I love it. The nautilus is for those who know a little. The calatrava is for those in the know! Great choice. One day I’ll pull the trigger and get one.
My 5196J has caused me more problems than any other watch I’ve owned. It’s so fragile, margin for error is near zero. This is the second time I’ve had to send it for service because of a broken mainspring. You must gently wind the watch and never knock it against anything.
...Dave, your two words say it best...simply stunning ! ...it really is...i do love the VC patrimony traditionelle... this, in my mind, is PP at their best
Great initial impression video! Wondering if you could share your thoughts on the piece, it actually looks like it’s out of the collection already, but still curious as to your thoughts after having spent some time with it.
I have to admit, beautiful, classic new watch. Great choice! Enjoy it ! When winding the watch you feel smoothness , you right. If you will have the opportunity, try to wind a Vacheron cal 4400. There the sense of smoothness is amazing... Regards.
This PATEK 5196 is a beautiful watch but i'd love to know how you felt in 20/21 when Rolex went through the roof? Did you regret not waiting? I have this Patek on my radar to buy after my Reverso Grande Reserve Q3018120. I hope you are well and still have these two great watches.
Absolutely beautiful watch... in the market for a precious metal dress watch right now and the Calatrava is on the list. It's a bit of a shame they don't include an exhibition case back to view the work of art powering the watch. BTW - I didn't notice, is there another keeper on the bracelet to manage some of that excess strap after you put it on?
Beautiful watch and thank you for the effort. Please next time can you hold the watch steady and in focus so we can appreicaite the details of the 5196 ? Thanks again.
I don't know why but I feel like for something so simple to just go for a quartz watch, maybe get one with a saphire crystal. I also don't wear dress watches so often, so I don't really see the point of spending so much on them, I like spending a bit more for chronographs and complications, watches with diamonds etc.
you really need to pay more attention to the focusing when recording a video... 80% of the time the watch was in the shot it was out of focus, which is a real shame as I came to this review to check the watch out, mainly.
I'm looking at a watch like this on Chrono, what is some advice to look at when making this kind of purchase and what do you think is a fair price for it pre-owned?
Should have kept the 5107! Better movement, better proportions. This thing also has 37mm but looks like 39 or 40. Movement is bread and butter, ridiculously small, thats why they dont display it.
I think the 5196g is a fantastic fantastic watch, and its what today PP offers as their more classic minimalistic watch. I adore the lines on the case, the brushed and polished areas, the hands, the small seconds hand. The color of the dial. It is just super cool. Also the platinum version is a dream. I could only have those two watches and dont care about opinions😼
In hindsight yes, the 5196 was a larger wearing watch and the movement to case ratio was quite off which is why I believe that PP decided to not have an exhibition caseback. The 5107 was a great piece and I do miss it!
Hi, I sold the 5107 and eventually the 5196 as well simply because I did not find myself having many formal occasions to wear the classic dress watch to and thus it didn't suit my lifestyle. The 5107 is a gorgeous and stunning piece and if you are considering, I would say go for it! Hearing that rotor spin while being simple dress watch on your wrist is enough reason to buy one....now, the harder question is what colour gold?!?
Are you still enjoying it? I bought a Lange 1815 UpDown recently, and it’s really made me get more into dress watches. I’m considering selling a vintage sub to finance a 5196G, but am worried the novelty will wear off with such a simple time only watch. Have you worn it much since getting it? It looks fairly versatile but am worried it’s too much of an outright dress watch to wear casually.
pejpm Hi, I’ve sold the 5196!! It was a great watch but, I didn’t wear it much as I don’t go to many formal events. If you’re into dress watches, I think the Calatrava is a must have!
Dave’s Watch yeah that’s my fear. I don’t go to many formal events so I’d be wearing it as a semi-casual watch, so not sure how much I’d wear it. I almost feel like I need to buy it just to scratch the itch, even if I end up selling it, as I can’t stop thinking about it at the moment!
Dave’s Watch my 1815 is rose gold, so I’d be going for white gold. The other factor is that I’ve been collecting for quite a long time but have never owned a Patek. It sounds silly, but there are just certain watches that as a collector you should own at some point, and for me, the Calatrava is one of those. I really love the platinum with breguet numerals, but that’s outside my price range.
@@pejpm In that case, you should really go for it. You won't have any regrets and if it's not to your liking you can easily sell out of it. One of the reasons why I buy and sell so much is because I want to gain the experience and knowledge of owning some of these amazing watches and I can say that the 5196G is easily on the top of my list of "Good feeling" watches. Not to mention, the winding mechanism is the best I've felt and perhaps you can compare it to your Lange and let me know! I've never owned a Lange and the Saxonia is on my radar!
Hi Dave, hope you don't mind me asking as I am researching to buy one, was it a brand new watch? Price tag on brand new as shown on PP website is 22,600 and change.
Some follow up questions Dave - where would you suggest a new Patek 5196 be purchased? Jomashop.com i.e. grey market a good place? And if purchased from authorized dealer, is it always full suggested retail price?
@@firewa22s If you're going to buy brand new, do it at the Patek Authorized dealer! They should have the 5196 in stock and if not, I'm sure they will be able to order one in for you. Walk into your AD and then you can share your experience with me! :)
@@daveswatch5825 will do :) would you be able to advise if AD has any negotiable margin on brand new item? Or is it pretty much a done deal based on retail price on Patek website?
Cris Yorke No. they’re just different. Rolex has mastered mass-production of a luxury product without sacrificing quality. Patek has focused on remaining a more discreet and artistic brand in many ways.
Dave’s Watch I think Rolex is a bit more durable than the Calatrava for playing with children and stuff like that! I think you are wise to walk in the opposite direction with these dress watches and the handwork that goes into the detail of them is phenomenal. Batman and Batgirl GMTs are not worth the money people are trying to get for them on the grey market! They are overproduced with little hand craft work and will not age as well as these dress watches.

215 movement easiky crash
Funny, I’ve had my share of Rolex steel sports also and they can keep their 100% markup. This 5196 is just next level, well done.

I love the Patek Leather bracelet.

I'd MUCH rather have a 5196 over any steel Rolex. I think you made a good choice, And nice Reverso too 👍
a perfect two watch collection would be Explorer1 + 5196
