I'd be quite happy for Ethan to take the torch from Kelly. At the end of the day it's not about nationality, rather what's being brought to the sport and Ethan is the modern embodiment of the style, grace and innovation that Kelly continued after Curren.
Curren, Slater, Ewing - yeah, I'm happy with that.
Ethan Ewing is by far the smoothest surfer on the tour, with power too. If there are Slater fan boys thinking Slater was better, you are just kidding yourselves, he is near it anymore, unfortunately he has been a champ but I think he was done a few years back. Big pipe is his only chance to win.

@@joeblow1942 Slater took a couple of ok tubes, nothing spectacular. Ethan was ripping so hard and smooth. Slater is surfing like a 40 year old, which is amazing considering he is 51, but his turns are no where near World class and his history and fan boys are the only reason he is hanging around.

Kelly got through those barrels like only the GOAT can, but in the end, Ethan's turn game was simply more impressive. Judging is subjective..

Ethan is great. So refreshing to watch surf. Kelly didn’t get much opportunity so never got more than a couple tubes. Funny some of the comments about how he can’t surf anymore. 😀 Trying experimental equipment and surfing a tricky wave he doesn’t seem to like.
If you have ever surfed sunset beach and have pulled into a tube there, you know how hard it is to come out! That's why most guys go around them at Sunset! I think Ewing is great but Slater got under scored for the tubes out there!

It will be interesting to hear what Slaters take on the heat was. Barrels at Sunset are high risk cause they usually clamp sooner than later and you’d think they would score well for that reason alone. Ethan’s waves were sizable and he made good on them with some critical high risk power carves. Honestly, they both surfed really well. One chose barrels and the other chose power hacks. The judges chose the later.

Ethan deserved that. He was shredding. Slater was looking a bit off. Too busy looking for a barrel when he could've shredded.
I dunno why everyone is getting so defensive on the score saying Kelly got ripped off. Slater will always be the best, he just wasnt this sesh. Haha. Its ok.
