- So , after the usual en-devour on facebook marketplace this little old school pickup came into play. Branding a price tag our wallet just couldnt let go of. So, after a little persuading, here it is! Our new to us mighty maxx! A part two is already in the works tearing into this old girl to see how we can improve her !
I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter! Enjoy this video, and lets get ready for the week ahead shall we ?
Happy Easter, if you want to ask my opinion about a Mitsubishi, my least favorite one is the eclipse.
You too jay. Thanks
You, too J! Happy Easter.
Hey jay, do you still work at the junkyard?
Same to you and yours bud
These are TOTALLY gone. Clean it up and bring it to the next RADWOOD show closest to you. It'll be a huge hit!
Im still waiting on an announcement date for the one here in town. It was cancelled last year due to the pandemic and Ive got two cars ready to attend as it is!
@@MXguy95 My first was 2018 in Philly, then 2019 in New Jersey. Both were an absolute blast!
I agree, I have one but I never see them
I have a 1991 White Mighty Max in working condition. They are awesome pickup trucks
Ain’t that just the cutest little motor you’ve ever seen? 😂
Facts
@Hermann Froh 😂
I bought a 95 mighty max with 12 miles on it brand new off the lot. This is NOT A GUY TRUCK! I used it every day In WA year round and LOVED it. I put over 200k miles on it never let me down. Hauled rock, dirt, and wood with ease. Was rear ended 3x and she kept on goin'.. sold it for $500 when we moved out of state. Cried when I let it go - it was my baby! By the way, I'm a gal...guys don't cry over little rigs like that
I wish someone still made little trucks like this. Instead of all the trucks you need a ladder to get into, & some /not all owners can't seem to drive or park . cute truck.
Toyota does not sell Hilux in the US?
@@johnperalta9415 noper
@@johnperalta9415 I think the smallest truck we have here that's worth a damn to buy is the Tacoma. They brought Rangers back which was nice but they're still big.
Isn't it sad? We need something like this again not those fancy ass trucks to go to the shopping mall
@@johnperalta9415 Toyota stopped selling the hilux here when the Tacoma came out
Damn, I remember these being everywhere back in the day..
When you rev it, it reminds me of Christine. “Park it over there. Park it over there! And shut it off, before we all choke to death!”
Stall 20.
"That's the last time you run that mechanical asshole in here without an exhaust hose. I catch you doing it again, I'll throw you out on your ass!!"
This is a diamond in the rough, can't wait to see what y'all do with it.
Wow. This is my first time seeing one. Definitely something worth hanging onto or to sell in a forum where guys desire these type of trucks. A rare treat indeed.
Dude you are the king of $300 cars. Globally. You’re the king of it.
These are badass little trucks! I’m planning to g63t swap 1993 in the near future
I had a 1990 mighty max when I was a teenager in like 2004 lol it was my first car I bought myself..it was a automatic and ran like a lawnmower but it got me everywhere I wanted to be. Looked just like this one..❤
most of those things I remember missed and backfired like a fat man eating beans all the time
Compression test. 🙂👍
Mitsubishi built great little trucks. These used to be all over the road back then.
I had a 1987 MM with auto, air. No p/s no other frills. Last year made with carburetor.
For a weekend warrior, this was a great truck to haul things from Home Depot used as a cheap third car.
Nice to see small trucks returning. I kept it for 10 years. Traded it for a 92 Nissan truck. Why? Needed something with power steering.
WE'RE HAPPY TO HAVE YOU WITH US!
I love how you said it started to fast.
Compression test, leak test with oil to see if compression changes after oil enters combustion chamber, pull the valve covers maybe a stuck lifter , check if push rods loose
That body and paint is amazing !! Wow
It has held up extremely well for the age !
I have one too 91 almost no wear at all looks 10 years old
Since it is in such nice shape, body-wise, I would be inclined to do the head and throw a timing belt at it at the same time. Odds are, using it as a daily driver instead of the red Dodge, fuel savings would offset a lot of the repair expense and give you an inexpensive truck for garbage runs, etc.
This is one of those cars that i'd love to see an update video on once you throw that tune-up kit on her. Hope to hell it ain't a burnt valve, but being a Mighty Max, you might just be right
I've always wanted the Ram50 version to try and stuff in a 440! 😂 Body looks nice! Great score!
I would love to find me a little d50 4x4 to knock around in ! But they just dont seem to exist anymore
@@MXguy95 thats true 😕 I've seen two in the last couple years. People want big bucks for them it seems like
Those are good little trucks that always cost less than a Toyota. The frames are strong. A smallblock fits. The Dodge version uses Chrysler A-904 automatics.
Love these old trucks
Hell, I'd love to have it. Park it in the garage, clean it up, rebuild the engine. Throw new valves and gaskets in it. Like new!
Sweet, $400 not bad👍
We had one growing up. Sold with 325000 miles. I now have a montero sport with 220k miles. Not a big foreign car guy, but don’t sleep on older Mitsubishi reliability
Good morning jay how are you an your dad doing good to see you buddy
That's a good looking truck! Deserves to live! I hope is a simple fix.
You and me both!
Great find, looks great from the outside
I got a 4WD version of this off a friend's property. Bought the place, owner left it. Had a bad head gasket, re-did the whole upper end, new starter, alternator, boil the radiator...traded it to a buddy. It was clean, he still has it a decade later
I’ve got an 1985 4wd. Was in a barn 8 years and mint. Love them as so basic
Buying a 1986 barn find with 49k original miles for $950 tomorrow! Can't wait.
Dude that thing would be quite the find up here in PA, I love old mini trucks and I know I’d buy it just to have another project!
THANK YOU, JAY SMART!
A friend of mine has a '89 Dodge Ram 50, which is exactly like this one, except it's tan and it's carbureted, and it did come with a Sears and Roebuck radio, which he let me have. This is the greatest mini truck I have driven.
Great little trucks, would love to have one!
That is a rare but good find Jay - very good find. RAM 50 in essence is another view of it and I recall my father having one of these in 4X4 long box - loved the truck! What killed it was rust and two younger sisters. Will be interesting to see how this comes out after all mechanicals are taken care of and it is cleaned up! Good catch! :-)
My dream 2door pickup
I wish they still make small, affordable trucks like that. I don't need a "Tank on Wheels" that start at $60k. Just something to go to Lowe's and pick up some 2x4's or a couple of sheets of plywood from time to time.
WELCOME ABOARD, JAY SMART!
Basket case Nissan, my buddy’s ranger is like that. I keep finding shit from our highschool days lol.
I keep wanting one of those earlier D50 with the body color wheels and the wild stripes. The stripes seemed to fade and crack after about two years.
Happy Easter hope you enjoy it
Haven't seen one of these in a long time. Same with the Mazdas.
ahh the little b2300s and such! Good little trucks too!
And D21's and luv's etc...
These are very good little trucks
YOU'RE WELCOME!
Im pretty impressed how clean the body is, usually I see these mitsu's all faded and rusted out. If I got my hands on one I'd probably throw a 4G63 or maybe like a 1.9L TDI in it
This thing is rust free and straight as a pin! It would be super cool to find a small diesel for it. But with the miles and all things considered, I think we can salvage this engine and move forward !
@@MXguy95 best of luck! 😁
Omg I owned one in 1990. Accept my was a dodge version of it. Great find my was Dodge Ram 50 lol fun truck to drive but never could get out of its own way lol
Id love to find a nice 4x4 d50 pickup! But they're non left to be found apparently
@@MXguy95 yes that’s rare to find the 4wheel drive
Always loved these little trucks, the dodge ram 50, mighty max, b2200
I realize I'm late to the party but anyway - had one of these a while back. If it matters, if you want to reset that 'maint required' light on the dash IIRC the switch to turn it off is behind the blank plastic plug to the right of the steering wheel. Pop that cover off and have a look behind for a small switch.......
Very nice, here we got this one and the crew cab, you can rarely see one anymore
A CREW CAB? How freaking cool is that !
Damn clean. Lots of potential
I just got me a 1991 Mighty Max last weekend, it doesn’t have ac and needed some new battery wires, replaced the wires and runs just fine for its year lol. Going to see how it goes with it.
I bought the cheapest Mitsubishi Mighty
"Maxx" YOU BETCHA!
I miss little trucks. I had a ranger and s10 and both were dead reliable. Easy on gas and for hauling stuff the typical house has they are perfect.
Would be great commuter truck. I have 98 regular cab 2wd Tacoma here in Canada I drive in the summer to work and around the city and everyone seems to love these little 2wd trucks. Hope it’s an easy fix with the tune up. Best of luck! Love your content by the way.
It can't be too bad. It has mighty in the name.
Pull the head...switch out the valve...tidy solid truck...a keeper.
I love it! I'm looking for one!
That truck is in decent condition considering its age. It needs cleaning and a good power washing. The only Achilles tendon is that motor with the suspected burned valve. Not worth the trouble if you are intent on selling the truck afterwards, but if you are going to keep it and drive it, it may be worth it to find a used or reman cylinder head and try to get some more years out of it. She'd make a great knock around town truck to run errands with.
Radio delete is stilk intact 🤣 Suprised no one ever went to Pep Boys for a $30 Kraco and a pair of speakers...
Yeah looks like the only option this has is A/C, and maybe the sliding rear window.
Awesome truck!! Love this stuff : )
Thanks buddy! Theres already a second part for this in the works! stay tuned !
Yes sir yes sir : )
i've got two of these trucks, one a '94 mitsubishi, and the other is an '89 dodge ram d50. the mitsubishi is in good shape and runs great, but has a buggered flywheel ring gear. they wanted $350 for a new one, there ain't none of them in any junkyard close to me and i only paid $700 for the whole truck at an auction. so i bought the dodge off of craigslist as a nonrunner with no title for $300. when i went to pull the engine i found it has the same problem. 'bought makes you wanna cry. i'm in northern indiana, so that's prolly a bit of a trip for a couple of old mini trucks, but $850 will carry the both of them home though if you're interested.
Dang thats quite a haul back down here. But I would love to have them, either one of them 4x4? and do they still start up if you bump start em?
@@MXguy95 the mitsubishi will, i was driving it. sometimes the starter will catch, and sometimes it won't. i got tired of playing will it, won't it and parked it till i could fix it. i never tried the dodge, but it is complete, and the engine isn't stuck. neither are 4x4. the mitsubishi was repainted a metal flake charcoal grey color just before i got it, and has a new grill. i had someone offer me $1500 for it while sitting at a stop light, and turned them down. right now i'm just looking to eliminate some projects to fund others.
In good nick
I have a 98 GLX Lancer poor man's spec with wind up windows, with only 90 thousand miles and never had any reliability issues
I had the cousins 1990 ram 50 long bed great truck
These are great little trucks. Small trucks are hard to come by. You've done more with less..........
That's not a bad little truck. If I could drive legally I wouldn't mind cruising around in one.
Jay I wonder what my truck would bring in? 1990 ford f350 crew cab dually 7.3 idi with a aftermarket ATS turbo setup, new dually fenders, just had the transmission rebuilt E4od automatic cost $3k with triple clutch torque converter, good tires all around, engine runs great, no rust at all nothing roughly it's got little over 200k miles and lots of new parts and aftermarket custom bumpers cost $1000, steering components $500, windshield $250, new radio/speakers, fuel system has been fixed from leaks and have a electric fuel pump for fast starts and new glow plugs/system, new fuel injectors, probably some other things i've forgotten plan on upgrading the belt system with a serpentine setup like the later 7.3's had all pulleys and brackets and upgrading the 1G alternator to a 3G so i got 130 amps of power, new aluminum radiator, thinking this truck might be worth $10k or so maybe more not sure I did buy this truck for $2500 and drove it home.
Mayan calendar lol. Cousin had one and loved it.
Thats it! haha!
Shes a solid runner Jay! Fix her up and give her a home!
Thats the plan! Hopefuly it will all work out!
Awesome little truck hopefully all it needs is a tune up 👍
My stepmother owned a truck like this. It was white and an automatic
The body style before this one even offered a turbo diesel. I had one great truck.
thats what everyone keeps telling me !
She’s a beaut
Just bought an 83 AMC Concord on FB marketplace. FB Marketplace is a goldmine of radwood hoopties.
Sadly everything is overpriced. And continuing to go up as the used car market is ridiculous right now.
@@MXguy95 Paid 1100 for it. But your right. A lot of similar cars were 3 times more. I think I just got lucky.
She’s saveable
So whoever owned this truck last ... literally ... shit the bed! Cool little truck; still has a lot of potential! These things useta be everywhere but you don’t see them anymore. Even a burnt valve is salvageable!
Neighbor of ours years ago had a black one. Truck smoked so bad I could smell it leaving from three houses away and see it too! But he drove it for years that way and finally traded it in on a newer dakota. Glad to see it go, but now I dont see them at all!
The buzzer sound like the chime from Toyota
It looks clean fun truck to drive
"Well time stopped for this Mighty Max" 😂
I’m getting my first mighty max Saturday gonna tow it with a ranger danger on a 2 hour trip lol
I like this truck. Think it is worth fixing. If you want 4x4 thats good on gas, try to find Ford Ranger with 2.3 and 5 speed. I get 23 mpg in mostly non highway driving.
These are cool trucks I had a 1990 long bed loved it also had a 1980 ford courier
Love these trucks. Hoping for a part two video
aye i have a 91 with almost 150k on it and runs great & im looking to get a wrecked evo x and take the suspension drivetrain engine etc off of it to put it under mine eventually
wow that would be an impressive little truck! If it something you go through with you should document the build!
@@MXguy95 i will if i ever find a donor car for it! I want to possibly try and get it into SEMA one day cause it will no doubt be a 1 of 1 build i bet
A sheet of paper at the exhaust pipe will show a burnt valve. The paper will get sucked against the opening on that stroke.
Nice find, if I'm honest it sounded like it's actually running on two when you give it some gas so I'm kinda tentatively hopeful for the tuneup fixing things... Do these use a coil pack or a distributor? Would be cool if it was an easy fix, though hard to tell for sure this end without being able to hear it crank without firing. Good luck with it anyway, will be interested to watch if you decide to film the tuneup process.
This truck is the truck Steve cash had in talking kitty cat 😂
Thanks
My first car I had on the road was a 1985 Dodge Colt. Which was made by Mitsubishi. Good car. Wish I could find one but I think they all got used up.
Nice truck you can't get them in that nice of shape here in Elmira NY it looks like it came from Nashville TN
I would start with a compression and leak down test before I did anything. Take it apart, would be fun to fix. It's a tinker toy.
I like all the videos that you upload,
I really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment! Ive seen you around for a few years now !
@@MXguy95 I remember when you worked at the one yard that had them cool older vehicles right inside the gate
I’m thinking about finding one for myself. Prices right now are shockingly high tho. For everything.
Me and a friend of mine bought one of these once, that was an experience when the back tires busted on the dolly and nobody was open because we were messing around during lockdown.
What did you end up doing? Just kept on trucking or ?
@@MXguy95 It may or may not have keep on trucking. You know when a tire blows off the rim in it's entirety though (yup they were that old), it'll roll just fine. Worth mentioning an average mighty max steel rim is good for 20 miles of flat rolling.
any idea what sort of muffler was on this truck? if it had one at all? sounds really good for a little 4 banger
That is a rare little truck you got there.
Seems to be a truck from yesteryear. Hopefully it will make a nice transformation!
I just sold a factory shop manual for an 87 on eBay after like four years. Came from a dealer where I bought like 10 years of obsolete Chrysler manuals and there was a handful of older than that.
They were also sold badged as a Dodge D50 or something like that. (edit, if I had waited you said the same dang thing)
I did see one here in my you pull yard in the vehicles to go out section last month, smashed cab top. Not sure what year. If you need anything I can go have a look, maybe make a walkaround video of it. I ship stuff all the time so that's no big deal.
That would be neat! I cant think of anything right off hand I need. Its a very complete little truck. And its a no thrills model. Didnt even come with a radio hah!
If it was up here the radio would be about all that was left. lol. They rust pretty bad.
I totally forgot about you working at the junk yard until you mentioned it. I imagine you don’t work there at all anymore? What made you leave?
