I'm going to comment here so that another "home mechanic" researching this topic doesn't have to go through the pain that I did. First of all, thanks for making this video. I watched several videos before trying my impeller change for the first time. So long story short, nowhere in the the service manual or owner's manual does it say to drain the engine oil before dropping the lower unit. To my surprise, I had a flood of engine oil pouring out when I removed the shaft and dropped the gear box. I tried to research the problem on line and found a few people who had the same problem, but what they were being told was they had a costly engine oil leak and would need major repairs. This just didn't sound right to me, because I could see a hole at the top of the opening where the drive shaft stops, and my motor wasn't leaking before, so I started to do more research. I won't go into detail, but the bottom line is that at least on my 2013 115EFI Four Stroke, you need to drain the engine oil before removing the gear case. I confirmed this with three different Mercury certified mechanics and called Mercury customer service. I realize that a 2002 90hp may be different than a 2013 115, but I just wanted to mention this so someone else doesn't make a mess like I did.
Thanks a lot for the video ! Boat newbie here that need a video like yours to understand how to do it. I don't have the history of the outboard so I will change the impeller. Your video was clear, simple and well made. Thanks again !
Question. In your packet of o-ring seals, there a large black o-ring. Where does that used? I done this service twice, always get the o-ring but never found a place to install it.
Great video, will help a lot. Need to do mine this year. Not done on a merc before, what position do you leave the throttle in, in or out of gear before removing. Thanks
Hello Why do you put it in gear? Does this make it easier to remove the lower unit? I have a 115hp and the lower unit will not come off. I’m wondering if I put it in forward gear will it help.....? Thanks!
You put into a gear so you can align the cogs on the shaft to lower end cog by turning the prop when slipping drive shaft fully up into top housing. so you dont need to turn the fly wheel on the motor to make slight adjustment .
Hi. Tell me how to put forward. In what direction to turn the rod on the gearbox. And I for not knowing took it to neutral. Which way the propeller is spinning when you turn forward when viewed from the propeller?
If your engine is overheating and you want to check the water pump use a tub of water not a pressure hose---dont ask me how I know--the first thing you should do any way is change the W Pump
Thank you for sharing this awesome video. The manual you’re referring to sounds much better than the Seloc I have. Does mercury sell a service manual at a good price? Thanks again!
Excellent Video. Thanks for sharing. I have a Mercury 90 HP 2 cycle 3 cylinders 2008 engine. Would the Quicksilver part no. you show, be the same for my engine?
Doubt it. Look up the part number by engine serial number or model and year at marineengine.com. There are schematics there, of course look under lower unit.
Thanks for great video, I have a.2006 90 4stroke, can anyone answer a couple questions Do I need to drain engine oil? Does shift linkage need disconnecting? Thanks Steve
No need to drain the engine oil on my 2008 60HP EFI Four Stroke...simply remove the 4 bolts and lower unit slides right off. I put it in neutral before dropping the lower unit.
I don't believe the plate contributes much unless there is severe damage. Replacing just the impeller is more cost effective. In this case the issues I was having were due to a broken water pipe clamp and exhaust plate corrosion.
@@TheFritz423 when looking for the impeller all i found was the "kits"...they had all the parts...it gave me the chance of looking at the seal..it looked fine but seeing how it was "new"i figure just replace it in case it might have been worn...it's a well i have the part just do a thorough lob deal
@@TheFritz423 there are many videos on fixing the impeller and i just watched the one where you rebuilt the mid section of your 90..did you ever do the next one where you installed the lower unit to the build..ive went to ur channel and didnt see the follow up on it...im curious to know what the slide shaft position should be of the shaft under the powerhead..if the lower unit is in neutral when installing...the shaft has to be in alignment with lower unit
@@TheFritz423 theres a notch on the top of the shaft that go's to the lower unit...thats where i put it.. then i shifted the lower till i found neutral..i mated them together and it seems to be correct

There's no engine oil in a 2-stroke. That's what the ELPTO is.

Lol same with my 2014 90HP. Was quite a surprise to do an oil change. Easy $60 mistake

Thank you for making this video. I have a 2001, 90hp, getting ready to change the lower unit seals as well as the impeller . Huge help!
Thank you for your knowledge and expertise
Awesome instructions, I appreciate it!
I bought an 2006 pontoon with this exact engine. Thank you for showing me all this.
Hope it helps!
Great video. No bull, straight to the point. Thank you.
Thank you for showing what rtv and 2-4-c grease and where I should put it when reassembling. Time to hit some waves!
Thanks for the video? Should it be in forward or neutral?
Best video on how to do this by far.
The kit came with a few other washers you never showed where they go ?
Good job bro and saved the service fee for some shop.
Not to mention waiting a month or more. Thanks!

I believe you refer to the face seal. ua-cam.com/video/6xA0e9miTrg/v-deo.html
Thanks for information and the steps to do this procedure :-)
Hello, I’m doing my water pump now, it was put together by someone and forgot to put in a few parts,
Where do the other orings that came in the kit?
With mine there were extra o-rings that I believe went below the water pump base.
Spot on, thank you for this and most clear video I've seen done on it! Perfect 👌👍
I like the mounting design. Why forward gear and not Nutral?
No particular reason other than it's certain you're in forward when the throttle is forward. Neutral can be iffy.
Great video, will help a lot. Need to do mine this year. Not done on a merc before, what position do you leave the throttle in, in or out of gear before removing. Thanks
The book says forward
other videos suggest using white lithium grease spray...inside the impeller housing. Can I just use that on the bolts too?
Really good tutorial
any guidance or comments on the torque settings when re-tightening the 10mm bolts and 15mm nuts?
I don’t use a torque wrench, don’t know anyone who does. After 20 years nothings fallen off…
All good with that, cheers. Will now get on with the job!@@TheFritz423
Hello jist saw you video thanks question there's a rubber tube on the outside of motor in the back do you know what that is
Probably the old speedometer line
What propeller is that . I see it has a 18 inch pitch. What brand of propeller.
I got the same outboard, can you list the part number of the impeller? There are many knockoffs, they all kist only the original p/n for comparison.
Do you have to disconnect shift rod before removing lower unit? Thanks
Not on this model
Great video, thanks!
How do you know when to replace it

Great to the point video !
There's a seal on top of the water pump that is missing...WTH...NOT GOOD
My lower end still come come out after all nuts remove and rubber mallet taps. Any suggestions? Tap harder?
There is a fifth bolt to remove besides the four 5/8inch bolts....

can someone please explain how a USA made Eltpto has all metric fixings?
What would happen if you did get Grease on the top of the drive shaft?
@Theoretically hydro lock the shaft so it can't be removed again.
An excellent video.
Not so good he forgot top seal
Why no grease on top of the shaft
Grease on top of the shaft can cause a hydrolock making it very difficult to remove the lower unit next time.
Thanks bud
from other video it said grease can get into crank housing area from top of shaft.
Grease will keep the shaft from seating in place, ok on sides, excess will just slide off. Grease on end will get trapped

Did you see there was no top seal on impela cover when he took it apart. And he did not put new one on .same question Why???
@@anthonydale4158 The "face seal" is pretty much considered an insignificant part. Most people don't mess with it.
The "face seal" isn't considered very important. But it has since been replaced.
after i put lower unit back on, throttle was stuck in forward do i need to take lower unit back off to fix?
Yes
LOL, book said so but it doesn't sound right so... efit!
Tuber dick... this is for a two stroke or two cycle if you want. There is no engine oil my bud.
It ain’t a “ Woodruff key” it’s just a key. Just sayin!!!
Thank you very much!
