Excellent. Thanks for that. I'm confident in what I'm going to be able to pull off with a Surfy Bear added to my rig, and this has given me a good idea of that.
Love this episode, and love that you two can play in such a relaxed and beautiful way. I own the Surfy Classic and love it, but that Gamechanger is unbelievable (and I need to try it).
Fun exploration today guys! I've always prefered a subtle amount of the classic black panel combo of reverb & tremolo. I've used a Mr Black Deluxe Deluxe Plus for years, and the White Whale ticked all the tone boxes for me today. But I think I'd rather just play a black panel amp. So that's where my fun tokens are going in 2023. Happy New Gear to everyone!
I have a Surfy Bear Classic that I use with my Twin Reverb for Surf songs. Short of having a vintage Fender external reverb unit , it's a must have for that genre. Very authentic sounding. If you're on the fence...get it.
Its not in the budget right now so im getting the true spring. Eventually i want the surfy bear though for surf. I need to get better at surf lead though.
Great show as always, guys. Loved the white whale. On another note, kudos to Katherine and all she does. My wife Betty ordered me a TPS t-shirt for Christmas several weeks ago and got so worried when it wasn't here after a few weeks that she told me what she got me so I wouldn't be disappointed when there was nothing for me under the tree. Lo and behold, there lies All You Need Is Fuzz on the doorstep early on the 24th. Thanks Katherine, you rock.
😂 I love that the conclusion is « maybe I don’t want spring reverb in my new amp ». LOVED the Two Rock, WOW! I’m jealous. Happy to see TPS exploring using a dirty amp more. When I first heard of a dry/wet rig my first taught was dry = dirty amp and wet = pedal amp. I’m personally really happy with that set-up. The Light Pedal really spoke to me, the spring reverb was good enough but like usual GameChanger Audio added extra things to the pedal, so much fun for creativity. GREAT show!
Spring Reverbs are so different, because you feel it as much as you hear it and a Fender reverb tank is a wonderous thing! I always use Hall and Plate in the digital world!
I had a Light Pedal for a few months and loved it, but was frustrated by the inability to save presets and wound up selling it. I was forever tweaking between my favourite sounds, which is fine - there are so many great sounds in it - but a digital interface to enable saved settings would make it much more versatile for gigging and jamming. If they would release a deluxe version with an interface that allows saved presets I’d buy it without hesitation.
Short cables sitting on the amp in the effects loop and buffer off is the way to go! I build a unbufferd spring reverb with an old accutronics tank and the tombolas spring reverb driver circuit and it is simply magical. One of your best episodes!
An old friend of mine used to record his Guitar at home and I will never forget seeing this huge length of black plastic drain pipe in the corner of living room , it was his Reverb Tank , it was plugged into a Tascam 4 Track which sounded really good if you knew how to use it . Happy new year to you both , looking forward to next year's Videos.
What I like about the Carl Martin is you can somewhat control the decay of the sound with the damper adjuster at the front. Sometimes I find the tail on my TRRI a bit too long so I can dial in a more room like tail with the Headroom. Lovely pedal.
Glorious tone, guys. Reverb is a always on FX in my board. Even though I don't have a analog spring reverb, the Chase Bliss CXM 1978 is doing great for me.
very timely, I've just got my Surfbear Spring Reverb Unit - I've always wanted a Fender Reverb Unit and this is the next best thing. My Marshall SV20 doesn't have reverb and I'd forgotten what a splash of it does for making playing more enjoyable. I'll also say that there is some pre-amp magic going on there too even with the blend knocked off.
Merci pour les reverbs du spring! Well, thanks for everything this year really. 2022 was a banger of a year for TPS! Happy New Year fellas, off to wire up my G3 this weekend :)
They all sounded great to me ( with UA-cam going through my home old school hifi ) the white whale would be the one I’d buy out of the bunch ( for me the best compromise of tone, format, and that cool trem too) all academic tho as thanks to you my journey over the last couple of years has led me to a dual mono rig with a Blues Deluxe reissue, paired with the Victory V140D, which allows me to set the Fender to its classic reverb tone , and have the glorious V140 reverb set to full snuggly duvet, and use the foot switch to kill it when the gain is up ( achieving the two reverb settings Dan mentions which I agree is required for a varied gig ) Many thanks for helping me to get here, much love & Happy & Positive new year👍🎸😀
Episode two I highly recommend getting that Benson Stereo Tall Bird fixed, life changing spring reverb! Also potentially the wrought iron effects long wave? Great show boys!
@@ThatPedalShow yes, if you take a line out from the two rock and send it to the Mesa stereo rig as a wet signal it's glorious, or you could put it in a wetter box loop and use it to blend on top of your dry signal? I haven't tried the latter but I think it could work!
As a Reverb junkie, this has to be one of my favorite shows! I own 2 Surfybears, the C.M. Headroom and a tube reverb unit. So let's go. Edit: You should have added the SurfyBear Compact too, wich is more pedal friendly with 2 "presets" and true bypass. I own one first generation DIY Surfybear with the possibility to use different Spring Tanks. For me the Drip is a must have in a spring type pedal. So, besides the real springs there are about 20 reverb pedals on my shelf.
@@conanbrophy4406 I havent had a digital pedal where the spring has totally impressed me, the UA was good but small, med, large settings instead of finite reverb depth killed it for me. The MXR M300 is about the best overall digital imo. I would like to try the Mr. Black Deluxe but since ive got the SB compact, the Flint, the MXR and a two Princeton reverbs I dont need anything more
Surfybear also sells a footswitch that allows you to add a second setting to your Surfybear Classic, Compact, or even your Fender black panel amps. This way you can stomp and reduce the reverb when you play higher gain.
Awesome show guys!! I've been on a spring quest for years- ever since I got a hand-wired fender black-panel style amp. The amp is killer- and is 22w, so like a deluxe- but without reverb! (or trem- so sort of like a bassman). While I love the amp for that Fender sound, I really LOVE Fender reverb. My ideal might be the deluxe verb, but the super is of course fantastic. So, I;ve been searching for years to find a pedal that would give that same sense of depth and space. No luck! I even bought a 63 Spring tank (90s reissue) - but it's a whole different deal. The tank, which runs into the amp after the pedal board, is way to much. It;s awesome for that drippy surf sound, but it's too bright, too lively, too much for just an always on verb. It's cool, but it's not what I want. And if you hit it with a pedal (esp. fuzz) it's just out of control- very cool sound- if that's what you want- but too much for me most of the time. Currently I'm using a UAD Golden, and let me say- it's the closest thing to an amp reverb I've used. But, of course the quest continues right- and it would be awesome to have one of these real spring pedals. I have been eying the Anasound for awhile- thanks to you guys- but I have to say that in this video the Surfy Bear just WINS! It sounds huge and more like the amp verb than anything I've heard- at least on playback. Too bad it's so big- but maybe it just has to be to sound right? Anyway- thanks guys!!!
Short cables in the effects loop is the answer too, I think. But that doesn’t mean you have to leave it on all the time. Leave the reverb pedal at the amp, but get one that has a remote switch connection so you can still turn it on and off from your board. Then the audio doesn’t have to travel all the way to your board and back. Many spring reverb pedals have the remote switch capability.
I'm French and laughed pretty hard at the beginning of the show 😅 Thanks guys for what you do : great show that never got boring despite the fact that you guys have been doing this for quite a long time now. Keep it up ❤️
I never click away until I see the logo come back up. Seems rude to leave before ye all say goodbye! Thanks so much for this, my only amp has no reverb, but I find I really need the context when I play, because I normally just play alone. I'm looking for some options to upgrade to without having to change amps just yet. It really helps to see how the pedals work and affect each other, just to know what questions to ask movibg forward. Thanks again from Oregon, US!
As someone who also doesn’t like the sound and feel of buffers, I’ve found via many tests that Best Tronics CA-0446 cable sounds and feels best when using pedals in the loop as well as from pedal board to front of amp. It’s very low capacitance and is also a quite thick (24 gage) conductor. I think it’s this combination that makes it work well. To Mick’s and Dan’s points, it’s seemingly impossible to not affect the sound at all when driving an effects loop, but this cable will help, and possibly help you to remove buffers. Another option which I prefer when using amp distortion, is to use a line out box such as the Bray LO-1, which connects to the main amp’s speaker out which you then send to delay/reverb (preferably close to full wet mix) and then to a wet amp (even a much smaller amp can work well).
Quite an interesting niche in this episode and what's bizarre is you can make a case for each one. Going off the TS1 loop thing (as that was the point) when Mick turned them down as Dan played I legitimately thought they were off, that's how little verb was imparted. As that's sort of where Mick would set them for that amp I think he came to the right conclusion; the TS1 doesn't need a spring. As for pedals themselves the Light Pedal would be for me the most inspiring but only because it makes weird noises, I would never use it as just a spring. I like the Anasounds different tank size thing they do but, I'd just try them as tanks to swap with an amp with a tank as opposed to the fiddly pedal setup. White Whale would draw me most as a "Fender-izer" for any straight ahead amp. Not because of the reverb, but the tremolo; why would you not also have tremolo?! Headroom is unique sounding, Surfybear most traditional (and best at it). No wrong choices here.
Another great video! If memory serves, back in the day, Robben Ford used to run his 2290 delay in the Dumbleator loop and then split from there into a Super or Twin Reverb amp. So, he'd get delay from the TC 2290 in the Dumble effects loop, but the reverb from the Fender amp. Mick--I think you need to do a vlog trying this approach!
I love these shows- I have a source audio true spring (not true at all- digital!) but I’m now tempted to invest in a Schmidt array and use the whole bottom tray for the surfybear!!! Nice New Years GAS!
I already have nice Fender tube amp with great spring reverb... It's hard to compete with classic spring reverb so I thought that I didn't need one as a pedal. But Light Pedal changed my mind! A lot of experimental things to dig in for studio work and + you can use it as a classic spring reverb on gigs. Mmmm very nice!
I was tempted by a real spring reverb, but ended up getting the Subdecay Spring Theory, so I can stick to my 10 spaced pedalboard. Also, it has a decent room setting too.
Gee, I like all these real spring pedals for their various strengths. The Surfy Bear seems most like a standard Accutronics tank in a Fender amp but with more control, the Headroom is nice and drippy, the White Whale is pretty smooth and has a great tremolo, The Anasounds is really versatile with its EQ, and the Light Pedal is really experimental. I have a Light Pedal and really like blending the spring and optical together, then fine-tuning the sound with the Drive, Tone and Gate controls. It does kind of like to take over the guitar sound and draw attention to itself, which is both a strength and weakness, but I've ended up using it on several tracks already, even running drum tracks through it once for certain parts of a song.
Love you guys exploring reverb always. It's this sortve thing that got me amped to make my first pedal purchase since the rat back in 1998.. the white whale! Lives in my loops. Love it. Rock on dudes
I built a surfy bear kit, not sure if they're still doing that, into an old toolbox and used a accutonics spring tank. It sounds awesome, it's a fun project
So I think it sounds like the optical light reverb is the overwhelming favorite? It has a real darkness and lushness that is pretty sweet sounding. I'm surprised how much I like the simple spring reverb sound over the surfy bear
Excellent video 👍 I have a surfy blue Large SurfyBear pedal and love it 👍Nice to see it stand out .I also have a Danelectro DSR-1 Spring King with crash which is also outstanding 👍
I know it’s not what you were doing- but on a rewatch I’d have loved to have heard one great digital emulation thrown in there. just to compare a bit- maybe a SA Collider or something. Loved to have heard if the recorded difference is very obvious.
Reverb is that one thing I just can’t replace my old fender spring tank. In the days of modelers for me fuzz and reverbs are the two things I have not gone in the digital path for .
Snap same happened to my Headroom.Easy enough to replace with a new green light and solder onto the board. Great reverb but induces a bit of hum at higher settings.
Hi D&M. All of the pedals had something different to offer. For me the Surfy Bear was the 'purest', but man, it's a big pedal!. I thought that the Light pedal had the widest range of sounds and the Anasounds had the most 'character'. For me though, the sound of the day was Dan's tele into the TS1 with some gain when you first turned on the Headroom. That amp is really something Special. Mick's LP sounded so thick!
Cheers guys. They all sounded good to me though the Gamechanger Light clearly has a lot more going on than the others, I shall have to investigate, it sounds like my kind of weird. The latest discovery in my personal journey is: if I smile while playing I have better overall tone and sustain. I'm rationalising this as: if I anticipate something good happening maybe it's more likely to. Dunno really. Liking the results though. Happy New Year. :)
I'm a reverb junkie too, can't play without it! Surfy bear has the classic blackface sound, but for me the gamechanger light pedal had a wonderful full sound.....plus all the cool effected tones. Might have to pick one up although I still love my neunaber Stereo Wet. BTW the TS-1 sounds incredible, and I agree with Mick about a plate reverb which is what Robben runs most of the time these days.
I'm wary that this might be the compression talking, but the GA had a hifi "crispness" that caught my ear every time it came on. If I was going to pick one it would be that.
Hi....Happy New Year. Liked the episode. I have a reverb episode request: - Strymon recently updated their BlueSky digital reverb pedal (to "version 2"). - Both the new Bluesky V2 & the BigSky have their versions of Spring Reverb as well as other reverb types. - Would love to see these 2 pedals compared; hear about their use cases (ex: is Blue Sky more intuitive in live situations) - and hear from you how their algorithms compare to the above "real" versions. Hope it was ok to make the above request on this thread. :)
With every week that goes by, I love that TS1 more and more. It’s exceptional. Love my CLRS but man, the grit on that TS1….Can’t wait to see a comparison sometime. Both fantabulous of course. Just wish I could buy talent. Maybe Simon Jarrett can do a preamp for that (I say that as a huuuuuge fan of his work)
I’m convinced that something in the UA-cam compression soup eats some of the reverb. The reverb in the final video always seems less than what the presenters report that they are hearing. It happens here and on the Anderton’s channel for sure. I’m listening through big speakers so it’s not that. I could definitely hear reverb in this video but there were times where it was almost impossible to hear. I’ve noticed it in a lot of videos.
I haven’t tried all those, but since I bought the CTC WW I’ve stopped looking for other external spring reverbs. Love it. An it has a great classic amp style tremolo, plus a boost. What’s not to love with that?
I inherited my Grandfather’s 1968 Super Reverb silverface with the drip edge several years ago. It’s a transitional year, so it’s still the blackface circuit. Oh and his 1960 Gretsch anniversary guitar. His old rig essentially. How cool is that? 😄
I and a lot of people I think would love to know about you guys more and your guitar journey, how did you get into guitar, and how did you learn to play? You guys are both amazing players and a lot of people are beginning their journey how did you get to this point as players
Now the program that will allow me to ask: What happens if I put 3 spring tanks in series and feedback the output with the input (eg., creating a delay effect but with springs instead of bucket brigade devices)? Will the number of springs in each tank make some difference? Is this the secret of Vincent Bell's watery sound (as in Airport 70 love theme)? I really believe so. This is one Holy Grail and this is for your skills as a "discrete effect" maker, Dan . Best wishes for the New year and hoping for lot more of excellent programs. Schuck, Jr.
I can’t wait to check this episode out. My practice amp is a Marshall Origins 50w and it doesn’t have reverb. Options like in this video are worth exploring!
@@everynotecountsofficial I was being a little facetious. I’ve actually been curious about those amps. I’ve been looking for some English flavor amps for quite some time. I’ve gone through an AC-15, an Orange rocker 15 and rockerverb 30 trying to find something I like. I ended up trading the rockerverb for a vibrolux, I love fender amps, but now that’s all I have are fenders, lol. The Origin line seems like it might be an option.
@@smelltheglove2038 I like it a lot. It’s supposed to be kind of a plexi amp on a budget. I mostly played my Fender Blues Jr, then got Fender’s Bassbreaker, which kind of blurs the line between Fender and Marshall. It made me “Marshall curious,” and I’m very happy that I explored the Origin series.

So that's where my fun tokens are going in 2023.
Happy New Gear to everyone!
Agree - nothing as pleasing to me, as my 65 Fender Princeton Reverb. (even owning a Big Sky and all it's Magic)
I sold mine bc it isn't true bypass
Thanks for bringing spring time in the middle of winter
Nice to see/hear the Super again. It's been awhile.
The Light Pedal is something special! Really neat piece of gear.
Giving you a nod 🤙. Fun to hear all of these side by side. When I watch, I always watch the whole episode 👍
32:32 Dan stole Micks Davey G lick! Great show as always!
Short cables sitting on the amp in the effects loop and buffer off is the way to go! I build a unbufferd spring reverb with an old accutronics tank and the tombolas spring reverb driver circuit and it is simply magical. One of your best episodes!
Started the new year with this. Happy New Year!
Big fan of the light pedal, I love spring reverb and bought it on a whim, and I have been extremely impressed. Oh, and yes, I did see the end.
I’m only 3 mins and I’m so glad you guys have done this!!
Glorious tone, guys. Reverb is a always on FX in my board.
Even though I don't have a analog spring reverb, the Chase Bliss CXM 1978 is doing great for me.
Nice way to ‘Spring’ back after Xmas!
🤦♂️😂
very timely, I've just got my Surfbear Spring Reverb Unit - I've always wanted a Fender Reverb Unit and this is the next best thing. My Marshall SV20 doesn't have reverb and I'd forgotten what a splash of it does for making playing more enjoyable. I'll also say that there is some pre-amp magic going on there too even with the blend knocked off.
So it changes the sound even with no reverb mixed in? Does it add any harshness or fakeness at all?
I’m only a very occasional reverb user, but I just may find myself using it a bit more after this awesome show! Thanks fellas, and I love what you do.
Picked up a surfy bear a few weeks back, it is incredible ❤
An hour of TPS spring reverb talk?!?! Best way to start my Friday morning before the long weekend. Cheers, D&M. 😁
This episode convinced me how much I love playing guitar with a gentle reverb. I need an upgrade. Happy new year guys.
Lovely as always, gents. Happy holidays!
Merci pour les reverbs du spring! Well, thanks for everything this year really. 2022 was a banger of a year for TPS! Happy New Year fellas, off to wire up my G3 this weekend :)
They all sounded great to me ( with UA-cam going through my home old school hifi ) the white whale would be the one I’d buy out of the bunch ( for me the best compromise of tone, format, and that cool trem too) all academic tho as thanks to you my journey over the last couple of years has led me to a dual mono rig with a Blues Deluxe reissue, paired with the Victory V140D, which allows me to set the Fender to its classic reverb tone , and have the glorious V140 reverb set to full snuggly duvet, and use the foot switch to kill it when the gain is up ( achieving the two reverb settings Dan mentions which I agree is required for a varied gig ) Many thanks for helping me to get here, much love & Happy & Positive new year👍🎸😀
SURFYBEAR and Light Pedal for me. Great video, as usual. Love you guys, happy New Year!
I like the light pedal a lot. Great job!
Episode two I highly recommend getting that Benson Stereo Tall Bird fixed, life changing spring reverb! Also potentially the wrought iron effects long wave? Great show boys!
But it doesn’t pass dry signal, so won’t work in the loop of the Two Rock!?
They should add the compact's features to the metal, personally happy with the compact
which spring is your favourite and which emulation?
@@craiger2399Pretty sure it only works with an amp or the Classic
Argh. I fear this makes much sense. We’re galloping towards a little rack back at the amp and a G3 extension kit. Arrrrghhhhh!
I'm French and laughed pretty hard at the beginning of the show 😅
Thanks guys for what you do : great show that never got boring despite the fact that you guys have been doing this for quite a long time now.
Sorry, correction: CA-0446 is 20 gage (not 24 gage, as I mis-typed, which is actually quite thin for a long cable!)
Wait til next week’s show. Not quite that, but certainly a long way in that direction!
I love these shows- I have a source audio true spring (not true at all- digital!) but I’m now tempted to invest in a Schmidt array and use the whole bottom tray for the surfybear!!! Nice New Years GAS!
It was fantastic! I always learn so much and it was a joy to hear you both play. Everything sounded amazing. Happy New Year all!
Great to see the Super again ! BFSR for the win ! cheers
Thanks for all you do. Happy New Year to you!
Thats a great video. All the classics.
Excellent per usual; just wishing the TPS family and supporters a very Happy New Year. May 2023 be rife with tone and all things that go to eleven 😘.
The Surfy Bear is big…..but magic! I have digital all in one’s but Surfy is the sound of spring other’s aspire to.
Got a Surfy Bear 2x days ago, used it with my digital mixer at a gig as an external effect. Sounds great!
Happy New Years gents! Thanks for bringing us into the new year in luscious reverb style!
Headroom has a low mid tone the others don’t. Surfy bear is fantastic, and very surprised by the lightroom. Great show!
We talked about doing that. In our opinion they’re still a mile off, so we just kept it to the analogue things. Cheers!
I enjoyed the flute interlude.
Ha! Awesome discovery!
I can't play without reverb any more. It may only be a spring emulation on a Keeley caverns 2 but I love it.
I bought all of them because they all sound the same ... sound GREAT!
Enjoyed the episode guys ,thanks for the knowledge 👍🎶
The Surfy Compact is on my short list.
I'm a reverb junkie too, can't play without it! Surfy bear has the classic blackface sound, but for me the gamechanger light pedal had a wonderful full sound.....plus all the cool effected tones. Might have to pick one up although I still love my neunaber Stereo Wet. BTW
the TS-1 sounds incredible, and I agree with Mick about a plate reverb which is what Robben runs most of the time these days.
I'm wary that this might be the compression talking, but the GA had a hifi "crispness" that caught my ear every time it came on. If I was going to pick one it would be that.
Hi....Happy New Year. Liked the episode.
I have a reverb episode request:
- Strymon recently updated their BlueSky digital reverb pedal (to "version 2").
- Both the new Bluesky V2 & the BigSky have their versions of Spring Reverb as well as other reverb types.
- Would love to see these 2 pedals compared; hear about their use cases (ex: is Blue Sky more intuitive in live situations)
- and hear from you how their algorithms compare to the above "real" versions.
Get outta town! With respect to your ol’ granddad, that dood was RULING
I and a lot of people I think would love to know about you guys more and your guitar journey, how did you get into guitar, and how did you learn to play? You guys are both amazing players and a lot of people are beginning their journey how did you get to this point as players
I use and love the Mad Professor Silver Springs Reverb. Small and Love it!
Great video. I thought the Headroom was an unsung hero. I don't really care about crazy features, and I thought it did perfect small tank sound.
Schuck, Jr.
The Anasounds and SurfyBear were my favorites. Im curious how the Anasounds with the large tank sounds in comparison to the SurfyBear.
I can’t wait to check this episode out. My practice amp is a Marshall Origins 50w and it doesn’t have reverb. Options like in this video are worth exploring!
50w practice amp!!!! Good lord! Where do you practice? Hampton Coliseum?
@@smelltheglove2038 hahaha, it has a built in attenuator and a very smooth volume knob so I hardly ever crank it. I bought it for the headroom.
