finish, Look good in the house.
You created an heirloom quality piece that can be enjoyed for 100s of years. Bravo! Also, top notch editing.
My 9-yo daughter and I have been watching wood turning videos for a while now. She was so excited to see a girl wood turner! Thank you for posting!
Such a peaceful presence you have Ashley. You're a modern day Bob Ross with your craft. (with way better hair)
That’s just simply incredible, amazing, awesome. Well done young Lady. Your work ethic and craftsmanship is not seen every day. Well done
Truly the work of an ARTIST! ASHLEY, YOU ARE A MASTER! SAFE TURNING,

Is it just me or isn’t she the most talented beautiful woman craftsman ever.....?
ua-cam.com/video/DqYxnDWmqys/v-deo.html
Is it just me or are there so many annoying men who only watch certain women because they are women.
They want it, we turn it.
A labor of love to preserve the craft.
Well done Ashley, what an amazing project. Really beautiful finished product, you should be really proud!
It wasn't just Ashely. It was she and a group of guys.
Bravo Ashley.... not a person to say " I can't" but a person to say " I can -- let's see how !!!".I applaud you.

Fantastic work and such an inspiration for my little girl. She loved watching your video. Keep up the good work.
What a wonderfully told story. The video, the post edits, the tone, the sincerity in your delivery and Mark's AMAZING!!!

Ashley you are one heck of a Artist and a Good looking Lady ! love your ambitious projects and smile
I'm trying to find a few words to describe the video and your journey to turn this project.
I ended up with a three, "Courage" and "Pure Awe" !
awesome to see a young lady that backs herself great job
The way you mounted both pieces internally and externally reminds me of how engine crankshafts are balanced.
You created an heirloom quality piece that can be enjoyed for 100s of years. Bravo! Also, top notch editing.
I have done lathe work before, and knowing HOW DANGEROUS IT CAN BE, I HAVE MAD RESPECT FOR YOU YOUNG LADY. GREAT JOB.
Wow! That is super cool! And a beautiful work of art! Bravo! 👏
You said the pedestal blank weighed in at ~300lbs. Do you know what it weighed after turning?
You also said you would not be doing anymore of these. Why??
🤜🤛
RIP James. My woodworking friend just gave me a lathe and your videos are getting me excited to start using it! Even got a few bowl blanks to try on.
One of the first tables was my first introduction to you. I was amazed at the size. I'm still scared to turn a 21" platter lol.
Amazing. Very glad you found your calling in life not many can find it. Thanks for sharing and teaching us. Hoping one day to take one of your classes. God speed.
Why will this be your last one ?, no money in it ?, not interested ? Why ?, you'r so good at it!.
I get the impression that doing these scare her quite a lot and they are a massive mental and physical undertaking. She simply doesn't want to mess with them any longer. My .02.
I just learned so much! It's about time you got a UA-cam channel, Ashley. Your talent is rare. Thank you for sharing these experiences and processes.
