      I have a cunning plan, I read the French an German Press. I learn more about Britain and its news from Le Monde and Die Zeit than any British newspaper, . Some one said I was lucky' as if they came by Osmosis. No idea I might have had to learn them, but a French Education was a help. To read a Tabloid was a disgrace at school. A Newspaper monsieur is a civil instrument not an amusement arcade.

    The best way to judge if a paper is right wing or not is to see the headline on its front page. Most of the print media in the UK are obsessed with the Royal Family, yet cannot comment about the dire financial state of the country, its people and its infrastructure. If Labour manage to win the next general election, these same papers will be spouting on and on about the subjects it ducked away from.

      Current immigration figures and trends are making Brits poorer. "Right leaning" media highlight the mass uncontrolled immigration that's driving down wages, job availability, inflating housing costs and putting pressure i.e. decreasing quality of public services. Polling suggests immigration is consistently high on people's concerns

    • @paulhammond6978

      A good comment. I guess it's all a feedback loop, but to the extent that the press downplay problems when we have a Tory government and play them up when it's Labour, maybe that's a reason why so many conservative voters remain convinced for ever that you can't trust any Labour government with the economy.

    • @leod-sigefast

      @nikobellic570 no it isn't. Conservative voters maybe. But the Economy, NHS, a well ahead of concerns for the majority. The so-called "immigration crisis" is 100% created by the Tories as a distraction technic. They do it all the time, instead of running the country. Before about 2020 there was hardly any boat migrant issue. We are no longer part of the EU returns agreement, for one. That was torpedoed by the Tories for their "Brexit purity" project. So, no, most people want these Tories OUT and are not conned by their manufactured "immigration crisis". The vast majority of which is official, VISA driven, work migration. We are a rich enough country to afford to build houses, hospitals, pay doctors, nurses, have decent public services and transport....instead of lining Tories and their donors' pockets with our tax money - off-shored to the Cayman Islands, of course.

    They're owned by rich people who prefer lower taxation. Newspapers as a medium are read by older people who tend to be more right-wing on social issues. If you're trying to influence politics, targeting older readers is a good strategy because they're also much more likley to vote. Also, in the UK about 75% of people get their news from the BBC which incentivises the newspapers to lean into opinion (which the BBC isn't allowed to do).

    I don’t read the tabloids, but I realise they are generally more populist and right-wing.

    • @tbatallen
      @tbatallen 10 місяців тому +14

      Culturally yes we have become more progressive but economically speaking the country is much more to the right today than it was then. The state had a larger role in society and owned key sectors and had significant assets on its books, taxation was significantly higher on those with high levels of income/wealth and workers were much for effectively able to organise (usually via unions) to improve their working conditions or pay inline with productivity gains.
      The media is often less about where it positions itself on issues and more about the issues in chooses to discuss ie focus on social/cultural change rather than economic change.

      @@tbatallen It’s complicated. Government spending is currently 45% of GDP - which is the highest it’s ever been in peacetime. Taxes are also relatively high by historic standards. This is a problem for any UK government, because next door there’s a country called Ireland, where government spending is only 25% of GDP and corporate taxes are the second lowest in Europe. It’s one reason companies like Apple prefer to invest in Ireland than the UK. Many social conservatives would support re-nationalisation of key utilities such as the railways. Many leftists think it’s not worth the effort to nationalise industries when regulation can achieve most of the same objectives.

    I don't read The Times newspaper, but at least as far as their online presence goes, I rarely see a report that could be characterised as clearly right wing. Talk TV and Radio also has some seriously left of centre voices, and even the Daily Mail is significantly less right wing than it was several years ago. While print media could perhaps still be characterised as being weighted towards the right of centre, the opposite must be said of non-print media outlets, of which only GB News is clearly and consistently right of centre.

For example people like you characterise "wanting slighlty low but still 10x higher than it was 30 years ago" immigration as "far right", meanwhile no voices are allowed in the media that simply want to end immigration. Similarly the most far left extremists, i.e. Ash "I'm literally a communist" Sarkar is invited to appear on mainstream broadcast media, while no one to the right of Nigel Farage (a pretty basic Thatcherite conservative) is ever allowed to appear on British television. The idea that there would ever be someone saying "I'm literally a fascist" during a British TV panel is obviously ridiculous, and clearly shows that the Overton Window is set far to the left, not right.
      The TORY government literally spend money on trying to stop "far right extremism", and publicly attacks "right wing extremists", while saying nothing about the far left, and in fact using government funding to finance left wing groups that attack its own policies. That used to be true, but times are changing. Nowadays the divide is between well educated and not so well educated. The well educated are left wing, and the not so well educated are right wing. It's not a completely clear divide, there are plenty of rich educated people who vote Tory out of selfishness and plenty of not so well educated poor people who vote Labour because it doesn't require much education to see that the Tories have trashed the country.
      However the Tory vote is increasingly an alliance between the extremely rich, who benefit from Tory policies, and the poor but badly informed who are worse off from Tory policies.

    • @Thought_Processing_
      @Thought_Processing_ 10 місяців тому +19

      I slightly disagree, media should always be objective rather than neutral. If one person says 2+2=4 and the another says 2+2=5, the neutral position is merely to state what each person said, the objective position is to say the first one is correct and the second is wrong.
      For the past few decades right wingers have basically said nothing but lies and falsehoods, by staying neutral and not calling out right wingers it has given them undue credibility allowing people to believe half truths which are lies.
      Now in fairness left wingers sometimes lie as well (usually it’s the actual communists rather than progressives/socialists) but the media will always point that out, something they do not do with the lies of the right wingers, hence why people say media has a right wing bias.

    As someone who hasn't grown up in the UK, the media here doesn't seem too biased. While papers like the Guardian and The Telegraph are more "obviously" leaning towards a certain side, I appreciate papers like The Times that seem to be quite factual and less opinionated about their content.

      From another post which I would agree with, this does not seem to be true:
      The FT - centrist; pro-Rejoin.
      The Guardian - leftist, pro-Labour; pro-Rejoin.
      The Independent - leftist, pro-Labour; pro-Rejoin.
      The Mirror - centre-left, pro-Labour.
      The Telegraph - rightist, but currently offering less than full support to the Conservatives. Its columnists are split on the EU, with a slight majority supporting our departure from the EU.
      The Times - centrist, but currently pro-Labour; pro-Rejoin.
      And Brexit is not destroying the British economy. That is a left wing trope. Mass migration is damaging all European countries socially and culturally. The EU was just about OK when it was the EEC and was just about mutual trade. Once it became the EU it started down the route of a superstate in the making, it has lost a lot of popular backing. Strange that the left is so behind the EU now, as it was opposed for a long time by the left as a right wing business organization. Hence the EU is always pushing for removing national borders under the Schengen agreement, and encouraging mass 3rd world migration to get cheap labour across Europe. Switzerland and Norway have done fine outside the EU. The European commission is not elected - and it decides what laws are proposed to the EU Parliament. See this recent quote: "European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will soon put forward a common strategy for the EU's defence industry, designed to strengthen military production and arms supply". She is not elected either.

    1) The Times is not "right-wing." _Maybe_ 30 years ago. Today they're certainly liberal. But just as from the North Pole all points are South, from the Left Pole all points are Right.
    2) "This report was brought to you by Ground News." Well, it advertises here, yes. But if I were them I wouldn't like the sound of that. They have a reputation to guard.
    3) Thank you, young lady, for using the word _bourgeois_ without arching one eyebrow or inflecting your voice with any trace of irony. Few things if any could be more revealing.

    The media most uk humans access is TV not papers.
    Why are papers right wing is a fair question. They didn't use to be. Mirror was highest circulation paper till middle 70s when uk public realised those policies were wrong / changed their position.
    TV people actually watch, apart from channel 4 which is openly left wing biased, is socially liberal bias but pretty good at being left right balanced.
    "I don't like the fact individuals choose to voluntarily buy a newspaper I don't agree with" isn't proof of systematic bias in media.

    I'm pretty sure 'the media' includes TV, radio and on-line media as well as newspapers? If you include these outlets there would certainly be a 'left' or more accurately a 'progressive' bias amongst all main legacy outlets. Also I would not classify 'The Sun' as 'right-wing' - evidence for this is lacking. Where was 'The Daily Mirror' - a mass media 'leftie' paper? Not sure about this channels 'leanings' but I think this poorly researched and presented video has an obvious bias in itself!
