Creator of the Hannibal TV Show Bryan Fuller is a big fan of the Vampire Chronicles, he was one of the creators when first talks started about adapting it in 2018, when Christopher Rice wanted to adapt it himself but then left. Bryan said that Hannibal was inspired by relationship in IWTV
5:52 yeah it’s kind of like that, because Will has that empathy disorder or “pure empathy” as Hannibal called it he’s intrigued because he thinks Will can empathise with him and he’s very interested in him!
I love how much you love this show already. It's my favorite show of all time (Interview with the Vampire has become a really close second) and I can't wait until you get further into it because the dialogue and the storylines are absolutely brilliant and some of the best writing I have ever seen.
Hannibal makes so many inside jokes, so many cannibal puns, it's hilarious. The show starts out pretending to be a police procedural, at least a little, but that pretense is gone very fast, and barely there to begin with. You're not supposed to follow it along like you would a regular police procedural where you find out about the evidence and motives along with the characters. I've read a description of the show that said: "Will vibrates at a crime scene, utters some creepy lines about murderous design, and then they arrest the killer based on Will's dream." And, well. It is kind of true. Bryan Fuller told a director of a couple of episodes that he wanted the episode to look like a pretentious 80s art film. The show leans into that even more as time goes on, and I love that aesthetic.
God, the dialogue in Hannibal is pure poetry! Hannibal and Will's conversations are the best! I love seeing new viewers predictions about characters and story lines too, always expected the unexpected with Hannibal. And yes its 'that kind of show' just not the guesses you've made so far. So glad you're doing two episode a week soon!
there is SO MUCH great dialogue in this show, and quite a few very funny dark jokes, such as the cannibal puns but also the recovering alcoholic joke, "oh im not recovering" that are so quick and witty!! since the show's ending the original scripts for each episode have been released so since you're a film person and might be interested: here are my favorite script directions and dialogue from this episode! ~ HANNIBAL: I'm not sure therapy will work on you. Stealing into other minds has taught you how to fortify your own. WILL GRAHAM: That's what I said. HANNIBAL: What you need is a way out of dark places when Jack sends you there. The simplicity of that strikes Will. ~ Pleurotus Nidiformis to be exact, its stem sprouting from a quilt-work of moist SOIL and DECAYING MATTER. Suddenly, the soil and decay (along with the mushroom) are parted to expose the broken-down, yet unmistakable features of a HUMAN FACE. CAMERA REVEALS the face belongs to a naked MAN being pulled from the ground by EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIANS. Not that his nakedness is an issue, as most of the man's body is covered in a morbidly vibrant kingdom of fungus and mold. ~ HANNIBAL: I am. It wasn't the act of killing Hobbs that got you down, was it? Did you really feel so bad because killing him felt so good? Will weighs that statement, finally admitting to Hannibal: WILL GRAHAM: I liked killing Hobbs. HANNIBAL: Killing must feel good to God, too. He does it all the time, and are we not created in his image? WILL GRAHAM: Depends who you ask. HANNIBAL: God's terrific. He dropped a church roof on thirty-four of his worshippers last Wednesday night in Texas, while they sang a hymn. WILL GRAHAM: Did God feel good about that? HANNIBAL: He felt powerful. OFF HANNIBAL, seizing the chance to play God himself ~
I love all reaction youtubers just have the urge to say "Hannibal" any time his name appears in text on screen 😭 Also, as you mentioned the red, i'd like to mention that in every scene, they made it a point to have red in some way, shape or form. Either blood, the walls, curtains or clothing. It really adds to the atmosphere of the show!!
I'm not surprised you had a subscriber spike due to reacting to Hannibal! It's basically got a cult following at this point. This show eventually was the reason I got into IWTV, and generally just became a horror fan. I first watched season 1 when I was 16, I was a massive wuss but this show desensitised me 😂🖤
I can't explain HOW much I'm exited to see your reaction to the next episodes!! Hannibal is totally the most mind-blowing series I know. please, continue watching!
Im so glad you really appreciate this show. It isn’t for everyone. And you are spot on with the IWV comparison. Hannibal and Lestat would be great friends😂 (and Lois and Will would suffer together so beautifully!)
The name Hannibal has been around since at least the Punic wars almost 2.5k years ago. To be fair, the Romans probably had a similar impression to Hannibal Barka as we do to Dr. Lector😅
"How are you, Will?" "I'm good thankyou." Heh. My given name is Neal, and in Kenobi, when Darth Vader said "You have done well. Kneel" I'd just made some tea, and I couldn't help but say "Thankyou, Lord Vader!"
Thoughts on this episode of Hannibal?

When it comes to Hannibal, it is always safe to assume that all the food (and more of the beverage than you might think possible) is people.
everything here is vegetarian * wink wink * LOL

I love mushrooms, it made me hungry. Fair warning, the show gets pretty weird and gory.
