Answer to question #2: I believe anyone that gets off on secretly recording people is sick in the head and that is always a precursor to something worse, in my opinion of course.
I’m curious about his upraising…especially in regards to his mother’s efforts. How involved was she? Did she nurture him as a mother would be expected to do or was she emotionally detached? Maybe she didn’t want to take the time to be there for him and model values and moral behavior. Paying off that family to keep silent was her way of avoiding conflict with her son. Maybe she closed her eyes to the sick, perverted behavior of her son because she didn’t want to bother with it? I would like to know more about this mother.
From what his friends said it seems that she is a classic enabler and the type of person who treated SS abusively and then made it up to him with excessive gift giving. Your question is right on the mark. I think you know what you’re talking about when you ask it, and you are looking in the right direction.

In my opinion:
Nurture doesn't have to come from parents. It can come from other things a person is exposed to, especially at a young age. Anything can trigger a physical response that can be misunderstood by a child.
I do think Sterns adapted his compulsive behaviors throughout his life in an attempt to go unnoticed and therefore unpunished. This adapting is what made it possible for the behaviors to escalate.

Congratulations on getting the interviews with Sterns’ (presumably, ex) friends. They were very enlightening and worthwhile.
Nature. The movie “The Bad Seed” is a dead ringer description of an evil child. It only gets worse as they get older, growing better at their craft with each victory.
I think it's both. Nature,and Nurture.
That Jewish adoption agency Louise Wise that did that secret study on multiples although it was never finished seemed to definitely indicate it's both .
In pictures of him when he was younger without a beard and mustache; he looks somewhat genetically strange. His facial proportions are off. This makes me think he could be genetically predisposition Ed with his environment setting off his miswiring or faulty genetics. It's also possible that those with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) can be prone to "acting out".

Hello, new follower and first time commenting. I feel as though a man with that "look" in his eyes when he was in the back of the car in cuffs had a vibe that he was like this all along. I. My opinion you don't just say hey let me try this out with my gf's daughter. No way on He[[ should that mom have not only let him share a bed owner her daughter but even suggest it. He should have been against that from day 1! I've missed a lot only this case lately I need to catch up
I think his Mum's personality had something to do with it. To do with childhood trauma and attachment issues.
My personal answer to Question #1: I believe he has been his whole life. That could have fueled his mother's frustration with him. Maybe the mental and verbal abuse fed his obsession to get away with deviant behavior. I have a sibling that is a child predator and my mom was out of her mind trying to keep him away from children or younger girls. He still offended, and it literally put so much anger inside of my mom that it got taken out on anyone that got her bad side that day. She even resorted to calling and warning every female he had relations with or was known to be around. He still found ways to offend. I believe Stephan had a similar effect on his mother. Possibly. That's just a theory I have. I could be totally wrong.
However, my mom did hold my brother accountable as loudly as she knew how to. She wanted everyone to be safe from his dangerous capabilities. Sounds like SS's mother tried to help cover it up, maybe out of denial and/or embarrassment 🤷
@@lacieglaab5899. One of Sterns’ friends said that when Sterns was 21 he had a 14 yr old girlfriend. He said that Sterns’ wealthy mother paid the girlfriend’s family not to report him to the police. So the mother definitely knew that something was wrong with him, even if she didn’t know about all his sick habits.
In this case I think it's both nurture and nature, his mom comes across as having a few issues, so he's probably inherited those, plus I suspect he's been abused by her in some way. The main thing is that he knows right from wrong and he should pay for all the suffering he's caused.

All psychopaths are born (nature) with a genetic change but not all of them develop (nurture) to act out in psychopathic ways. That being said, I do not know if SS is a diagnosed psychopath or if he has some other personality disorder such as Antisocial Personality Disorder, which is the updated term for what they used to refer to as Sociopath. I would think he will be diagnosed before his trial if he hasn’t been already and it wouldn’t surprise me to find out that he has NPD, with ASPD and is a Psychopath. I also believe that he is a Sadist, but not just that, a S Sadist. Because he took advantage of people in a vulnerable situation, for example he preyed on a young girl who he saw as having daddy issues and swept in to have her call him her “Bonus Dad”, I would say he has Machiavellian traits as well. If all of these are correctly identified by a professional then what he have is known as The Dark Tetrad.

He definitely had to adapt as each time he was caught out taught him he needed to change his behaviours to avoid being caught. Pity it didn't teach him he was wrong but getting paid off meant he got away with it

Answer to question #3: he absolutely adapted, of course that is my opinion. Had he not adapted, he would have been caught way sooner than he was. He became a pro and quite frankly obsessed with having a secret life. That started from somewhere.
Also,it seems that these individuals are narcissistic due to the fact that they have no empathy for their victims but only concerned with their needs.

Question 1- Nature..He chose to do the unorthodox methods on how one relates and associates in the world.
Question 2- He was into BOTH.. being the Voyeur and Voyeuree. He enjoyed being seen in uncompromising moments. Stephan was the Voyeur with the camera and taking pictures of a friends mother while she was in the bathroom, He was the Voyeuree when he would “accidently” take a shower,walk into the room where Madeline was without a towel on.Wanting her to be “shocked or aroused in a way “.
Question 3- Yes, he adapted well after he was caught peeping. How? By the usage of hidden cameras at various areas of a home.
You mentioned of him “Selling” the images he collected. I , still think he is connected with the man who looks like Santa Claus..James Cox who lived not too far away from where Madeline was dumped.

Nature and nurture. In this case. It seems he was born with a propensity to do deviant behavior. Mother only made his behavior worse. I do wonder if he was abused as a small kid and was taught the behavior and it took off from there. Then it would be nuture. I’m not sure.

He became more secretive after the outside incident. He started using a hidden indoor camera and then there was evidence that he was also seeking online images of children. Perhaps defining his taste in specific material.
