      Yes it really hits you with this performance, I suspect that's partly related to the location, this mammoth cathedral packs a real resonance punch. I've been a bit equivocal about Monteverdi's 'Selva morale e spirituale' but these ones performed like this are fabulous!

    I was surprised and delighted to see that the hall remained silent after the last note sounded.
    This is as it should always be.
    There is a good reason, though you might not think so.
    It has to do with the vibrations in the air that remain after the music stops.
    The music is still radiating outward, outward and it needs a space of silence to move into.
    The cacophonous beating of hands, the rowdy applause, beats it back and obliterates the afterglow that is absolutely necessary for the FULLEST enjoyment of the music.
    The music needs to be surrounded by silence.
    That way, it can be heard better.
    It's like clearing the palate between courses at dinner.
    At the end of a piece, the audience should hold back their enthusiasm for a few seconds.
    Let the music subside like the distant wake of a ship.

      When the audience dives in with applause as soon as the music ends, it always makes me feel as if they were impatient for it to finish, and are applauding BECAUSE it's finished.

      Yes quite! A lot more 'early music' is now performed, but even that is rather narrow in some respects, at least in the UK where I live. There is a lot of chamber Renaissance music and 'standard fare' Baroque i.e. Bach and Handel, BUT very little earlier or wider Baroque, very little French or Italian other than a couple of over done pieces, shame! Still overall getting much better.

    I have so far failed to like Monteverdi. He seems to me like a musical vandal. But the Biber was perfect, for sureness of direction, for consistently well chosen tempi, for the expertise and beauty of sound created by every single performer, for the glorious music and of course for the cathedral. I have heard this mass several times, one performance that nearly worked was live, but now I have heard it in perfect clarity. I have received a very valuable present. The whole mass was so well done, but certain moments stand out, the crucifixus for four basses, following on from the Et incarnatus for high voices, the extraordinary harmonies in the Agnus at Miserere nobis, the grandeur of the trumpets, and the enrichment of the harmony as soon as they fall silent with their rigid tonic and dominant. Lovely Miriam Feuersinger sang her heart out. I think everybody gave their very best.

    • @arthurfilemon6038
      @arthurfilemon6038 3 роки тому +1

      I agree. I cannot spend a day without coming here to listen to this mass. I wish I could've heard it live sometime. I bet it is a totally different experience. The music is written for a very large amount of musicians (for music of that period ofc), and in a cathedral as big as Salzburg's, the sound probably disperses and you cannot have the clarity of sound that we have here in this recording. How was it for you, when you heard it live? Did you sit far in the back? Or close to the musicians?

    • @johnwidmer223
      @johnwidmer223 3 роки тому +5

      Such an extrem comment about Monteverdi! Remember he is the first baroque musician (Orfeo, 1607, Vespro Della Beata Vergine, 1610, is the bridge between 16 century and 17 century baroque music). Without Monteverdi you even couldn't hear Schütz, Schmelzer (Biber's master) and... Biber himself! The first German baroque composers learned their art direct in Italy or from italian influences.
      You have the right to dislike Monteverdi, question of taste, BUT consider him as a VANDAL... what a shock 😲

    • @shelterit
      @shelterit 3 роки тому +1

      Them fighting words! And vandal? What nonsense.
      Monteverdi is the only composer I keep coming back to, over and over again, for me his music is pure perfection. Selva morale was my first true love, and it's such a thrill to hear such a wonderful rendition of it. Biber is a bonus.
