I've been using this exact setup for about 15 years, I usually get 4 - 5 years out of the ABS, works great. To make the split, I run the ABS thru my table saw with the blade up about 1/2 inch. Thanks for your video.
What a great idea! I’ve been living in snow for over 50 years and I’ve never seen that on a blade before. It seems like it works well and does one heck of a job. Nice work!
A friend introduced me to this hack about 8 or 9 years ago now after I complained about breaking another plow shoe. Works so well, and very durable, I’m still using the second one I installed. 2 tips, best way to cut the abs is on a table saw, bring the pipe indoors before you pound it on the blade. The first one I applied was sitting in the garage @ -30 C and it cracked.
yep i used a 1.5" steel pipe on my KFI blade....the plastic stuff woked ok but it kept breaking in the cold when hitting frozen rocks...not the steel...works great and dont break
@ Yep, I can see why those that don’t plow much or don’t have welders etc going the plastic route, but I have all that stuff. I remove the blade in the off season, so if it wears much on the bottom, I can just run a few beads of weld across it when needed. 👍👍🇺🇸
Man says, "People always have something to say, they think they know everything." 🤣👏Truer words have never been spoken👍. I like it and am going to try it on my Glacier plow. Thank you sir for posting this video!
Great job with this ABS pipe! I use a front driven 63" snowblower on the Kubota B2650 and until ground freezes it digs in and makes a mess. Skid pads are too small to make it float on gravel road; it is well worth a try because the first season month brings a few raining/snow cycles until after Christmas’s and prevents complete surface freeze. It takes away the fun out of doing the snow removal. Thanks for this great idea, I will try to implement this clever solution. Have a nice day, Richard in North-Eastern Canada.
@@sevendyseven4090 I already use 2x steel skid pads that are 2"x 6" on each side; for simplicity, if the ABS pipe does not work as expected I thought of using longer pads by welding a plate under those existing skid pads (home made steel skis). For now, we just had 3 days of rain in eastern Canada… this is not what winter should be…. :)
Fresh snow over gravel and pushed onto the grass ,, and zero gouging ,,no clumps of sod or gravel ,, went thru a few plastic pipes before a steet pipe,,,, made it a bit longer and put a 45 angle on each end to keep the end from gouging ,works great...
Ive been making this type of pipe for years for friends, using 2 inch steel pipe, I use a plasma cutter to cut about an inch wide slot, slide the pipe on and then weld 3 tabs , one on each end about 6 inches in and one in the middle, welded to the pipe, then drill 3 holes through the tabs and blade of the plow and bolt it on, so it wont move and they all work great for plowing over dirt or gravel....on heavier blades than what the poster has, abs wont last long...
Looks like a good idea. You plow faster than me. I might slip on some ABS pipe when I am doing my gravel driveway and keep my shoes lower when I do the asphalt portion.
I am forever thankful to come across your post. I used 2 1/2” ABS and it slid across the ground like there was no rocks or stones in my driveway. I split the pipe using g my table saw, spread it so it was over the bolt heads and used my plastic mallet to get it on. Again thanks and have a great year.
@@waynestewart9380 That's great! It's amazing, ing isn't it. I made a trail for my dog around my property. She walks around on the trail and does her business. Now I have to clean up the trail. Lol
What you did here was a GREAT Choice Thank you and I will test it out too I use a hydraulic reversible plowshare, it is also fantastic to have when we have shorter roads and have to turn the share often Best regards from southern Norway and here we get a lot of snow
Nice camera work. I love the hack. My driveway is paved and I don’t require the pipe. The little bit of gravel I do have I just lift the blade a little bit. Though for your long stretch of gravel that pipe is the answer. I also have a 60 inch click and go 2. Though my quad is a 2021 Grizzly 700 SE (XLT in America). I have a nice fairing on it like you also. This is my 2nd year with the plow and I’m still amazed at the amount of snow a quad will push.
Seen you do this on your sxs a few years ago , i installed it on my sxs as my cement driveway is cracked and gets cut with the shoes even but with this it works like a charm i have been using this ever since, thanks for the tip.
ABS is great stuff for impact resistance. The best canoes for running rapids are made of ABS. Not only when striking rocks but it also is slippery on rocks and slides right off of them.
I think you got a winning idea. Patent it that’s how million dollar ideas start. Hardworking smart people making it easier for workers like me. Thx for sharing
What a fabulous idea! I have cut the ABS pipe lengthwise for other ideas but never considered the blade's edge. It does a better job than our local community plowing the street, which only waits until warm days to plow to create massive puddles.
I use a 2” galvanized steel pipe. Doesn’t shatter when you hit obstructions or rocks frozen into the road. I also pin it on one end with a bolt so it doesn’t slip off.
lol, I literally just got done putting the plow, weights and chains on my JD lawnmower . I notice one of the shoes was bent and had seen this trick. Split a piece of pvc and just got done beating it on there. My driveway is all gravel. We"ll see how it works as we have snow moving in this weekend. Excellent idea.
I like that it allows for a slight base on the ground which when freezes allows for the regular shoes to be used. I might try what you did and use it all plow season long.
I have used schedule 80 electrical conduit on my Razor trail for years and no cracks ! I agree use the cutting edge if you have asphalt or concrete and the pipe for gravel or lawn etc! Great video try it. Best when the stone has a chance to freeze good as well before plowing for the season
I have used schedule 80 electrical conduit on my Razor trail for years and no cracks ! I agree use the cutting edge if you have asphalt or concrete and the pipe for gravel or lawn etc! Great video try it
On my snowplow truck I use a piece of schedule 80 2" steel pipe. Sliced so it fits like your ABS pipe.... plus i use 2 bolts through the bottom cutting edge and pipe to hold it in place. I only remove it when it gets wore out to replace it. I use it on paved and gravel (along with what you said about across grass.) It's been standard procedure for close to 20 years for me.
Had my ABS pipe on the blade for 5 years now, it’s starting to relax its fit and has a tendency to slide off the blade a bit when it’s angled. Time for a new one.
I hard surface welded those round skid shoes / runners on my dad’s atv blade, still lasting great! Arctec 661T 1/4” smaw rod! But if that pvc works it’s a great idea!
Great ideal One thing I would add to that so that snow's not blowing up on you off the top of your blade is to take a semi mud flap you see on the side of the road, cut a strip of that hard plastic or rubber and bolt it on the top of your plow blade and that will keep that spray from blowing up on you
2 things, i plowed at a state park and when the new plow showed up it had a rubber cutting-edge. It worked ok but didnt last long. Wore out quick. Went back to steel. OBTW somtimes smelt like burnt rubber. Im going to give the abs trick a chance.got the pipe already. Ive got a paved driveway but gravel parking area that was just covered with a layer of new stone. Hasnt packed down yet.Thanks.
Great idea for gravel. 👍 We have 1/4 mile driveway steep with turns but it’s black top then gravel in backyard , I hate our big gravel in snow and the snow blower on the tractor hates it too! 😂 We are done with shoes but for wear we would weld big fat washers on the ends every couple years but now went to UMHW strips that we buy pre cut about 4” high x 1/2” thick and then cut the length of the plow then mark and drill for the bolt holes on the lower blade. So the reason for 4” wide is we can flip it once it wears close to the blade on the bottom side. After a run the square edge will angle and plow close like a steel blade. It’s still not ideal for gravel like a round pipe would be so I’ll try that and link to your video if it works on our big gravel. 👍 UHMW saves our old metal blades since we end up plowing 3 miles ( 6 passes each snow )on hard black top. Thanks for the Idea , I might not mind the gravel anymore! 😂😂😂
Seems to work excellent in those conditions. Just the right size to push a little snow and all rocks down into the ground while letting a majority of the snow come up and over the pipe. Wondering though in heavy wet snow if it would just ride up and over the snow. Excellent idea and it seems to work very well
Great idea! Friend suggestion, I think it will last longer if you buffer the hammer with a block of wood to keep force evenly distributed around rim of pipe…
Awesome! Michigan? I’m getting a plow next week for my wheeler. I’m in northern Minnesota and granted we don’t have as much snow as you but I fear it’s coming
That was pretty slick! I will have to use it, thank you. If you hang a piece of almost anything, a lot of people use rubber about 6 to 8 inches wide across the front top of your blade it will help with the blow back. Stay well.
I have all grass and gravel. Skid shoes dig ruts everywhere.. 30 years ago I welded a 2" pipe on the bottom of tractor blade and no more ruts. Still using the same pipe.
My gravel driveway is also 1/4 mile long, and have been doing this for a couple of years now. ONLY works if the ground/gravel is frozen underneath the snow, otherwise you will pick up a lot of gravel, unless you lift the plow 1-2 inches above the driveway. Also if it is really cold, sometimes the plastic pipe will break.
@FANATICALSIDERIDER I had to open my big mouth. 🙄 We just had our first snow storm and it looks like we got 8 to 9 inches. It's already gone down in the history book as Snowmeggdon 25.
Neat! My problem is that a lot of the time, the ground is warm enough that the shoes just dig into the gravel and the plow winds up scraping up a lot of gravel. This looks like it might be a possible solution. I'll have to give it a try.
Just move the cutting edge a tad higher up, put on 3/4" PCV in the exact same way as vid..put a bead of silicon on each side to keep it in place, let dry for 2-3 days..
If you have a wire feed welder you can make your skids like new again with a bit of welding on them . You are right about the plastic pipe, it does work well.
If you have a stick welder get some hard facing rods and lay down some beads on the bottom or your skid shoes before they’re totally worn out and they will last forever. Wears much longer than the mild steel these skid shoes are made of.
Right on. I'd rather use this method rather than use the plow with no shoes and plowing up gravel with the snow, or not plowing at all and getting a big built up base of compacted snow.
I plow with a Suzuki Carry Kei truck and a 72" SXS plow on it. I've been thinking about putting a piece of metal pipe on it with a couple of tac welds. These little trucks are nice for the heat, locking diff and axles all while being cheaper than a SXS. Oh... It has a dump bed too. Handiest wheel barrow ever! 🤣
OK, I'm sold, but it will have to wait till next year,.... I typically don't grade my drive before winter knowing that plowing destroys it... So I "fix it" when the snow melts... Might still work sort of.
For ten years now I have been using a 4" slice of rubber horse mat bought at TSC for this purpose. ( to not dig in and plow gravel ) Tried the pipe initially but extreme cold weather and an unexpected rock would crack the pipe as it was just too brittle. The center section of the plows 4" tall rubber slice will last for years. The outer edges of the plows rubber slice will crack quicker and need replacement. So on both the right and left side of the plow I have one foot sections of this rubber slice that can be easily replaced. This rubber method works as the rubber will fold backward, lift and not dig into the gravel.

Saw where another YTuber did the same thing on a bigger plow and worked well. Of course, I don't have snow issues in Ga....Jan. 2018 last time.
You need a 5' bleade, my man! Get a Moose plow. Interesting idea with the tube...
If you have a wire feed welder you can make your skids like new again with a bit of welding on them . You are right about the plastic pipe, it does work well.
Ya that’s a good idea.
I welded a piece of flat stock to my cutting edge. If I didn't have a welder this pipe idea looks pretty good. I don't like shoes
If you have a stick welder get some hard facing rods and lay down some beads on the bottom or your skid shoes before they’re totally worn out and they will last forever. Wears much longer than the mild steel these skid shoes are made of.
Nice Work…. Nice views lol
This will be helpful for so many people
thanks I know it's crazy how this video took off
@ that’s awesome congrats
now i too need an ATV with blade to do my 3 car length drive way
Right on. I'd rather use this method rather than use the plow with no shoes and plowing up gravel with the snow, or not plowing at all and getting a big built up base of compacted snow.
Slick IDEA !! I'm going to try this on my John Deere instead of locking the snowthrower up a couple inches or dragging my shoes.

Thanks!
Great idea. How much did you have to cut out of the pipe?
Only the width of my saw blade. Watch for a video tomorrow on how to cut the pipe and install it on the blade
I used metal pipe and have 2 small tabs with a quick pin to take on and off works well

How do you attach? Pics?
@@mlcoper1 The bottom of my plow has a bolted on replaceable wear edge. I just drill holes in the rubber and sandwhich the rubber with longer bolts.
