    You added a rear differential, wheel indipendent suspencions and bigger wheels. You basically resolved all the problems of this set

    • @slfroden
      @slfroden  3 роки тому +1

      Alas, I didn't add a rear differential in these MODs, and there is only independent suspension on the front wheels, the rear wheels have trailing-arm suspension. I did add bigger wheels though!

    That final mod looks amazing! It inspired me to do something similar to my McLaren Senna, and while I was able to recreate the trailing arm suspension, I have no clue how to create the independent suspension in the front. Is there any chance you can take a few photos of the front suspension so I can better see how it works? Thanks!

    • @slfroden
      @slfroden  3 роки тому

      Thanks.
      Unfortunately I don't have the final model assembled at the moment so I cannot take any detailed photos for you.
      The key pieces in the front suspension are www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=31794 and www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=15460 and it is set up similar to the suspension in set 42021 (www.bricklink.com/catalogItemPic.asp?S=42021-1).
      I hope that helps.

      No worries. There were a few points in the video where I could partly see how it was constructed, so I should be able to make something similar to it. I will have to order a few parts, though. Thank you!

    • @CowsSayMoo
      @CowsSayMoo 3 роки тому

      Hello again! The pieces I ordered finally arrived and I finished building the suspension. I have run into quite a bit of problems though, and I was wondering if you had the same problems I do and if you have any solutions. The steering arms with the 3 tow balls seem to clash against the steering arms with the tow ball sockets when the suspension is fully extended. The steering arms with the 3 tow balls also seems loose to the point where the top of the wheels lean inwards towards the car, and when I turn the vehicle the outside wheel gets bent in weird directions and sometimes half of the suspension gets ripped off. I understand your mod was more of a prototype than a fully fleshed-out design, but if you could give me any advice that would be great. I don't want to change it back to my original suspension-less steering design :(

    • @slfroden
      @slfroden  3 роки тому

      While those steering arms with 3 tow balls are great for getting steering/suspension is a small space, they do have the issues you described where they can act a bit weird when you try to steer the wheels too far in either direction, or when the angle of the suspension arms is too great. LEGO pieces, and especially those ball joints and steering arms, just have too much slop in them to do anything super precise at this scale. You can try putting in a stopper somewhere to limit the steering angle and/or suspension travel (which is what LEGO do in a lot of their Technic vehicles), but this will be at the cost of reducing the overall turning radius and/or the overall suspension travel distance.
      Unfortunately LEGO only produce two different steering arms that are either 6 units long or 9 units long, which limits your options. In this video I have used the 6 units long steering arms, but my suspension arms are 7 units long, resulting in some weird geometry when approaching the steering limits or the extremes of the suspension travel. To get the best (simplest?) steering at this scale using LEGO pieces, you would typically want to have the steering arms the same length as the suspension arms so that everything pretty much stays in line.
      This set/model also has the steering arms in front of the suspension arms, which is a little bit weird, especially if you want to try and get Ackerman steering geometry. For Ackerman steering you would want to have the steering arms behind the suspension arms, which should be possible, but would require a few more modifications to the model, more than I wanted to do for this video.
      I have also created another 'trophy truck' style model/mod in the past (see here:ua-cam.com/video/3XS8KiyHvEo/v-deo.html) where I have used similar pieces for the front steering/suspension, except I have used the 9 units long steering arms and 9 units long suspension arms. That model worked fine, better than the modifications that I did in this video, so you might want to check that out too. Interestingly, that other model also only uses a single shock absorber at the front, similar to the suspension in LEGO set 8081 Extreme Cruiser (lego.brickinstructions.com/08000/8081/036.jpg).
      If you are willing to modify this set a bit more than simply replacing the axle like I did, I'm sure you can find a good solution. Let me know if you have any further questions, and I'd love to see your final result.

    • @CowsSayMoo

      I just tried to remake the suspension in the front by mounting the steering arms at a lower point and connecting the suspension from the top steering arm to the chasis, and it didn't work at all. I just don't have the pieces or the know-how to make it work. But when I took it back apart and rebuilt the original suspension design, for some reason the suspension is less stiff and more springy (when I first built it it was stiff and you would kind of feel it lock in place when you pushed it down) and the wheels don't lean inwards as much. The steering geometry is still pretty funky but for the most part it works way better now, even though I'm fairly sure nothing was changed. Even though my modifications to the suspension didn't work out, thank you for the advice, it was very interesting. If I attempt something like this again in the future, I'll keep what you said in mind. Thank you so much for all your help!

    How did you build the Modification for the largest Tires

    • @slfroden
      @slfroden  2 роки тому

      The first step was to extend the axles so that the wheels cleared the bodywork. Then I replaced the axles so that they had suspension springs.
      This isn't really an instructional video or a tutorial video, it is just trying to show how you can take an existing set and make some modifications to it, and maybe inspire you to do your own modifications to a set, or create you own models from scratch.
      Remember to have fun!
