If a violent video game inspires you to go out and commit violent acts, there was something wrong with you before you ever started playing the game!
Fucking preach.
I worked in the video game industry and have played games since pong was new, most of them violent. I became a buddhist monk in my later adult years. Still love video games. Never killed anyone.
Preach! By Thompson's logic, I should be a deadly kung fu master cuz I've played so many fighters.
Why does this not apply to movies lot of movies with such violet acts
@@adith9327 Because video games are new and scary, and depart from the good old fashioned, Christian values of cinema. /j
One of my favorite things to point out about the whole myth of video games desensitizing people to violence is the US Army actually did a bunch of studies because they hoped it did so they could use it on soldiers and came to the conclusion that it didn't.
It is still funny that they recruit through one... I still remember when it came out and ppl started posting the emails.
They should stick to movies. Top gun part 37 enlisting danger!!! ⚡
@@bayoubilly5176 and they're not even subtle about it, America's Army is obviously a recruiting tool
It's also ironic that he sent his letter to the police, of all people. Wouldn't it make recruiting would-be police officers easier if his beliefs were true, as well?
In fact, a version of Doom was created specifically for the military by Doom creators id Software. It was called...

Wait a minute -- Jack had his 10 year old buy an M-rated game from Best Buy, recorded it, and tried to use it as evidence? Even though any store is likely to sell an M-rated game to a kid when the parent is standing right there and not objecting to it?
Yep something tells me bottom of the class during exams.

I've played Doom, and have never shot up any schools. I've also played Dungeons and Dragons, and have somehow failed to summon demons in my basement. It's almost like that's not how it works.
Demon summoning requires latin

I swear Mr Simon is one of the EXTREMELY few influencers that tries to make sure to be “allegedly” correct as possible.
It is refreshing because most influencers just spout whatever nonsense that their brains can vomit out. I wish you all the very best health and happiness!
Nah, he does so much stuff, he ends up being wrong a lot. His attitude about it is what makes the difference to me. He is transparent about his scripts, credits the work others put in writing his scripts and editing his videos etc. He usually owns mistakes or errors, and doesn't take things so seriously.
I don't consider him an influencer, because I view the title of influencer to be an insult for narcissistic, spoiled and lazy rich people who make more money by scamming their "fans".
@@maurer3d exactly. Simon Whistler isn't an influencer, he is the Influence.
He's not an influencer
I was waiting for, even hoping, that Simon would say "do you know how many schools I've shot up? Zero. Allegedly....."
I'm Canadian, and I used to work in a small dvd/videogame store, and I was compelled to tell parents and grandparents what the 50 Cent game really was when they asked me for it for their child. Because parents 100% complained when employees sold it to them without warning them in the past.
Yeeeeaaaahhhh… my dad was 100% of one of those complainers when he bought grand theft auto for the game boy color for my sister.
It had the game rating on it, which tipped off our mom who confiscated the game from my (then) 12yo sister.
He was so mad because he couldn’t get all his money back and blamed the poor guy at GameStop for selling him the game without warning him that it was filled with sex workers and auto theft…
Not knowing about the sex workers is kind of understandable, but with a game name like “grand theft auto”… ah… you kinda **have** to have felony auto theft in the gameplay 🤨
@@CraftyVegan If there's one thing I've learned from retail, it's that people cave to their children without doing their research. If there's a second thing, it's that people don't bloody well read what's in front of them. They just buy things without question. It sucks that it puts the onus on us to be the responsible ones, but what can you do. I feel for that GameStop employee, they have such stupid sales targets to hit, I can't imagine the pressure.
@@CraftyVegan the joy of every job I've ever had and still have is. A) I can tell customers exactly how stupid they are. B) never cared enough about any job not to defend myself or a coworker. The exact same way it was ruined by rap music, VCRs, TV, radio, comic books, rock n roll, and jazz. Just casually ignore the 100s of studies claiming they're not linked. My mouse and keyboard still haven't taught me how to hold, aim accurately, shoot, and reload an M16 or M4 or an AK model. Yet.

Ooh…I remember this guy getting his underpants twisted in a bunch over NOT JUST video games like Grand Theft Auto and Mortal Kombat, BUT video games as a whole…it’s crazy to think that it was only approximately 15-20+ years ago during my childhood and adolescence!
Yeah, I remember him getting his panties twisted over The Sims because some players enjoyed murdering their Sims. Like dude, some people end Monopoly playthrough by flipping table and/or getting in a brawl but I don't see him trying to get tabletop games outlawed over Monopoly.
@@wardrobewings8000 I read an article somewhere years ago that thanks to video games like Mortal Kombat they created the ERSB to try to make sure that kids and especially their parents didn’t make the mistake of getting their hands on age inappropriate video games. BUT, we all know how well that’s worked out for approximately the last 25-30+ years of the ERSB’s existence 🙄🤦♂️.
@@dylanbowlin3646 Well, the ESRB was really made to protect video game companies, I mean age ratings are basically a warning label, you can't blame the company for selling age-inappropriate games to kids when it's on the parents for not paying even the smallest amount of attention to what they're getting their kids
@@partariothegoth Right? And every time that we heard some soccer moms were throwing temper tantrums/ hissy fits over just that VERY same thing that you mentioned (especially if it was games that we wanted but knew our parents wouldn’t approve of it AT ALL, and brought said games without even bothering to checking the ratings system, caught us in the act of playing it AND asked us where we got said games (i.e. them)) 🤦♂️🙄 you know?
In the USA, an attorney who is admitted to the bar (passed the exam) may only practice in jurisdictions they're admitted in (different states, federal courts etc) unless they have a small motion approved (basically a rubber stamp) where they designate an attorney who IS admitted in that jurisdiction as an advisor/sponsor etc. I believe it's called "pro hoc vice" or something, I probably have that spelling wrong as I am not an attorney myself.

I remember selling games to kids in a shop many years ago. They had the PEGI rating, but at the time it wasn't legally enforceable, so it could be an 18 but technically there was nothing stopping a younger person buying it. It was only games with a BBFC rating that were legally age restricted, and most games didn't have one.

My parents thought video games were demonic... until a youth pastor gave us a playstation and the most plain, generic, sport games when I was 18 lol.
Wow, that's a hell of a gift lol, but yeah, it's like the whole thing with doom and people being like, it's satanic...
I mean, I guess kinda, but only in the sense that you're literally destroying demons in every possible manor, be it with a gun, a chainsaw, etc, the goal is essentially to kill demons, demonstrating the utter lack of understanding the people complaining about the games have with regard to the games. And even the violent/actually satanic promoting type games (not really sure if I can name any in the satanic promoting category, but nevertheless), it's a video game. We know the difference between reality and a video game. Like Simon often says, number of people killed in GTA V: an absolute shit ton; number of people killed or even wanted to kill in real life: fucking zero. Not a suicide goddamn person.
@@ryanc473 my parents edited Disney movies to take out the "satanic" parts.... so they were a lot more strict about things lol. I told them I was getting the anti- demon possession tattoo from Supernatural and my mother told me that I would be kicked out of the family if I did, because "god says to rid yourself and your life of any evil, because if you welcome it into your life, you open the door to satan and his demons." Mike and Jerry probably _are_ millionaires by now. Aside from their online activity, for many years now they've been operating the largest fan-centered gaming conventions in the country, Penny Arcade Expo (PAX). I think they run 3 of them a year (or did, pre-COVID) in different regions, and they're massive.
Oh, they definitely are by now, but I don't know that they were at the time. I think PAX was only in its first or second year, and it was still only PAX Prime. Going off memory though so I could be wrong, but yeah, they are loaded at this point
@@ThatWriterKevin It wasn't quite that early in their history if memory serves, but either way they were mostly just doing a webcomic at the time and no one gets to be a millionaire just from that.
@@ThatWriterKevin OK, this is one of the stranger coincidences I've ever had coincide. Within a day of this video being posted, I got a random email from the Penny Arcade forums. I worked at a local variety store back in the late 90s, the dawn of the energy drink. There's no legal restriction on their sale here, but the owner decided if you looked less than 15 we wouldn't sell it to you. We got the same "but it's the law" complaints when we refused service.
"Do you have an IQ of 70 or something?" ABSOLUTELY BRUTAL SIMON WELL DONE.
Weird. In Australia if something is marked at the wrong price, either on the shelf pricing or in the catalogue, we had to sell it at the listed price. I mean I know every country is different but I hadn't realised England was THAT different. Its different if the customer has just swapped the price themselves or something deceptive like that, but when its a store/advertising error, that's the price. This is from the Australian Consumer Protection page:
"Sometimes businesses display different prices for the same item. If this happens, even by mistake, the business must either:
Sell the product for the lowest displayed or advertised price, or stop selling the item until the incorrect price is corrected."
Generally what we would do is sell it to the customer at the listed price, then immediately go and fix the shelf pricing. If it was a catalogue error, you basically just had to put up with it till the catalogue expired (usually a week).
The US has a similar retail practice (though there have been a few large chains intentionally over charging consumers recently)
"Residents Evil" would be a cool game.
Your apartment is overrun with zombies and you have to get to the ground floor safely.
If you've read WWZ you know what I'm thinking.
I'm 100% with Simon regarding the comic books and age limits. Even if someone at the counter wanted to card me when trying to purchase an M-rated game or an R-rated movie, I'm pretty sure we as a society have agreed that even if I, a guy in his thirties, was hypothetically buying this mature media for a child under the legal age, I'm under no obligation to admit that to the employee.
Obviously you don't have to admit it. We wouldn't never refuse sale to an adult, but if they were buying it for a kid we wanted them to make sure they were aware what they were getting. Walking Dead comics were VERY R rated, but a lot of adults think of comic books as being for kids so they wouldn't think twice about buying it for twelve year old
The hypocrisy of fundamentalist. Christianity is people want freedom for themselves but not for their enemies.
im not even sure if they want freedom for themselves. 😳
as an American when people say "I have freedom of speech I have a right to say this stuff" My immediate reaction is yes you do but
1 I don't have to listen to you,
2 it works both way if i say I don't agree with you I have right to say that too
Wow, I Totally remember playing the game “Bully”! 😂
Nintendo eased up on content ages ago. Resident Evil 4 was, originally, released exclusively for GameCube. In fact, Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami enjoyed working with GameCube so much he's quoted as stating that if he ever had to develop a Resident Evil game for any other platform, he would cut off his own head. Even now there are many violent franchises on Switch including Resident Evil, Bayonetta, Skyrim, Assassin's Creed, Saint's Row and quite a few others.
I knew he was crazy, but I did not think he was THAT crazy.
The show, Penn and Teller's Bullshit, did an episode on violent video games, and they included Jack Crawford's stupidity. They also interviewed federal investigators. They said that they saw violent video games in every home of every teenager who went on a mass shooting rampage. They also saw toothpaste, and viewed the two items with the same likelihood of causing the kid to go on a mass shooting. Because video games were almost as common as toothpaste in the homes of teenagers, and even if they didn't own any, their friends did, so they had access to them.
Funny thing, a person came in to buy liquor. I saw as they had their child (probably 17-19 years old and this was in the US) point out which bottle to buy. The parent just then requested for me to retrieve and sell it to them. I asked both for ID. When they refused to give me the kid's ID, I refused to sell. When they asked why, the mom was buying, I responded that I am required to not sell if I think the child would consume it. In some states, if it was bought by a parent and consumed at home, it is allowed, but that never came up in my training, and I don't think it is officially legal in my state, though of course almost everyone does it. Anyway, long story short, don't make it obvious it is being bought for the kids, and I wouldn't think twice about selling it.
Somebody give this guy the self righteous award. You have single handily saved the world and you’re morality is inspirational to us all. Oh grand righter of wrongs may your every day on earth be a path of moral imposing on all those that are lesser than you.
@@Saviaar way to not get the point.

Another amusing thing about Jack, he was up in arms about The Sims. Apparently because you could download a mod made by fans of the game to remove the sensor blur on naked sims. This is even more stupid when you know that when you remove the sensor you can see that sims are as anatomically correct as Barbie and Ken. 🙄 Another fun factoid. The Penny Arcade guys were awarded the keys to the city of Seattle for their philanthropy!
Even in America freedom of speech doesn't mean you can say whatever you like without any repercussions. The people who think that just don't understand the constitution. Freedom of speech means that the government can't censor criticism of the government. If you could literally say anything with no repercussions laws about libel, slander, and defamation would not exist. Even outside those legal situations, society has always found a way to shun people who say stupid, untrue or hateful things.
As mentioned to a similar comment, they HAVE to pretend that freedom of speech is absolute, because if they don't then they must admit the right to bare arms (or freedom of religion) are also not absolute.
The US has two types of Attorneys General. The US Attorney General which is basically America’s Lawyer, they’re the top federal prosecutor. Then each state has it’s own Attorney General, which is the chief prosecutor for that particular state.
I JUST finished rewatching your video of the columbine massacre on casual criminalist, where you brought him up and called him a Bell there too, that was the school shooting you were referring to
Thank you Simon for actually understanding America. Tbh too many people DON'T understand that we're both one country but also a union of individual states which each have a degree of autonomy and so our laws and culture differ significantly from region to region and state to state. Comparing it to lots of countries is an apt metaphor.
If you ever played the US Army game 'America's army' you quickly learn how easy it is to get wounded/killed once you factor in rl doesn't have respawns there's no way that game made you want to join the army unless you already had a passion for wanting to join the armed services. If anything it probably scared more people away from joining than the other way around.

As long as it didnt make them act out( some adhd etc kids can become addicted and get violent when told to get off game or its taken away etc) that we shoukd consider letting them see if gaming helped them. It made a big difference for my son. To me saying across the board all video games are bad and lead to school shooters is assinine and dangerous. Finding video games on the shelf doesn't mean a thing. They probably had books as well, some movies, Legos, some board games. Is he going to start accusing those as well? In all seriousness I can absolutely see him at a book burning, he seems the sort.
I was diagnosed with PTSD at 13, had anger issues and was constantly anxious and depressed. My therapist told my mom to let me play videogames when I was angry and anxious. Shooting zombies was actually beneficial to me. It gave me an outlet for the anger and relieved stress, while also giving me something to focus on where I felt like I was accomplishing something. It also helps improve hand eye coordination, creative problem solving, and a bunch of other skills. My mom also made sure that I was getting homework and chores done and there were time limits. I and my mother disliked this guy back then because he was doing all of this at the same time that videogames were being used in my therapy sessions. My therapist would talk to me while I was playing resident evil, because I would relax and actually talk to him. There are huge benefits to videogames in moderation. As long as it's not stopping you from doing what you need to get done it's fine
Love this as usual, but I feel compelled to point out, in my best Simon voice, that IQ is not an accurate measure of intelligence or capability. If I remember from a today I found out episode, it was for children's readyness to move school grades.
It was also heavily used by supporters of eugenics
For some reason I Keeps getting Marijuana commercials before Brain Blaze episodes...it's as if they know I want to BLAZE!
My parents were totally fine with me consuming media with like gorey violence and nudity and sex when I was younger but they wouldn't let me watch stuff with like gross or mean humor. Married with Children was banned as was mid 90s wrestling for some reason. I always wondered how that line got drawn
Your promo pic appears to be Jack Thompson, beloved Australian actor... Pretty sure. Could be wrong but... Haven't found a photo of your JT with a beard...
King Danny will be unpleased, Kevin the usurper having two scripts used in a week???
Just what is occurring down in the Blazement?
Too many of the fun mushrooms. Allegedly. Cheers
The editor Danny?
Danny's meme game was on point Tuesday
@@ThatWriterKevin chef’s kiss good!
I was an avid PA reader when all of this went down. I've met them and worked next to their booth at PAX back in the day. Very excellent dudes, and Child's Play is an excellent charity. 🤘
This one will be good, bois. WE BLAZE!
Sh1t son. I go through 3/lighters a day.
"Especially h*tler" perfect editing chops, gratz Sam!!
Apparently even a lawyer can be a Florida Man
Love that Simon has Kevin writing for so many channels! I may end up watching ALL of Simon's channels if he keeps that trend up!
Whenever someone tries to push the “violence and sex” excuse on why video games are evil I’m like “did you ever watch open television in the past, I don’t know, past two decades?”, but at this point it’s hard to know if people even watch it or just passed out in front of it with the controller nearby and accidentally changed from console/cast input to tv after passing out (or are even old enough to remember what tv is at this point)
Hell, I'd say TV within the last 3 or 4 decades! LOL
@@lynnkay417 yeah even back in the 80s there was a lot of hey hey youuuu know what we really mean in sitcoms and stand up. Also Carlin, Murphy , Sam kinison.
OMG the clip from the fullmetal outtakes got me so good... your face ESPOLDE!
Release Kanye back into the sea and don't let him out until he embraces his identity as a gay fish.
I agree with this LOL
Slight correction - Take Two are the Publishers of the listed titles, not the Devs. The Devs are Rockstar Games
Wow, I haven’t heard of this guy since 2009. Didn’t know he got disbarred.
"Thats a bold stratagy Cotton, lets see if it pays off for em!"
LEGENDARY!!!
The whole doom, power ranger thing sounds like my parents too, it was because they hated power rangers and those show, and they didn't want to hear them or about them but fps yea thats cool
Answering Fact Boi's questions:
10:50 There is one US attorney general (currently Merrick Garland) and many state attorneys general, one for each state
17:55 England & Wales are often lumped together because of how much deviating they can do from overall UK law. The Scottish and Northern Irish assemblies have relatively free hands, being able to legislate on anything except a list of reserved matters. The Welsh assembly, by contrast, can only legislate on specifically authorised matters, while England has no devolved assembly at all, meaning measures that are to only affect England have to be passed by the whole UK Parliament (there have in the past been such bills that gained majority support MPs in English seats, but lost due to non English MPs voting down measures that don't apply to them).
18:28 I think you're reaching for "everything's bigger in Texas"? It's often called the lone star state
38:18 Correct, Andrew Jackson is on the $20
My brain speaks in Danny’s voice…
Great I'm going to have the bell end song stuck in my head for another week now 🤣🤣
Glad to know Simon is in favor of the oubliette system.
15:14 🤣 Epic Simon - How can I make this my Ringtone????
Wow. I had no idea Penny Arcade ran into that situation. I'm a huge fan
They talked about it a ton when it was going on. They made a strip about Jack calling Gabe and had a ton of news posts. I believe they mentioned it on their old podcast too. Their fans filed so many complaints with the Florida Bar Association that they basically said "please stop, they are aware of the situation already"
Simon- we have National Certifications and State Licensing with it. I'm a nurse and nurses have to take the NCLEX but when you pass the exam, you get the state license in the state in which you took the exam as well. If I were to move to a different state, I would have to apply to transfer my nursing license to that new state otherwise I wouldn't be allowed to practice there.
