On August 20, 1942, twelve Marine dive-bombers and nineteen Marine fighters landed at Guadalcanal with a crucial mission: to defeat the Japanese navy and prevent them from sending additional troops and supplies to Guadalcanal, soon to be nicknamed "Starvation Island" by the Japanese. The Japanese were transforming this remote, jungle-covered mountain in the southern Solomon Islands into an air base to disrupt the supply lines between the U.S. and Australia. The night after the Marines captured the partly finished airfield, the Imperial Navy launched a surprise night attack on the Allied fleet offshore, resulting in the worst defeat the U.S. Navy suffered in the 20th century, which led to the abandonment of the Marines on Guadalcanal.
The Marines fortified their positions and awaited reinforcements, while the thirty-one pilots and twelve gunners engaged the Japanese, shooting down eighty-three planes in less than two months. The dive bombers conducted over thirty attacks on the Japanese fleet. "Fifty-Three Days on Starvation Island" follows Major John L. Smith, a charismatic leader who became America’s top fighter ace at the time; Captain Marion Carl, the Marine Corps’ first ace and a rare survivor of his squadron at the Battle of Midway, who was shot down and had to navigate twenty-five miles of Japanese-held jungle to return to base; and Major Richard Mangrum, a lawyer-turned-dive-bomber commander whose inexperienced men inflicted significant damage on the Japanese Navy.

John Bruning is a great author. I just finished 53 days and can say it is an excellent book. Worth the time and money.
Excellent compendium of little known exploits undertaken by these unsung heroes of the pacific campaign. I have read and studied fairly extensively within the historical constructs of the WWII pacific campaigns however; I knew nothing of these great heroes! I look forward to reading Mr Bruning’s book.
All I can do is enjoy this intimate knowledge of history. I can only imagine how much research and interviews it must have required to acquire it all.

Wildcats kept flying until the end of the war. The FM2s had a different motor too. I bet the oil line did get plumped differently.
The Japanese did purchase the BR 20 from Italy and employed them in China while the Mitsubishi KI21 was being developed
The hellct was not the result of of the captured zero from akutan in the Aleutians,rather it was already under development prior to the capture of kogs zero
Yes finding the Zero did contribute to some important doctrine changes that paid off though.
