  • The one and only Ryker from "Ryker Camp" and Goose Dog join us for a hike on steep terrain, over fallen logs, up slippery rocks and across sketchy bridges. Along the way Ryker finds Bear Bread, Huckle Berries, Banana Slugs, Gnome homes, Claw marks and other signs of magic in the Tongass National Forest.

My husband and I did this hike a month or so ago, from the other end. At 66 years old it was more of a challenge than when we first did it 35 years ago (the summer we first met!) It's definitely in worse shape now, but such FUN! Glad to see you take the young guy up :)

He is great! I love how he points out the fungus and the slugs and the claw marks. He seems like a great hiking partner!

Taking kids on a sufferfest has to feel oddly satisfying, in a sick, sadistic kind of way. 😂

Were those converse all stars you were wearing? Maybe he should be holding on to your hood on the slippery stuff!

Where does the "upper" cross trail start?

the simplest way is to take the "Gavan Hill Trail" up from the "Cross Trail" toward "Harbor Mountain". just past 600 vertical feet, after walking up a long set of wooden stairs you leave the Gavan Hill Trail and follow a not so obvious trail to the left. this is the "Upper Cross Trail". it traverses the mountain gaining about 200ft, crosses a number of unmaintained, sketchy bridges and eventually connects back to the "Cross Trail"
