- For over a century, Nickel Plate Road steam locomotive no. 587 has always had the ability to put smiles on faces and memories in hearts. But her journey from then to now has been anything but average. So let’s recap 100 years of 587’s history to show how unique this locomotive's journey has been.
2024 UPDATE: Ownership of No. 587 transferred from the Indiana Transportation Museum to a private individual in 2021. It remains stored in Ravenna, Ky., with the Kentucky Steam Heritage Corporation. Future plans are unknown.

I agree the 587 was my favorite engine of all time hey man guess what the 587's restoration will be completed in 1472 days it means in 4 years en the year 2024 i got twern feelings everyone was exited to make the locomotive run again make a lot of money and i will drive this locomotive
@@CarlosLopez-tj2tc Sorry buddy I think you got it wrong, 1472 is the number of days a steam locomotive can operate after the boiler inspection is complete. Depending on the money involved and volunteers the actual work to be done can take longer than that. Also 587 is parked out of the way at Ravenna I doubt it's being worked on right now. They are busy restoring C&O 2716.

The 587 is my favorite locomotive and I grew up with the locomotive in the movie 587 the great train robbery and every time I hear a steam locomotive or seen one it makes me want to cry because these machines they are beautiful and they need to be preserved as part of America and railroad history.

Yea. It was built in September of 1918. It's a common misconception that it was built in August of 1918.

Absolutely great video, seeing this and seeing the train run again was absolutely amazing. I used to work on the ITM and got to see 587 in the "repair Shop". Seeing a locomotive compared to a Diesel Engine is just no comparison. I loved the 426, 83A, and 200 for the state fair train. But the 587 is just something different. Awesome video! Thank you for the information behind this legendary locomotive.

I remember when I was little, I would used to see 587 The Great Train Robbery all the time. It was my favorite movie. Every summer, I would go to the Illinois Railway Museum, and I would love going to see all the steam locomotives. It’s been several years since I’ve gone there, and I hope that I can go another time. The museum is known for having a scene from a transformers movie being shot there, and I’ve been there also. I hope that the 587 gets restored soon.
Thanks Pennsy Productions. I had no idea what happened to 587 after 2010. She is the first steam locomotive I ever knew and my very favorite.
After years of hearing snippets of this venerable locomotive's story via books, VHS tapes, and occasional UA-cam videos, it is really nice to get the whole picture on its life in the past and present day. Hopefully in the not too distant future, NKP 587 is able to ply the rails again. Great video as always.
Old 587 The Great Train Robbery I remember renting the Movie and it still one of my favorvite train movies ever with Silver Streak 1976 and Murder On The Orient Express 1974 and 2017.
That movie was where I first saw her.
My favorite train movie is The Taking Of Pelham One Two Three 1974 version, I would really recommend it

The 587 was technically a New York Central locomotive since the LE&W was a subsidiary until being sold to the NKP in the 1920s.

I’m so sad 😞 cuz the 587 is my most favorite train of all time and you saying it’s future is uncertain makes me thing it will be scrapped. So when I grow up I will find a place for the 587 to run and save it !

It's not necessary. For one thing, ITM already has enough to worry about without restoring another locomotive. Additionally, the 624, an identical Mikado, is already a potential candidate for operation.

I hope I get to see 587 run again but it makes me mad that if they didint move everything from the museum the government wold scrap all that's behind. People dont take this type of stuff seriously

587's tender wasn't originally assigned to 639. It was an addition ordered by the NKP from Lima as replacements for the smaller tenders. This allowed the mikados to remain economical as steam became more expensive.

587 Great Train Robbery was a good movie. How Ironic just like the movie it was in danger of getting scrapped.
On a personal note, I believe 587 needs new owners. I’m not sure which one, though Steamtown is on my table, but ITM hasn’t been worthy about being good Caretakers of her.
If Steamtown were to own her she would sit rusting, and never run again. The ITM is capable of owning her, they just fell upon hard times. Of which they are slowly climbing out of by running in a new location, and operating trains.

I still haven’t gotten over this locomotive. I still hold it against those people because I was really looking forward to seeing the 587 under her own power. This still pisses me off and still tears me apart that I was not able to see this locomotive.

It seems that the Kentucky steam heritage corporation might be interested in picking up the Lease for 587
The 587 is still owned by ITM and is getting restored very slowly, since funds for the engine are scarce. KSHC is simply providing a temporary home for the engine until ITM can move her back to Indiana again. Additionally, I’m sure KSHC has their hands full with 2716 and the former RJ Corman 2-10-2, so adding 587 to their fleet permanently would be a lot to undertake for any nonprofit.

You might want to update this. ITM no longer owns 587. She has a new owner now which the owner wants to keep his/her identity private. She has a much better chance now to be restored then under ITM's ownership.

Not only that. She also stared in lots and lots of trains vol 1 and chop chop trains close up and very personal but what I don’t like about 587 in lots and lots of trains is that it had a HORRIBLE whistle
It was her normal whistle. It just cracked from over-usage. The engineers of the time found that blowing the whistle was easier than the steam release. So it eventually cracked.
