My new Trane furnace requires a proper bonded ground both to run off the grid power and to run using my Renogy 2000 watt inverter. Originally Renogy told me my new furnace was not compatible and when I hooked up my inverter the furnace refused to start. They said this was the word from their "best" engineers. As soon as I put a ground lead from the inverter ground bus to the chasis it worked just fine. I also called up Renogy to tell them their engineers were wrong.
If that's their best engineering, return the Renogy while you still can.
@@ewicky The build quality is great. I have never had any of their products fail. It's the so called engineers on their customer support staff that have no clue. I am guessing it's just a bunch of tech level people reading scripts in customer service the same as most large companies now. If it's not written down they just say it won't work even if it does with some easy modification.

This works fine, but the ground wire does have to be connected to the breaker box due to the finiky electronics, the ground on a generator or battery doesnt work, it needs to be the correct grounding, so I connected an outlet and made sure the ground wire is always connected to the breaker box from the furnace and it works like a charm and I had to use it a couple of months ago during a coupe or three hour outage
On my older furnace that was not true, but on my newer furnace it needs a proper bonded ground to run using the mains power and to run with my Renogy 2000 watt inverter.

In some places in the US they allow the doorbell transformer to be shared with the furnace. The fused switch gives some protection for that. The furnace has a fuse on the PC board usually located on the squirrel cage/blower motor that will protect the furnace and motor. Hey it's your house do what ever but hook things back when you sell the house.

Myself after coming for the furnace tuneup, I was sucked into the power back up vortex. After all the options I bought and set myself a Generac 10k ng unit with sheding 16 breaker automatic switch. Also smooth start for 3 ton A/C unit. Have not needed it yet.

I guess the most flexible way to handle a condensate pump would be to plug it into the power station as well or, use a cube tap or power strip..

Hi Dave: Thanks for these keep your furnace going videos. I watched your original ones, and installed the “plug,switch, pigtail” setup in the 12-9-22 video as you directed, then I upgraded following your methods in the “EX Generator Switch” video of 2-24-23. I saw you used the Ecobee thermostat at your house, so I purchased and installed that too. When I tested for each setup, I only did several minutes to confirm functions. But, I just had my first outage, and was happy to use the EZ Transfer Switch setup. The furnace ran perfect off my Delta 2, but after a few minutes, the flame kicked off as required by the thermostat setting. However…the fan never shuts off! It runs on and on. So I try again. I unplug everything, let temp drop below the 70 degree setting, set furnace to 70 to call heat, the furnace kicks on again, fan comes on as usual, house warms to 70, then flame goes off and again, the fan never shuts off! I installed to your specifications, so Im confused. Since you run ecobee as well, might you kno which wire I need to investigate? Or what I should check? The setup is perfect otherwise. Thanks.
I don't use a 'smart' thermostat' but could it be the Ecobee is re-setting the blower to run always, due to momentary power outage before switching?
but when i switch off EZ Switch and go back to grid, the Ecobee is back to normal without me doing any resets, etc. .@@gnic76
Is the T-stat Fan function in the ON setting? Should be in auto.
well its normally set to auto. Youre not suggesting thast it gets thrown over to "on" are you? Would it do that. Back on grid power its always back to "auto", i never have to play with it.@@ptso7580
Do you have an example of this where the switch/receptacle is not on the side of the furnace. I think I know how to do it, but wasn't sure if there was any difference. My switch is on the ceiling beside my furnace.
Hey this is an awesome DYI. I just checked my furnace, the wires coming out of my furnace actually connects to a switch that gives power from the breaker. I don't see a fuse like the one you are showing at the 2:48 mark in your video.
Would I be able to connect the pigtail to those wires without the fuse then change the switch to an outlet?
Or should I just install a new outlet where the switch is, then install a switch controlling that outlet once the pigtail it plugged directly into it from the furnace?

Why is there a fuse and a breaker on this furnace?
The (fuse and switch) may be required to meet local building code on a new furnace installation or a newly built home in order to pass inspection but that doesn't mean the homeowner cannot change it later to do what he did to enable a home battery backup to power the furnace if the grid goes down during the winter.
I have a switch/fuse location issue as far as it being mounted about 4 feet up from the bottom where furnace entry wire from the switch/fuse enters and I could have access. The switch/fuse switch, only mounted, is 4 feet up and not directly accessible without disassembly of furnace cover.. the grid wire feeds directly into TOP of switch/fuse and furnace wire feeds from the bottom and enters the furnace 4 feet below the switch/fuse. The switch/fuse only mounted at 4 feet above furnace wire entry below. My furnace is a Rheem installed in 1993.

Whats the purpose of the fused switch? Mine looks to have this but its about 3 feet from the furnace? Can't i just install a plugged box on my furnace and leave the fused switch in line 3 feet away?
Hi, I have my ac unit almost 1 1/2 year now. New house here in California. My ac issue is suddenly heating is not working. I heard from the attic when I’m watching this video, humming sound like about to start but stop right away. It happened 3 times in different time & day the thermostat set on 73F it went up to 75F. The air filter replaced a month ago. Hope you can help me with this issue, my problem. Warranty is over. Thanks & God bless.
It would have been preferable to connect the ground from the box to the receptacle to ensure better contact than just relying on the yoke of the receptacle.

Wouldn't it be better to wire the receptacle through the fuse (add a second box) so it has the same protection if it's a different rating than the breaker? I don't know why you would have a fuse and a breaker but I'm sure some districts have a reason.
I don't think you need a fuse. You've got a breaker already in the circuit via the inverter.
I tried to do this. It works totally fine on AC power, but when I connect the chord to my portable power station (EcoFlow River Pro 2), the furnace shuts down throwing a ground fault error. Any suggestions on how to fix this please? Thanks!
I’d suggest bonding your ground and neutral. See if that does the trick

A good idea to temporarily bypass the power supply but how do we recharge the battery power centre?
Portable solar panels would do it.
For extended outages, some use a generator during the day and a power station at night.

How much voltage-amps-watts does an "average" furnace use? Thank You !!
My old 70s furnace drew about 400 watts running and my new energy efficient furnace draws about 180 watts running on a cold day around 20F. They both only ran 50% of the time so 200 watt/hrs and 90 watt/hrs. Best to buy a monitor and plug it in and monitor the furnace on a typical cold day to see how many watts it draws. I set up my home battery bank to handle my whole house load for 8 hours so I did not have to start my generator right away.

No - the single ground prong should be on the bottom. the ground prong is longer than the two power prongs so it goes in first and comes out last and decreases the risk of a shocking hazard for the person. The reason for the prong to be on the bottom is so if the cord is accidently or violently yanked from the outlet or if the outlet is somehow damaged/broken and the wires come free inside the wall you want the ground to be away from and below from the power wires to lessen a fire hazard.

I think you should work with a licensed electrician, I don’t think you understand what the fuse is for
and it is a code requirement in many jurisdictions. The fuse is for mainly motor protection it is much
more sensitive than a breaker of the same rating. The motor can over heat and catch on fire before the
breaker trips.
I am very interested in knowing why there is a fuse after the breaker. My dad and I live in the same town, his furnace has a fuse as shown here and mine doesn't. What gives? I see your point of using a fuse working as a normal and a breaker as slow-blow fuse.
@@JT-lq4yd Hi, hopefully your furnace was installed by a competent installer and a inspection was
done by the authority having jurisdiction. your furnace maybe newer and have it’s over current protection
built into the furnace. I just don’t think you start removing things without completely understanding there
intended purpose. There is a reason why electrician’s are licensed. Breakers are not considered as proper
over current protection for motors, ask an electrician.
@@JT-lq4ydthis type of switch an SSU switch and the fuse is called an edison fuse. Some furnaces may list an MOCP (maximum overcurrent protection). Say 6.25amps. Most furnaces are on a 15amp circuit. In this scenario a SSU switch with 6.25amp edison fuse would be needed to protect the device.
In the video the edison fuse was 15amp as well as being on a 15amp circuit. Thus, the 15amp edison fuse is not providing any more additional protection than the 15amp circuit/breaker already provides.
These videos are showing what can be done to prepare yourself for an emergency or during an emergency situation.
Keep the original parts and change it back if ever needed. (I.e. selling a home and local inspector requires SSU switch with a specific amp rated edison fuse at furnace).
That's only one thing that's wrong here. The unprotected cord out in the open where it is susceptible to damage is another issue. He continues to make these kind of mods, which while they work, would not pass an inspection. Notice how he never says it's "to code". If you want to do this kind of thing, spend a few extra bucks and do it right with a power inlet transfer switch. A brand name one costs about $55, and would pass an inspection without problems.
